Game Preview: Mets @ Phillies, Game 1

Happy Mother’s Day! The Mets will actually play baseball today! (Two games to be precise!)

The rain that has been impacting the majority of the northeast season Friday is finally out of the area and there’s a lot of baseball to make up. There are three doubleheaders in baseball today, and that comes on the heals of two doubleheaders yesterday. Rotations are scrambled, so we are taking early in the morning shot in the dark about the pitching matchup for each game today.

The Mets and Phillies have also now had multiple days to marinate on Thursday’s epic Mets come back. The New York Mets were down early in the game, trailing 0-4 after the first inning. Entering the 9th inning the Mets were trailing 1-7. But these are your 2022 Mets and in the ninth inning the Mets recorded hit after hit after hit and all of sudden the Mets were leading 8-7. Díaz then shut the door and the Mets took the first game of the series. Since the major loss, Bryce Harper held a players only meeting with the Phillies. The Phillies are probably more anxious than usual to get a win in the first game of the doubleheader.

Max Scherzer looks to keep the good times rolling for the Mets. Over five starts and 31 innings of work he has a 2.61 ERA, 3.03 FIP, 0.806 WHIP and a 145 ERA+. This will already be his third start against the Phillies this season. He’s coming off of a start where he allowed four runs over six innings against the Phillies at Citi Field. In that start, a game the Mets eventually won 10-6, Max was hurt by the long ball as the Phillies took him deep three times. For context, Max has allowed a total of four homers this season. His second start of the season was also against the Phillies, in Philly, and he allowed only one run over five innings while striking out 7. The Phillies have the following numbers against Max:

  • Odubel Herrera 16-56, 4 2B, 3B, 2 HR, 6 BB, 11 K
  • J.T. Realmuto 6-55, 2B, 2 HR, 4 BB, 17 K
  • Jean Segura 10-30, HR, BB, 8 K
  • Rhys Hoskins 1-26, 2B, BB, 14 K
  • Bryce Harper 4-17, 2 2B, 2 HR, 5 BB, 9 K
  • Nick Castellanos 2-14, 2 2B, BB, 6 K
  • Alec Bohm 3-12, 5 K
  • Kyle Schwarber 3-8, 2 HR, 4 BB, 3 K
  • Didi Gregorius 1-10, 3 K

The Mets bats will get another look at Kyle Gibson who has pitched 27 2/3 innings over five starts this year with a 2.93 ERA, 3.93 FIP, 1.084 WHIP and a 134 ERA+. His last start out was against the Mets where he allowed one unearned run over 4 1/3 innings of work. The Mets worked the counts that night and got five walks but obviously couldn’t do too much with them. The Mets have the following career numbers against Gibson:

  • Francisco Lindor 15-45, 2B, 6 BB, 7 K
  • James McCann 6-27, BB, 7 K
  • Mark Canha 2-16, BB, 3 K
  • Pete Alonso 0-9, 3 BB, 4 K
  • Brandon Nimmo 2-10, 2B, HR, 2 BB, K
  • Jeff McNeil 3-10, 2B, HR, K
  • J.D. Davis 1-5, 3 BB, 2 K
  • Eduardo Escobar 2-5, 3 BB, K
  • Dominic Smith 2-7, 2B
  • Starling Marte 1-5
  • Tomás Nido 1-5, 2B, BB, 2 K

Game Preview: Mets @ Phillies

Weather is going to be the story of the weekend. There were six postponed games across the league yesterday. The weather for the northeast doesn’t look that much better today. The Mets and Phillies right now are scheduled to play a late afternoon game but the forecast still looks quite wet. Yesterday’s postponement was scheduled as a doubleheader in August so if needed today’s game could be cancelled and played as a doubleheader tomorrow.

This gives us more time then to think about the epic comeback victory the Mets had on Thursday night! Wild ride of emotions and almost definitely will impact both teams in tonight’s matchup.

The Phillies will somehow take the field again tonight after that improbable comeback yesterday by the New York Mets!

The New York Mets were down early in the game, trailing 0-4 after the first inning. Entering the 9th inning the Mets were trailing 1-7. Game Preview: Braves vs Mets

The New York Mets swept the double header with the Braves yesterday, improving their record to 18-8 for the season and setting up a chance to take their 8th consecutive series of the season this afternoon. The Mets and Braves will also be waiting out the weather today. The chances for rain decreases throughout the late morning and early afternoon. For what its worth, the Braves have an off day tomorrow and the Mets have to travel to Philadelphia. So the Mets could potentially push the start of today’s game back a few hours if they want to.

Tylor Megill is on the bump for the Mets this afternoon. Over his first five games this season he has pitched 28 innings with a 1.93 ERA, 2.72 FIP, 0.857 WHIP and a 193 ERA+. Over his last two starts he’s allowed only two runs from five hits over 11 2/3 innings. This includes his last start where he no-hit the Phillies for five innings. Megill was successful against the Braves last year holding them to only six runs in 19 2/3 innings over four starts (2.75 ERA). The Braves have the following career numbers against Megill:

The Mets bats will get a look at Ian Anderson this afternoon. Over his first four games and 19 1/3 innings, Anderson has a 4.66 ERA, 5.04 FIP, 1.293 WHIP and an 89 ERA+. Anderson’s stats are still skewed heavily from his first start of the season (five runs in 2 2/3 innings). Since that start he has allowed six runs, 5 earned, over 16 2/3 innings (2.70 ERA, 4.58 FIP). Over three games against the Mets last season he tossed 16 1/3 innings allowing six runs (3.31 ERA) from 13 hits and four walks. The Mets have the following career numbers against him:

Game Preview: Braves vs Mets Game 2

The Mets are currently in the middle of playing 11 games in 10 days, thanks to the second game of a double header that is about to happen. This evening the Mets are playing one of the games missed due to the lockout to start the season. The Mets played an extraordinary number of unscheduled games last year (either double headers or games due to weather postponements). At least this year everyone is impacted by missing the first two series of the year.

Carlos Carrasco will take the mound for the Mets, looking to bounce back from his last start. Over four games and 22 innings this year he has a 4.09 ERA, 2.99 FIP, 0.955 WHIP and a 92 ERA+. In his first three starts he had allowed only three runs over 18 1/3 innings. Last time out he allowed eight runs over 3 2/3 innings. Carrasco made only one start against the Braves last year allowing five runs from seven hits and two walks in five innings of work. The Braves have the following numbers against him:

  • Eddie Rosario 12-34, 2 2B, 2 HR, 5 BB, 9 K
  • Orlando Arcia 1-7, 2B, 2 BB
  • Guillermo Heredia 1-7
  • Travis d’Arnaud 1-5, 2 K
  • Adam Duvall 1-5, 2B, K
  • Matt Olson 3-4, 2 HR, BB
  • Dansby Swanson 0-3, 2 K
  • Williams Contreras 1-2, HR

Kyle Wright will start the night cap for the Braves. Over his first four starts and 24 innings pitched he has a 1.13 ERA (league leading), 1.37 FIP, 0.833 WHIP and a 367 ERA+ (league leading). His success this season has come from controlling the home run ball – he hasn’t allowed a single homer this season! For comparison, his career 1.4 HR/9 rate. Kyle made two starts last season, one in April and one in June, and was sent back down to the minors after both of them. Against the Mets last June he allowed five runs from four hits over two innings. The Mets have the following numbers against him:

  • Jeff McNeil 5-9, 2 2B
  • Dominic Smith 3-7, HR, BB
  • Brandon Nimmo 2-6, HR, BB, K
  • Pete Alonso 0-5, BB, 2 K
  • J.D. Davis 0-4, BB, 3 K
  • Starling Marte 0-3, K
  • Francisco Lindor 1-1, HR, BB

Game Preview: Braves vs Mets Game 1

The Mets attempt to bounce back from last night’s close loss as they play two games against the Braves this afternoon and evening in Queens!

Last night the Mets couldn’t find the big hit with runners in scoring position, faced some missed calls from umpires on their way to a loss. Trevor May, who allowed a big inning to break things open for Atlanta, announced after the game that he didn’t feel right and was going for an MRI. Former Mets catcher Travis d’Arnaud got the big hit and former Mets pitcher Colling McHugh shut things down against the Mets – just adding to the story from last night.

In addition to all of that, the Mets found out less than our before game time that Showalter was suspended due to Yoan Lopez throwing at (but not hitting) Kyle Schwarber. The Mets are now 0-2 this season without Showalter.

David Peterson will start things off this afternoon. Over three games and two starts this year Peterson has tossed 14 innings with a 0.64 ERA, 2.72 FIP, 1.000 WHIP and a 595 ERA+. Peterson is coming off of a strong start against the Diamondbacks where he pitched into the 6th inning. So far this season he has tossed 58, 80 and then 65 pitches. Last year against the Braves he allowed nine runs from 13 hits and two walks over 7 2/3 innings. The Braves have the following career numbers against Peterson:

  • Ronald Acuna Jr. 1-7, HR, 4 BB, 2 K
  • Dansby Swanson 2-9, 4 K
  • Marcell Ozuna 0-7, BB, 3 K
  • Austin Riley 4-8, 3 2B, 3 K
  • Ozzie Albies 2-7
  • Travis d’Arnaud 0-5, BB, 3 K
  • Adam Duvall 4-5, 2 2B, HR, K

The Mets bats will get their first look this year at Charlie Morton. In four starts and 18 innings this season he has a 7.00 ERA, 5.75 FIP, 1.778 WHIP and a 59 ERA+. He is coming off of a start against the Cubs where he allowed three runs from four hits and four walks over two and a third innings. Morton faced the Mets five times last season, totaling 26 2/3 innings, with a 2.36 ERA and 0.713 WHIP. He struck out 34 Mets batters during that stretch. The Mets have the following numbers against Morton:

  • Francisco Lindor 2-24, 2 2B, 8 K
  • Dominic Smith 3-12, HR, 4 K
  • Starling Marte 2-12, 2 BB, 4 K
  • Eduardo Escobar 1-9, BB, 3 K
  • Jeff McNeil 2-7, HR, 3 K
  • James McCann 1-8, HR, 5 K
  • Pete Alonso 2-7, 2B
  • Brandon Nimmo 0-6, BB, 2 K
  • Mark Canha 1-4, K

Game Preview: Braves vs Mets

The Mets, winners of a franchise record seven consecutive series to start a season, welcome the Braves to Citi Field tonight. The World Series champs will play four games against the Mets in three games with tomorrow featuring a double header.

This is also the second of four consecutive series the Mets have against NL East opponents (Phillies, Braves, Phillies, Nationals), including 11 games in 10 days. These types of stretches in May can set the tone for the rest of the first half of the season. So far the Mets have thrown a combined no-hitter in and rebounded with a series win after a tough single game loss.

This article is being published before rosters shrink to 26 players. Sean Reid-Foley‘s injury a couple of days ago becomes one roster spot gone the other spot is a bit more difficult for the Mets. Is it going to be Robinson Canó who has played poorly but is owed a lot of money? Is it going to be Dominic Smith who played incredibly well last night, has upside, but also has a minor league option. I’m hoping that Smith stays and Robinson is cut, we’ll find out this afternoon.

Chris Bassitt will open up the series tonight for the Mets. In his first four starts and 24 innings he has a 2.25 ERA, 3.13 FIP, 0.917 WHIP and a 167 ERA+. He had a rough start on April 20th where he allowed five runs out of the six runs he’s allowed all season. He bounced back in his last start holding the Cardinals to two hits and nothing else over six innings. Due to the age of Atlanta’s roster and how the league schedule has been for the last couple of seasons, very few players on the Braves have seen Bassitt in a major league game:

The Mets bats draw Max Fried to start the series. In four starts and 24 innings he has a 3.00 ERA, 2.25 FIP, 0.917 FIP and 138 ERA+. He is currently leading the league in BB/9 at 0.4 (career mark is a 2.7) which means he’s also leading the league in K/BB at an insane 21.00 (career mark is 3.34). In his last two starts he has allowed only one run over 13 innings from 6 hits and no walks while striking out 12.

Fried faced the Mets three times last year pitching a total of 18 innings with a 2.50 ERA. He allowed five runs from 13 hits and six walks while striking out 24 batters. The Mets have the following career numbers against Fried:

The Mets find themselves playing another rubber game as they look to win their 7th consecutive series to start off 2022. Last night the Mets couldn’t move beyond a late Kyle Schwarber bomb, which has been the theme for the last year or so when he plays against the Mets.

Max Scherzer will make the national televised start for the Amazin’s tonight. In four games and 25 innings this season, Max has a 1.80 ERA, 2.01 FIP, 0.760 WHIP and a 206 ERA+. He also has a league leading H/9 rate at 4.0. He’s allowed a total of five runs so far this season, but only two runs in his last 19 innings of work. This includes a five inning start against the Phillies where he allowed only one run from five hits while striking out 7. The Phillies have the following numbers against him:

  • Odubel Herrera 16-54, 4 2B, 3B, 2 HR, 6 BB, 10 K
  • J.T. Realmuto 6-53, 2B, 3 BB, 16 K
  • Jean Segura 9-27, HR, BB, 6 K
  • Rhys Hoskins 1-23, 2B, BB, 12 K
  • Bryce Harper 3-14, 2 2B, HR, 5 BB, 8 K
  • Nick Castellanos 2-11, 2 2B, BB, 4 K
  • Didi Gregorius 1-10, 3 K
  • Alec Bohm 2-10, 5 K
  • Kyle Schwarber 1-6, 4 BB, 3 K

The Mets bats will try to wake themselves up tonight against Zach Eflin. In Eflin’s first four starts this season he has pitched 19 2/3 innings with a 3.20 ERA, 2.95 FIP, 1.119 WHIP and a 121 ERA+. It’s only one month of the season so far but those are all career bests for Eflin. Most of the runs scored on Eflin came from back to back starts in the middle of the month where he allowed 8 runs, only 6 earned, over two starts. He rebounded in his last start against the Rockies where he allowed only one run over six innings.

Last year Eflin faced the Mets twice and allowed only three runs despite the Mets recording 15 hits against him over 12 innings (that really does feel like the 2021 Mets, right?). The Mets have the following career numbers against Eflin:

  • Jeff McNeil 6-22, 2 2B, 3B, 2 BB, 3 K
  • Pete Alonso 3-15, HR, 3 K
  • Dominic Smith 5-15, 3 2B, BB, 5 K
  • Brandon Nimmo 1-11, 2 BB, 5 K
  • Starling Marte 7-11, 5 2B, HR, K (2.000 OPS)
  • Robinson Canó 4-10, HR
  • Francisco Lindor 0-7, 2 K
  • James McCann 2-6, K
  • Eduardo Escobar 1-3, K

The Mets look to take the series this evening after a historic night at Citi Field.

The Mets threw their second no-hitter, and first combined no-hitter, in team history last night with James McCann catching Tylor Megill, Drew Smith, Joely Rodríguez, Seth Lugo, and Edwin Díaz. Last night’s game is an instant classic for the Mets. The scenes, sounds and all around feelings that Mets fans felt yesterday are now eternal to Mets history.

And the Mets get to play another game tonight, after all of that energy, let’s get to it!

Taijuan Walker returns to the mound tonight! He left his first start after tossing two innings (no runs, no walks, four strikeouts) with a shoulder injury. After the game it was determined to be bursitis and Walker has responded to a cortisone shot well.

His first start was also against the Phillies. Walker gets to face them again tonight and there’s a chance, depending on what the Mets do with the double header against the Braves next week, that Walker’s next start after this one is also against the Phillies. Last season he had a 3.76 ERA over five starts and 26 1/3 innings against the Phillies. The Phillies have the following numbers against Walker:

  • Didi Gregorius 4-17, 2B, 3 K
  • Bryce Harper 3-15, 2B, HR, BB, 3 K
  • Alec Bohm 4-10, 2B, HR, 2 BB, K
  • Kyle Schwarber 5-11, 5 HR, BB, 2 K (2.318 OPS)
  • J.T. Realmuto 3-10, HR, K
  • Jean Segura 3-10, HR, K
  • Odubel Herrera 0-8, K
  • Rhys Hoskins 1-8, 4 K
  • Nick Castellanos 2-7, HR, 3 K

The Mets bats will their first 2022 look at Kyle Gibson today, who is making his fifth start of the season. Over his first four games and 23 1/3 innings he ha a 3.47 ERA, 3.70 FIP, 0.986 WHIP and a 112 ERA+. He had a strong first start of the season where he allowed two hits and no runs over seven innings against the Athletics. Since then he has a 4.96 ERA over 16 1/3 innings. In two starts against the Mets last season, he allowed four runs from 11 hits and five walks over 12 2/3 innings while striking out 12 Mets batters. The Mets have the following numbers against Gibson:

  • Francisco Lindor 15-43, 2B, 5 BB, 7 K
  • Robinson Canó 8-33, 2B, BB, 3 K
  • James McCann 6-25, BB, 6 K
  • Mark Canha 0-14, BB, 3 K
  • Pete Alonso 0-8, BB, 3 K
  • Brandon Nimmo 2-8, 2B, HR, BB, K
  • J.D. Davis 1-5, 3 BB, 2 K
  • Jeff McNeil 3-8, 2B, HR, K
  • Eduardo Escobar 2-4, 2 BB, K
  • Dominic Smith 2-5, 2B

Game Preview: Phillies vs Mets

The Mets return home tonight after winning six straight series to open up the season. The Mets haven’t faced an NL East opponent since playing the Nationals and Phillies on the road to open the season – and now the Mets will play their next four series against NL East teams (Phillies, Braves, Phillies again, and the Nationals). On top of that, the Mets are about to play 11 games in 10 days before their next scheduled day off.

The Phillies are on a bit of a hot streak themselves, winning their last four games, which has improved their record to 10-10 on the season and they now have a positive run differential (+12). The Mets, who have won seven of their last ten games, have a run differential of +33.

Tylor Megill will get the series started tonight for the Mets. In his first four games this season he has tossed 23 innings with a 2.35 ERA, 2.67 FIP, 0.913 WHIP and a 157 ERA+. This includes his second start of the season which was against Philly. In that game he allowed only three hits and struck out five batters over five and a third innings. No runs. No walks. The Phillies have the following numbers against Megill:

The Mets will face Aaron Nola again tonight! In his first four starts of the season, he has pitched 21 2/3 innings with a 3.74 ERA, 4.27 FIP, 0.877 WHIP and a 103 ERA+. Back on April 13th the Mets scored three runs on Nola from three hits and three walks over three and a third innings. In his first two starts (including the one against the Mets) Nola allowed seven runs over 9 1/3 innings. In his last two starts he has allowed only two runs over 12 1/3 innings. The Mets have the following numbers against Nola:
