Game Preview: Phillies vs Mets

The Mets try to shake off their second series loss of the year while they welcome the Phillies to Citi Field tonight. The Mets are coming off of a wild road trip that involved snow in Colorado and a crazy back and forth loss in San Francisco a few days ago. The Phillies are coming off of a four game series split with the Braves.

Carlos Carrasco looks to give the Mets a step back to normalcy tonight. He has a 3.50 ERA, 2.94 FIP, 1.144 WHIP and a 112 ERA+ over eight starts and 46 1/3 innings. In his last start he allowed only one run over 5 1/3 innings against the Rockies, allowing seven hits and only one run. This will be Carrasco’s first start against the Phillies this season. Last season he made one start against the Phillies and held them to two runs from five hits and two walks in six innings of work. The Philies have the following career numbers against Carrasco:

  • Nick Castellanos 10-46, 4 2B, 3 BB, 14 K
  • Didi Gregorius 3-16, 2B, 3 K
  • Jean Segura 7-16, 2B, 3 HR, 3 K
  • Bryce Harper 1-6, BB, K
  • J.T. Realmuto 2-7, 2 K
  • Odubel Herrera 1-3
  • Kyle Schwarber 0-3, K
  • Rhys Hoskins 0-1, BB, K

The Mets draw Bailey Falter for his second start of the season. Over five games, mostly in relief, Falter has pitched 12.0 innings with a 3.75 ERA, 4.64 FIP, 1.250 WHIP and a 109 ERA+. His last outing was his first start of the season and it went well, allowing only one run from five hits over 4 2/3 innings. Most notably in that start, he tossed 65 pitches, where previously he hit around 30 pitches three times. This includes an outing against the Mets where he tossed 32 pitches over two innings allowing a run off of a hit and a walk. The Mets have the following numbers against Falter:

  • Pete Alonso 0-1
  • Mark Canha 0-1
  • Eduardo Escobar 1-1, 3B
  • Francisco Lindor 0-0, BB
  • Starling Marte 0-1
  • Brandon Nimmo 0-1, K

Game Preview: Mets @ Giants

The Mets and Giants played a wild game last night in San Francisco. The Giants had a huge lead early the Mets scored 10 runs in the final three frames to the lead (including a seven run eighth inning). However they couldn’t hold onto the lead in the bottom of the ninth and ended up losing the game 13-12. The Mets will play a late afternoon game today to decide the series.

Thomas Szapucki will make his 2022 debut with the Mets today! He pitched in one game last season, his only major league game, where he allowed six runs from seven hits in 3 2/3 innings. About a month after his major league debut, he was sidelined for the rest of the season recovering from ulnar nerve transposition surgery. This year in the minors he has started seven games, tossing 22 innings with a 2.86 ERA and a 1.318 WHIP. In his last start he was used only for one inning, probably in preparation for being called up today. Before that he had a three start stretch where he tossed 71, 67 and 70 pitches which lead to four innings, four innings and five innings of work. That’s a useful barometer to figure out his limit this afternoon.

The Mets bats will get a look at Jakob Junis today. The long time Royal signed this off-season with the Giants and is off-season. Over five games and three starts, he has pitched 26 2/3 innings with a 2.70 ERA, 3.65 FIP, 1.013 WHIP and a 151 ERA+. As a starter only he has pitched 16 2/3 innings with a 4.32 ERA and 4.99 FIP. He missed the Mets earlier this season and the Mets as a whole haven’t faced Junis a whole lot:

  • Francisco Lindor 18-36, 3 2B, 3B, 5 HR, 14 RBI, 2 K, .500/.500/1.056
  • Eduardo Escobar 1-6, HR, 5 K
  • Mark Canha 2-5, 2B, HR, BB, K
  • Pete Alonso 1-3, K
  • Luis Guillorme 0-3

I wake up before 5 AM during the work week, so when the Mets and Giants play, it’s as if the game was played on a different planet. I generally have little to no insight as to how the game is going until I wake up in the morning. The last thing I remember before going to sleep last night was a notification about Brandon Crawford hitting a two run homer, giving the Giants a 2-0 lead.

This is all to say, I was extremely surprised when I woke up and saw the Mets won 13-3 while recording 18 hits. This included homers from Pete, Jeff and Mark. J.D. Davis, who has struggled so far this season, went 4-5 at the plate! And now the Mets are in position to take another series this year with a win against the Giants tonight.

Chris Bassitt looks to make that happen for the Mets. Over eight games and 48 2/3 innings this year he has a 2.77 ERA, 3.80 FIP, 1.089 WHIP and 140 ERA+. He’s coming off of a start where he allowed four runs and nine hits (season high) against the Cardinals. His worst start this season was against the Giants, so he’ll be searching for revenge tonight. In that start he allowed five runs from eight hits over six innings. The Giants have the following career numbers against him:

  • Tommy La Stella 3-12, 2B, BB, 2 K
  • Brandon Belt 2-9, HR, BB, 3 K
  • Brandon Crawford 4-9, 2B, HR, BB, K
  • Evan Longoria 1-8, 3 K
  • Wilmer Flores 1-6, K
  • Darin Ruf 1-5, BB, 2 K
  • Mike Yastrzemski 2-6, 3 K
  • Joc Pederson 2-3, 2B, K

The Mets bats get to see Logan Webb again tonight. Webb has pitched eight games and 48 1/3 innings with a 3.54 ERA, 3.11 FIP, 1.262 WHIP and a 112 ERA+. Since his second start of the season this year, Webb has tossed 34 1/3 innings and allowed 17 runs (4.46 ERA). This includes a start against the Mets where he allowed three runs over 3 2/3 innings from six hits and three walks. The Mets have the following career numbers against him:

  • Eduardo Escobar 3-11, 2B, 3 K
  • Mark Canha 3-7, 2 HR, 2 BB, 3 K
  • Brandon Nimmo 0-6, BB, 2 K
  • Pete Alonso 1-5, HR, BB, K
  • Starling Marte 2-5
  • Jeff McNeil 0-5
  • J.D. Davis 1-3, K
  • Patrick Mazeika 1-2, BB, K
  • Dominic Smith 2-3
  • Luis Guillorme 1-1, BB
  • Francisco Lindor 2-2, 2B

The Mets won another series yesterday with their 2-0 win in Colorado. The Mets, who now have an 8 game lead, will now open up a series with the Giants in San Francisco. When the two teams met up last time in Queens the Giants were 7-2 and only a half game out of first place. The Mets took 3 of 4 games, serving as a statement series for the ball club. The Giants are now 22-18 and have currently lost four games in a row. They know the Mets are hurting right now and will do everything they can to take advantage and reverse their fortunes.

David Peterson gets the start for the Mets this evening. In the majors this year he has pitched four games, three starts, totaling 19 innings with a 1.89 ERA, 3.36 FIP, 1.105 WHIP and a 207 ERA+. His last outing on May 3rd was his roughest so far in the majors this year, allowing four runs, three earned, over five innings against the Braves. Since then he has allowed no runs from seven hits over two starts and 11 innings in the minors. Only two players on the Giants roster have seen Peterson in a major league game before:

  • Kevin Padlo 1-3, 2B, 2 K
  • Thairo Estrada 1-2, K

The Mets draw the veteran Alex Cobb for the series opener. Over six games and 25 2/3 innings he has a 5.61 ERA, 2.67 FIP, 1.519 WHIP and a 71 ERA+. He is coming off of an incredibly rough start in Colorado that completely blew up his season stats. He allowed seven runs from 10 hits over 5 1/3 innings. Before that start his ERA was sitting at 3.98 from 9 earned runs on the season. Against the Mets this year he allowed four runs, three earned over 4 1/3 innings from six hits and no walks. The Mets have the following numbers against Cobb:

  • Eduardo Escobar 4-13, HR, BB, 5 K
  • Francisco Lindor 3-10, 4 K
  • Mark Canha 1-6, 2 K
  • Starling Marte 2-4, 2B
  • Jeff McNeil 1-3, 2B
  • Brandon Nimmo 0-3, 3 K
  • Pete Alonso 0-2
  • Travis Jankowski 1-2
  • J.D. Davis 1-2

Game Preview: Mets @ Rockies

The Mets and Rockies split their doubleheader yesterday, forcing a rubber game today! The Mets are looking to avoid dropping their second series of the year and are going to try to channel the vibes from the first game yesterday where they scored early and had threats to score often.

Taijuan Walker gets the start for the Mets. Over five starts and 23 innings this year, he has a 3.52 ERA, 4.09 FIP, 1.217 WHIP and a 111 ERA+. This will be his first start this season against a team whose primary color isn’t red (three starts against the Phillies, one start each against the Nationals and Cardinals). After shutting out the Nationals on the 12th over seven innings, Walker allowed three runs over five innings against the Cardinals in a game the Mets eventually lost 4-3. The Rockies have the following numbers against Walker:

  • Charlie Blackmon 4-18, 2 BB, 4 K
  • Kris Bryant 3-7, HR, K
  • C.J. Cron 1-9, K
  • José Iglesias 3-7, 2B, BB
  • Randal Grichuk 0-4, BB, 2 K

The Mets bats will get a look at Austin Gomber. Gomber has made seven starts and pitched 39 innings this season with a 4.38 ERA, 4.45 FIP, 1.231 WHIP and a 104 ERA+. In his last twos tarts he has allowed eight earned runs from nine hits and five walks while pitching 11 1/3 innings. Gomber did face the Mets last season, his first with the Rockies, in Queens. He went deep into the game, eight innings, allowing two runs from four hits and an no walks while striking out eight. The Mets have the following numbers against him:

  • Francisco Lindor 1-5, K
  • Eduardo Escobar 0-3
  • Tomás Nido 0-3, K
  • Dominic Smith 0-3, 2 K
  • Travis Jankowski 1-2, 2B

When Trevor Williams started last week, it looked to be a short-term situation with Megill on the injured list and David Peterson not ready to come back up yet. Then Max Scherzer got injured – Williams potentially could be in the rotation for a chunk of time now. A lot of the Mets hopes now rest on Williams stepping into this role.

We could not possibly ask more from Trevor Williams than what we got in the last start. Well there’s one thing we could ask – can you do that again? Williams pitched four scoreless innings, scattering four hits and striking out six batters. His last two outings now have had a combined 7 2/3 scoreless innings, and have dropped his ERA from 8.59 to 4.20. He also hit a season high in pitches thrown his last time out at 65. His season high last year was 104 with the Cubs, 93 with the Mets. The longer he stays in the Mets rotation, the deeper we’ll start seeing him go into games.

The Rockies have the following career numbers against Williams:

  • Kris Bryant 6-17, 3B, 2 HR, 7 BB, 3 K
  • Charlie Blackmon 3-8, 2B, BB, K
  • José Iglesias 2-8, 3B
  • Randal Grichuk 2-5, BB, K
  • Ryan McMahon 1-5, 3 K

Game Preview: Mets @ Rockies, Game 1

For the second straight day, the Mets and Rockies have a game scheduled that is threatened by the weather. The snow overnight in the Denver area is giving way to snow showers, rain showers and possibly a thunderstorm this afternoon. The weather conditions are still going to be fairly miserable, but could be possibly playable.

Right now both teams are scheduled to play a split doubleheader and this might be the only time where a split doubleheader makes more sense than a single admission situation. The Rockies have the flexibility now of cancelling one of the games today if need be and trying again for two games tomorrow. The counterpoint is, the Rockies knew the weather this weekend and just could have rescheduled last night’s game on Sunday anyway, avoiding this scenario.

If the Mets are able to play this afternoon, Carlos Carrasco will take the mound. Over seven starts and 41 innings this year he has a 3.73 ERA, 3.00 FIP, 1.122 WHIP and a 104 ERA+. He struggled in his last start, allowing four runs over 4 1/3 innings from eight hits and a walk. It was only the second time this season that he allowed anything above two runs to score. Between coming over from Cleveland last year and missing when the Mets played the Rockies, very few players on the Rockies roster have seen him in a major league game:

  • José Iglesias 11-33, 6 2B, 3 BB, 8 K
  • Kris Bryant 2-9, HR, 4 K (Returning from Injured List this series)
  • C.J. Cron 4-7, 2 2B, HR, K
  • Randal Grichuk 2-7, 2 2B

The Mets bats will get a look at Germán Márquez today. Márquez is off to a rough start this year posting a 6.16 ERA, 4.76 FIP, 1.526 WHIP and a 74 ERA+ over seven games and 38 innings. That being said, he has started to knock down his ERA in his last start, tossing back to back games allowing only three earned runs in six innings of work. He was pretty good against the Mets last year, holding the Mets to only three runs over 13 innings across two starts. The Mets have the following career numbers against him:

  • Eduardo Escobar 12-23, 2 2B, 3B, HR, 6 K
  • Starling Marte 3-15, 3B, BB, 4 K
  • Travis Jankowski 3-10, 2 BB, 2 K

The weather this weekend looks like summer in Queens. Sunny days. Temperatures possibly in the 90’s.

And the Mets game tonight is under threat due to snow.

The Mets head to Denver to start a three game set with the Rockies. Temperatures are supposed to hit the 40’s today and then drop into the upper 20’s tonight with rain turning into snow showers. The National Weather Service has put out a Winter Storm Warning for four inches to 12 inches. Tonight’s game is in jeopardy.

If the Mets are able to play tonight, Carlos Carrasco will take the mound. Game Preview: Cardinals vs Mets

The Mets and Cardinals will try to end their four game set during an afternoon getaway game! It has been raining across the region for a better portion of the night and rain should stop in Flushing in the late morning. The Mets and Cardinals should be able to get the game in today as long as the field conditions held up overnight.

The Mets turn to Chris Bassitt to lead the way to a series victory this afternoon. Over his first seven starts and 42 1/3 innings, he has a 2.34 ERA, 3.35 FIP, 1.016 WHIP and a 167 ERA+. He has almost identical pitching lines in his last two starts, pitching 5 2/3 innings, allowing five hits and one run. Bassitt locked the Cardinals down over six innings at the end of April allowing no runs and only two hits. The Cardinals have the following career numbers against Bassitt:

  • Albert Pujols 5-12, 2B, HR
  • Nolan Arenado 2-3, 2 BB
  • Paul Goldschmidt 1-5, BB, K
  • Dylan Carlson 0-3, K
  • Tommy Edman 0-2, BB
  • Tyler O’Neill 0-3, K
  • Harrison Bader 0-2
  • Brendan Donovan 0-1
  • Yadier Molina 1-2

The Mets bats finally broke out late in last night’s game, scoring 5 runs in the 8th inning to put the game out of reach for the Cardinals. Hopefully the Mets can continue that late momentum from last night against today’s starter, Dakota Hudson.

Hudson has made seven starts and pitched 35 1/3 innings this season with a 3.06 ERA, 5.04 FIP, 1.330 WHIP and a 125 ERA+. He has three starts season where he has allowed no runs, totaling 17 2/3 innings (this includes his last start, five shutout innings against the Giants). He has allowed exactly three earned runs in each of his of his other four starts. Even stranger his season so far has been a pattern of allow three runs in back to back starts, shutout out for back to back starts, allow three runs in back to back starts, shutout. If the pattern holds he should shut the Mets out today. Hopefully the Mets can end the pattern! The Mets have the following numbers against him:

  • Pete Alonso 2-5, HR, BB, K
  • J.D. Davis 1-3
  • Eduardo Escobar 1-3, HR, K
  • Tomás Nido 0-3, K
  • Brandon Nimmo 0-3, 2 K
  • Dominic Smith 1-2, 2B, BB
  • Mark Canha 2-2
  • Jeff McNeil 0-2, K

Game Preview: Cardinals vs Mets

The Mets and Cardinals split a back and forth traditional doubleheader yesterday. The Mets took the first game 3-1 thanks to some early runs and the ability to hold off a late Cardinals threat. The second game featured multiple lead changes, missed opportunities by both teams and mistakes by both teams. The Mets got a split against a good team and try to clinch the series split this evening.

The series finale tomorrow is an early afternoon game. If that game takes about 3 hours to complete than both clubs will play a total of four complete games in a span of 51 hours. Bullpen management and depth are going to be critical for both clubs tonight.

For the Mets, Max Scherzer looks to make an easier night for the pen a reality. Over seven starts and 44 innings he has a 2.66 ERA, 3.01 FIP, 0.909 WHIP and a 145 ERA+. He’s coming off of a strong start against the Mariners where he allowed only one run from three hits over seven innings. He also faced the Cardinals already this season didn’t allow any runs over seven innings while striking out 10 batters. The Cardinals have the following numbers against Scherzer:

  • Paul Goldschmidt 7-35, BB, 16 K
  • Yadier Molina 1-19, 2B, 5 K
  • Corey Dickerson 5-15, HR, 2 K
  • Albert Pujols 1-12, 2B, 3 BB, 3 K
  • Nolan Arenado 2-13, BB, 5 K
  • Tommy Edman 4-11, 2B, HR, BB, 3 K
  • Harrison Bader 2-12, 2B, 4 K
  • Dylan Carlson 0-10, 6 K
  • Edmundo Sosa 1-6, 4 K
  • Tyler O’Neill 0-6, 4 K

Jordan Hick gets the start for the Cardinals. Over seven games and five starts this year he has tossed 21 2/3 innings with a 4.15 ERA, 4.42 FIP, 1.154 WHIP and 94 ERA+. All ten runs he’s allowed this year have from his 17 2/3 innings as a starter (5.09 ERA). When the Mets saw him at the end of April, he was making his second start of the season and allowed two runs from two hits and two walks over two innings. He is slowly getting stretched out though to go deeper into games. He tossed 42 pitches against the Mets that day, since then he has tossed 63, 68 and 77. In that most recent start where he threw 77 pitches he pitched five innings. This is what the Cardinals need from him today. The Mets have the following career numbers against himg:

  • Brandon Nimmo 1-2, BB
  • Pete Alonso 1-2
  • Francisco Lindor 0-2, 2 K
  • Jeff McNeil 1-2, 2B
  • Mark Canha 0-1
  • J.D. Davis 0-1
  • Eduardo Escobar 0-0, BB
  • Dominic Smith 0-1
