Game Preview: Mets @ Padres

The Mets continue their west coast road trip after a wild series with the Padres. This past weekend the Mets lost the first two games to the first place Dodgers but then the Mets showed us the same magic they have brought all season. On Saturday they bounced back behind David Peterson to win 9-4. Yesterday they overcame a 2-0 deficit in the first inning to win a back and forth, extra inning duel to split the series. Was this a playoff series preview?

The Mets will now go from facing one possible playoff contended to another – the San Diego Padres. The Padres have had a similar weekend to the Mets as they took on the first place Brewers. After losing the first game on Thursday, they went on to win the next three games. In a way, this set of seven games for both the Padres and the Mets mimic October with both teams facing tough opponents before each other.

Carlos Carrasco takes the mound for the Mets tonight. Over his first ten games and 57 innings of the season he has a 3.63 ERA, 2.93 FIP, 1.211 WHIP and a 110 ERA+. Carrasco shut out the Nationals his last time out on the mound, holding them to four hits and five walks but didn’t allow anyone to cross the plate. It was a good bounce back for Carrasco from the five runs he allowed to the Phillies in the start before that. The Padres have the following career numbers against Carrasco:

  • Eric Hosmer 8-31, 2 2B, 3B, 4 BB, 8 K
  • Manny Machado 2-7, 2 BB, 2 K
  • Jorge Alfaro 1-7, BB, 2 K
  • Nomar Mazara 3-8, 2B, 3 K
  • Jurickson Profar 3-5, HR, BB, K
  • Wil Myers 2-3, BB, K

The Mets bats will get a look at Blake Snell tonight. Over three games and 15.0 innings, Snell has logged a 4.80 ERA, 4.07 FIP, 1.067 WHIP and an 81 ERA+. He’s coming off of his best start of the season so far, where he allowed two runs from two hits and five walks over six innings. Snell faced the Mets twice last June in back to back starts. In San Diego he allowed only a hit and a walk over seven innings while striking out 10 Mets. Then in Queens he allowed three runs from five hit sand three walks over four innings. The Mets have the following career numbers against Snell:

  • Francisco Lindor 2-20, 2B, 3 K
  • Mark Canha 3-13, HR, 2 BB, 7 K
  • Starling Marte 3-9, 2B, HR, K
  • Eduardo Escobar 0-8, 3 K
  • Pete Alonso 1-5, HR, 2 BB
  • Brandon Nimmo 1-3, 2B, BB
  • J.D. Davis 0-2, BB, K
  • Jeff McNeil 2-3, K

Over ten starts and 53 innings he has a 2.89 ERA, 4.50 FIP, 1.113 WHIP and a 144 ERA+. He’s coming off of his second worst start of the year against the Pirates where he allowed four runs over six innings from eight hits and a walk. If he’s had one weak point, it’s been homers. He’s allowed nine of them this year, include two in his last start and four against Philly on May 14th. He has a 1.5 HR/9 rate, his career rate is 0.9.

David Peterson is 2-0 over six games and five starts this season, tossing 29 2/3 innings with a 3.03 ERA, 3.99 FIP, 1.180 WHIP and a 132 ERA+. The month of May hasn’t been the greatest for Peterson as he has allowed 10 runs, 9 earned over three starts. What do I have in common with the New York Mets bats? We both fell asleep last night before 10 PM eastern time! The Mets lost a tough pitcher’s battle last night against the Dodgers and look to bounce back tonight!

Chris Bassitt has made 10 starts and pitched 59 innings this season with a 3.66 ERA, 4.31 FIP, 1.169 WHIP and a 109 ERA+. He hit a rough patch in mid-May, allowing 12 runs over two starts and 10 2/3 innings (he’s only allowed a total of 24 runs this season). Chris bounced back though in his last start, holding the Phillies to one run over six innings from two hits and three walks. He did face the Dodgers in 2021 and it didn’t go so well – Bassitt allowed four runs from nine hits and a walk over six innings. The Dodgers have the following career numbers against him:

  • Mookie Betts 1-4
  • Kevin Pillar 1-4
  • Austin Barnes 2-3, 2B, K
  • Gavin Lux 0-2, BB
  • Justin Turner 2-3, 2B

The Mets bats get a resurgent Tyler Anderson tonight. In his career, Anderson has a 4.49 ERA, 4.35 FIP, 1.292 WHIP, and a 102 ERA+. This season, over nine games and 49.2 innings with a 2.90 ERA, 3.26 FIP, 1.007 WHIP and a 143 ERA+. Anderson has had one bad start this year where he allowed seven runs from 10 hits over 6.0 innings. Since then he has tossed 21 innings over three games, allowing only two runs from 17 hits and a walk. He made a start against the Mets as a Pirate last year before he was traded to the Mariners. In that start he allowed two runs from six hits over five innings. The Mets have the following numbers against Anderson:

  • Eduardo Escobar 2-11, 2B, 2 BB, 2 K
  • Starling Marte 3-13, 2B, 2 K
  • Mark Canha 2-8, 2 K
  • Brandon Nimmo 3-6, HR, K
  • Francisco Lindor 0-3
  • Pete Alonso 0-2
  • Jeff McNeil 1-1

Game Preview: Mets @ Dodgers

The Mets start their largest challenge of the season tonight – a ten game road trip where they will face the Dodgers, Padres and Angels.

Overall the Mets have had a difficult schedule to start the season and this is the the stretch that feels like the peak. They are about to play three good teams, including one of the best in baseball, for ten road games. Most of the games are happening outside normal, east coast fan viewing hours. The Mets though are also riding a six game winning streak and are coming off their first two sweeps of the season.

Taijuan Walker looks to keep the Mets on the winning path tonight. Over his first seven starts and 35.0 innings, Walker has a 2.83 ERA, 3.83 FIP, 1.257 WHIP and a 141 ERA+. Walker has allowed 12 runs, 11 earned this season, and seven of those runs came against the Phillies one start. Since that start he has allowed five runs over 24 innings with a 1.88 ERA. Walker faced the Dodgers last season in back to back starts, allowing one run over 6 `2/3’s on August 14th and then four runs over six innings on August 19th. The Dodgers have the following career numbers against him:

  • Trea Turner 4-13, 2B, BB, 2 K
  • Cody Bellinger 3-14, HR, 3 K
  • Justin Turner 3-13, 2B, BB, 3 K
  • Chris Taylor 2-11, 2B, 2 BB, 4 K
  • Freddie Freeman 2-11, HR, 4 K
  • Mookie Betts 2-5, BB, 2 K
  • Will Smith 2-6, 2B, HR

The Mets bats will get a look at Tony Gonsolin who is off to a tremendous start this year. Over nine starts and 45.0 innings, Tony has a 1.80 ERA, 3.19 FIP, 0.933 WHIP and a 230 ERA+ (all career bests). He has been a bit more human over his last three starts, allowing five runs over 18 innings, translating to a 2.50 ERA. Tony missed the month of August last season, which is when both series with the Mets happened. There are only two Mets on the roster who have seen him in a major league game: Eduardo Escobar (5-13, 2B, 2 HR, 3 K) and Starling Marte (0-4).

Game Preview: Nationals vs Mets

The Mets go for their sixth straight win and second straight series this afternoon against the Nationals. The Mets are about to depart on a tough, 10 game road trip but before they head to the airport they have one more thing left to do – beat the Nationals again.

Last night the Mets fired on all cylinders, crushing the Nationals 10-0 behind good hitting and pitching. Carlos Carrasco looks to keep the good pitching going as he makes his 10th start of the season. So far he has pitched 52 innings with a 3.98 ERA, 2.81 FIP, 1.154 WHIP and a 99 ERA+. He is coming off of a roughs tart against the Phillies where he allowed five runs from six hits and a walk in 5 2/3 innings. Carrasco has faced the Nationals twice this season, the first time he allowed one run over 5 2/3 and the second time he allowed two runs over 6 2/3. The Nationals have the following numbers against him:

  • Alcides Escobar 9-42, 2B, 6 K
  • Nelson Cruz 13-35, 5 HR, BB, 11 K
  • Dee Strange GOrdon 3-14, BB, 2 K
  • Josh Bell 5-12, 2B, 3 K
  • Maikel Franco 3-11, 2 2B, K
  • Cesar Hernandez 0-6, 3 K
  • Juan Soto 0-5, BB, K
  • Victor Robles 1-5, 2 K

Evan Lee will make his major league debut for the Nationals this afternoon. The Nationals DFA’d Aaron Sanchez over the weekend, creating an opening in their rotation. They also have Strasburg on the way, the so it is unclear how long Lee will stay in the rotation. Lee was drafted by the Nationals in 2018 and has played in the Rookie League, the New York Penn League, High A East and Double A (he has not pitched a game at Triple A yet). For Harrisburg this season he has made seven starts, totaling 30.0 innings with a 3.60 ERA and 1.333 WHIP. His last four outings he has made it to the fifth inning or later, topping out at 65 pitches – which gives us an approximate idea of his maximum length for today.

The Mets look to take the series against the Nationals tonight and stretch their winning streak to five games! Last night the Nationals got to David Peterson early, scoring three runs in the first inning. The Mets immediately came back scoring twice in the first, then four times, then three times, then three times again. By the end of the night the Mets scored 13 times on 16 hits including three hit nights from Starling Marte, Francisco Lindor and Nick Plummer.

  • Josh Bell 2-6, 2B, HR, BB, K
  • Nelson Cruz 2-4, BB, K

The Mets bats will get another look at Patrick Corbin. Over 10 games and 50.0 innings, Corbin has a 6.30 ERA, 4.52 FIP, 1.660 WHIP and a 62 ERA+. His last strong start was against the Mets, where he held the Mets scoreless over five innings despite allowing three hits and four walks. The Mets eventually won that game 4-2. Game Preview: Nationals vs Mets

The 2022 Mets finally completed a three game sweep! The New York Mets, who have been playing good baseball the entire season really took the baseball idiom “just keeping winning two out of three” to heart so far this season – as they have basically literally just done that. Nick Castellanos last night hit a three run homer late in the game to put the Phillies in the lead and the game looked more like “hey the Mets won two out of three”. Plummer then hit a solo shot to tie it and Eduardo Escobar won the game in the 10th. These Mets!

Anyway, the Nationals come to town today with the New York Mets still flying high on the excitement of last night. David Peterson will get the start today. So far in five games, four starts, this season he has pitched 25.0 innings with a 2.16 ERA, 3.62 FIP, 1.000 WHIP and a 182 ERA+. He rejoined the Mets rotation his last time out against the Giants and held them to two runs and three hits over six innings. Peterson made one start against the Nationals last season where he held them to one run from two hits and three walks in 4 2/3 innings of work. The Nationals have the following career numbers against Peterson:

  • Juan Soto 1-4, 2B, 2 BB, 2 K
  • Victor Robles 0-3, BB
  • Luis Garcia 0-3, K
  • Josh Bell 0-2
  • Maikel Franco 1-2, 2B, K
  • Carter Kieboom 0-2, K
  • Joe Ross 0-1

The Mets bats will get another look at Erick Fedde. Over nine starts and 45 2/3 innings this year, Fedde has posted a 3.55 ERA, 4.17 FIP, 1.380 WHIP and a 110 ERA+ (all career bests so far). This is due to his month of May where he allowed six runs from 21 hits and 14 walks over five starts and 27 2/3 innings. That translates into a 1.95 ERA and a 3.93 FIP. His first start of the season was against the Mets who scored twice off of five hits and two walks over five innings. The Mets have the following numbers against Fedde:

  • Brandon Nimmo 5-22, 3 BB, 4 K
  • Pete Alonso 6-14, 2 2B, 4 BB, 2 K
  • Dominic Smith 2-17, 2 BB, 3 K
  • Jeff McNeil 6-14, 2B, 2 BB, K
  • Francisco Lindor 3-12, HR, BB, K
  • Eduardo Escobar 3-10, 2B, K
  • Luis Guillorme 2-5, 2 BB, K
  • Starling Marte 1-6, 2B, K
  • Mark Canha 2-2

Game Preview: Phillies vs Mets

The Mets go for the sweep tonight!

The Mets took an early 1-0 lead last night and the Phillies came right back and made it 2-1. The Mets opened the floodgates and won 8-2. Now the Mets go for the series sweep tonight against an old friend in Zack Wheeler on national television.

Chris Bassitt gets the start for the Amazin’s today. Over nine starts and 53.0 innings he has a 3.91 ERA, 4.54 FIP, 1.208 WHIP and a 100 ERA+. He is coming off of his worst start of the year against the Giants, where he allowed eight runs over 4 1/3 innings (this was that wild game the Mets eventually lost 12-13). In his last two starts he has allowed 12 runs over 10 2/3 innings. To put that in perspective, he has only allowed 23 runs the entire season. Bassitt has faced the Phillies once already this year and held them to one run over 5 2/3 innings from five hits and walk in Philadelphia. The Phillies have the following career numbers against him:

  • Nick Castellanos 7-17, 3 2B, HR, BB
  • Kyle Schwarber 3-6, 2B, K

  • Alec Bohm 1-3
  • Bryce Harper 0-3, 2 K
  • Rhys Hoskins 1-3, 2B, K
  • Jean Segura 1-2, HR, BB

Zack Wheeler has pitched eight games and 45 1/3 innings this year with a 3.38 ERA, 2.33 FIP, 1.147 WHIP and a 118 ERA+. Wheeler is coming off of his first double digit strikeout game of the season against the Braves where he held them to two runs from eight hits over 6 2/3 innings while striking out 10. In general, he’s seen a huge improvement in strikeouts from April to May. In April he struck out 18 batters over four starts. Over four starts in May he has struck out 33 batters. Wheeler has faced the Mets once this season, back on April 12th, where he held the Mets to one run from two hits over 4 2/3 innings, in a game the Mets eventually won 2-0. The Mets have the following numbers against Wheeler:

  • Brandon Nimmo 8-28, 2 2B, HR, 5 K

  • J.D. Davis 5-13, 2 2B, HR, 5 K
  • Eduardo Escobar 2-10, BB, 3 K
  • Starling Marte 2-10, 2B, K

Game Preview: Phillies vs Mets

Last night was like if the Mets were possessed by the San Francisco Giants. The Mets got out to an early 7-0 lead and seemed to be in cruise control until the 6th inning. Carrasco gave up a couple of soft hits and the Phillies were in business. They kept the line moving and scored six runs. The Mets were able to claw another run out in the next frame, and held on for the 8-6 victory.

Now the Mets look to take the series against Philly tonight with Taijuan Walker on the mound. Over his first six starts and 30 innings he has a 2.70 ERA, 3.71 FIP, 1.167 WHIP, and a 146 ERA+. He’s coming off of one of his best starts of the season where he allowed no runs over seven innings (second time this month!) from five hits and two walks while striking out 6.

Walker has faced the Phillies a lot this year. Over his first two starts (separated by 19 days from an injury he suffered in his first start) he allowed no runs over seven innings from two hits and two walks. Then in his next start, in Philly, he allowed seven runs, six earned, over four innings from nine hits and two walks. To put that in perspective, he’s allowed ten total runs this season. Seven were in that one start. The Phillies have the following numbers against Walker:

  • Bryce Harper 5-20, 2 2B, 2 HR, BB, 4 K
  • Didi Gregorius 4-19, 2B, 3 K
  • Alec Bohm 6-15, 2B, HR, 2 BB, K
  • Kyle Schwarber 6-15, 2B, 5 HR, 2 BB, 3 K (1.973 OPS)
  • J.T. Realmuto 4-13, HR, BB, 2 K
  • Jean Segura 5-14, HR, K
  • Rhys Hoskins 1-12, BB, 4 K
  • Nick Castellanos 4-12, 2 HR, 3 K

The Mets bats will get a look at Zach Eflin who might be having his best season in the majors. Over seven starts and 37 innings he has a 3.65 ERA, 2.95 FIP, 1.135 WHIP and a 110 ERA+. Since facing the Mets at the start of May he has allowed three runs over 13 innings from nine hits and two walks while striking out 17 batters. That start against the Mets though wasn’t pretty (well, depending on your perspective, we are Mets fans after all). He gave up six runs, five earned from eight hits and a walk in 4 1/3 innings, a game the Mets eventually won 10-6. The Mets have the following career numbers against Zach:

  • Jeff McNeil 8-25, 3 2B, 3B, 2 BB, 3 K
  • Pete Alonso 3-17, HR, BB, 3 K
  • Dominic Smith 7-17, 4 2B, BB, 5 K
  • Brandon Nimmo 1-14, 2 BB, 5 K
  • Starling Marte 7-13, 5 2B, HR, K
  • Francisco Lindor 1-10, 4 K
  • Luis Guillorme 2-7, 2B
  • Eduardo Escobar 3-5, K
