Game Preview: Mets @ Orioles

The Mets made a quick stop in the Bronx last night and backed up deGrom up with 5 homers! Jacob recorded 12 K’s and a human 3 runs over 6.2 innings as Rosario, Nimmo, Frazier, Conforto and Bautista all took advantage of the friendly size of Yankee Stadium. Now the Mets will look to keep the good times going as Jason Vargas gets the start in Baltimore, another homer friendly stadium.

Jason Vargas is 2-8 over 12 games and 47.1 innings with a 8.75 ERA, 6.09 FIP, 1.838 WHIP and 43 ERA+. In his last start, a rain soaked and delayed affair, he was marked on the record with 3 runs and recording 1 out. One of his few good starts this season was against Baltimore where he allowed 2 runs over 5.0 innings. The Orioles have the following numbers against him:

  • Jones 6-33, 2 2B, 2 BB
  • Gentry 5-23, 2 BB
  • Trumbo 4-21, 12 K
  • Davis 3-17, 2 BB
  • Beckham 1-5, 2B
  • Joseph 1-4, HR
  • Villar 1-3

The Mets bats will get a look at Andrew Cashner who played on four teams since 2016 (Padres, Marlins, Rangers and Orioles). He is 3-10 over 22 games and 121.0 innings with a 4.83 ERA, 4.87 FIP, 1.512 WHIP and 87 ERA+. He is coming off a good start where he held the Rays to 1 earned run, 3 total, over 7.0 innings which he needed because in his previous start he allowed 10 runs over 1.2 innings (which raised his season ERA from 4.22 to 5.05). The Mets have the following numbers against him:

  • Frazier 5-13, 5 2B, BB
  • Plawecki 2-8, 2B
  • Bautista 1-3, 2 BB
  • Conforto 1-5, BB
  • Flores 1-6
  • Reyes 2-3
  • Jackson 0-3

Game Preview: Mets @ Yankees

The Mets and Yankees make up a rain out tonight! The Mets are fresh off a series win in Miami where in the rubber game they rode 7.0 innings from Syndergaard and some timely hitting from Conforto and Reyes (thus cementing his position on the 2019 team) into the win column.

The Mets send out Jacob deGrom and I don’t know how Yankee fans should react. Scared because he’s one of the best pitchers in baseball right now? Or content because the Mets rarely score for him? The Mets bucked that trend in deGrom’s last outing scoring 8 runs. On the season he is 6-7 over 23 games and 152.1 innings with a 1.77 ERA (league leading), 2.20 FIP (league leading), 0.965 WHIP and 212 ERA+ (league leading). Since the start of July deGrom has posted a 1.60 ERA in 45.0 innings and has posted a 1.29 ERA in 14.0 innings in August. On June 8th he allowed 3 runs, 2 earned over 8.0 innings against the Yankees, in a game the Yankees won 4-1. The Yankees have the following numbers against deGrom:

  • Stanton 9-25, 2B, 4 HR, 3 BB, 7 K
  • Gardner 4-14, HR, 2 BB
  • Gregorius 2-12, 2 K
  • Hicks 2-8, 2 K
  • Judge 1-5, 2B, 2 BB, 2 K
  • Sanchez 2-6, 3 K
  • Walker 2-6, BB
  • Andujar 0-4
  • Bird 0-3, 2 K
  • Torres 2-4
  • Torreyes 2-3, 2B

Luis Severino takes the mound for the Yankees and he is 15-5 (league leading in wins) over 24 games and 150.1 innings with a 3.11 ERA, 3.02 FIP, 1.104 WHIP and 140 ERA+. The last time the Mets and Yankees met up, this would have been a marquee match up. It still is but under a cloud. Severino has been struggling as of late. Since July 7th over 6 games and 32.0 innings he has posted a 7.31 ERA. It’s an 8.28 ERA over 5 games and 25.0 innings if you forget about his last start on August 8th where he allowed only 2 runs over 7.0 innings. He held the Mets to 2 runs over 5.0 innings back on June 10th. The Mets have the following numbers against Luis:

  • Bautista 2-13, HR, 3 BB, 7 K
  • Frazier 3-6, HR, 2 BB
  • Conforto 0-6, BB, 2 K
  • Jackson 0-3, 2 BB
  • Mesoraco 1-5
  • Rosario 0-5, 2 K
  • Nimmo 2-3, BB
  • Flores 0-2, 2 K
  • Reyes 1-1

The Mets dropped last night’s game in extras and now the Mets find themselves in a rubber game on a Sunday in Miami. Corey Oswalt was serviceable last night, a victim again of defensive miscues as the difference makers and the Mets offense was hot early and then cooled off fast. Syndergaard will look today to heat everything up.

Syndergaard is 7-2 over 15 games with 88.0 innings with a 3.17 ERA, 2.71 FIP, 1.216 WHIP with a 119 ERA+. Syndergaard was human in last start against the Reds allowing 4 runs over 6.1 innings from 6 hits and a walk while striking out 6. Way back in April Noah made a start in Miami where he allowed 2 runs, 1 earned over 6.0 innings from 5 hits and 2 walks. The Marlins have the following numbers against Thor:

  • Dietrich 6-15, 2 2B, 2 K
  • Realmuto 1-8, BB
  • Castro 2-8, 2B
  • Rojas 4-7
  • Prado 1-6
  • Anderson 1-3, 2B
  • Lee 1-3

The Mets bats will get a look at Wei-Yin Chen who is 4-8 over 18 games and 88.2 innings this year with a 5.48 ERA, 4.97 FIP, 1.432 WHIP and 68 ERA+. He had a poor stretch of four games from July 7th-30th where he posted a 6.75 ERA over 21.1 innings. His last start was strong though where he allowed no runs over 5.2 innings. He hasn’t faced the Mets yet this year but last year he faced the Mets in back to back starts. His first one was great for the Marlins allowing 1 run over 6.0 innings from 7 hits and a walk. His second one was great for the mets allowing 6 runs over 3.0 innings from 7 hits. The Mets have the following numbers against Chen:

  • Reyes 4-15, 2B
  • Jackson 1-11, 2 BB
  • Bautista 3-9, HR
  • Flores 3-7, HR

The Mets look to build off last night’s win in Miami tonight behind Corey Oswalt. Last night Wheeler continued his resurgence allowing only 2 runs over 7.0 innings off 4 hits while striking out 8 (both runs coming in his last inning) and Lugo/Smith pitched a clean sheet behind him. The offense responded by scoring 6 runs off 13 hits including a three hit day by Rosario and Jackson and a two hit day by Flores and Frazier.

The Mets will get another look at Corey Oswalt who is 1-2 over 33.1 innings from 7 games and 6 starts recording a 5.13 ERA, 5.40 FIP, 1.050 WHIP and 74 ERA+. He’s coming off an average start against the Braves where he allowed 3 runs over 6.0 innings and since July 4th he has posted a 3.81 ERA over 26.0 innings. His only really bad outing this year, off weird rest, came in Miami on June 29th where he allowed 6 runs over 2.2 innings. The Marlins have the following numbers against him:

  • Anderson 1-2
  • Bour 1-2
  • Castro 1-2
  • Dietrich 0-0, 2 BB
  • Realmuto 1-2
  • Riddle 1-2, HR

The bats will look to continue the hits from yesterday against Dan Straily who is 4-5 over 18 games and 93.0 innings with a 4.35 ERA, 5.45 FIP, 1.387 WHIP and a 86 ERA+. His last time out he allowed 2 runs off 1 hit over 5.1 innings, which was a rebound from his previous start where he allowed 8 runs, 5 earned over 3.1 innings. In April he had a good start against the Mets where he allowed 1 run over 6.0 innings and then at the start of July he allowed 3 runs over 7.0 innings. The Mets have the following numbers against him:

  • Reyes 2-12, 4 BB
  • Bautista 1-13, HR, BB
  • Flores 2-9
  • Nimmo 1-7, HR, 2 BB
  • Conforto 0-4, 2 BB
  • Jackson 0-6, 5 K
  • Mesoraco 0-5
  • Rosario 1-3, 2 BB
  • Frazier 1-2

The Mets open up a series with the Marlins after taking a series with the Reds on Wednesday. After a late, half washed out game on Tuesday night where the Mets lost 6-1, they rebounded on Wednesday when they actually gave Jacob deGrom run support. The Mets won 8-0 behind a dominant deGrom and two players collecting three hits (Austin Jackson and Brandon Nimmo).

Wheeler is on the mound for the Mets tonight. He is 6-6 over 21 starts and 127.1 innings with a 3.89 ERA, 3.42 FIP, 1.249 WHIP and 97 ERA+. In his last two starts he has tossed 13.0 scoreless innings allowing 8 hits and 2 walks while striking out 18. Since June 27th he has posted a 2.17 ERA over 45.2 innings. His first start this season was against the Marlins and it was a good one where he allowed 1 run over 7.0 innings. He then faced them in May allowing 3 runs, 1 earned over 6.0 innings. The Marlins have the following numbers against Zack:

  • Dietrich 3-12, 3B, 2 BB
  • Castro 3-12
  • Prado 3-11
  • Bour 1-7
  • Anderson 1-6, 2B
  • Rojas 2-6, HR
  • Realmuto 2-3

The Mets bats will look to continue what they started on Wednesday against Jose Urena who is 3-11 over 22 games and 123.2 innings with a 4.66 ERA, 4.21 FIP, 1.261 WHIP and 80 ERA+. He is coming off of his worst start of the season where he allowed 6 runs over 5.0 innings from 8 hits and 2 walks against the Phillies and overall in his last four games has posted an ERA of 7.58. He faced the Mets way back in April where he allowed 3 runs over 5.0 innings. The Mets have the following numbers against him:

  • Reyes 6-18, 2B, 3B
  • Conforto 4-11, 2B
  • Flores 1-7, HR
  • Evans 1-3
  • Nimmo 1-3, HR
  • Frazier 0-1, BB
  • Rosario 1-2, 2B

Game Preview: Reds vs Mets

Last night was a weird one for the Mets. The game started and it almost immediately started to pour but not before Jason Vargas could get himself into trouble and by the time his line was closed after the delay three of his runners scored. The Mets offense was cold and the only bright spots for the Mets happened in the bullpen with Bashlor having 2 innings of no run baseball and Drew Smith doing the same. Also Nimmo went 2-3 with a walk.

But it’s deGrom day. An early deGrom day. Jacob is 5-7 over 22 games and 146.1 innings with a 1.85 ERA (league leading), 2.28 FIP (league leading), 0.970 WHIP and a 204 ERA+ (league leading) He’s coming off a start against Atlanta where he had to do it all, holding the Braves to 2 runs in 8 innings and pushing the Mets only run of the game across the plate. Last year against the Reds he allowed 4 runs, 3 earned over 6.0 innings and then 2 runs over 6.0 winnings while striking out 10. The Reds have the following numbers against him:

  • Gennett 5-16, 2 2B, HR, BB, 4 K
  • Votto 1-8, BB
  • Suarez 3-7
  • Tucker 0-6
  • Peraza 2-6
  • Schebler 1-4
  • Hamilton 1-4
  • Barnhart 0-1
  • Casali 0-2

The Mets will get to look at the 2018 debut of Robert Stephenson. Last year went 5-6 over 25 games and 11 starts logging 84.1 innings with a 4.68 ERA, 4.92 FIP, 1.583 WHIP and 94 ERA+. He has put up his best season in the minors this year though, posting a 2.87 ERA across 113.0 innings in 20 starts. Against the Mets last year he allowed 2 runs over 6.0 innings off 5 hits and 3 walks. The Mets have the following numbers against him:

  • Conforto 0-2, BB
  • Flores 3-3, 2B
  • Nimmo 1-3
  • Reyes 1-2, 2B
  • Rosario 0-3
  • Bautista 2-2, 2B

Game Preview: Reds vs Mets

The Mets look to make it two in a row tonight against the Reds! If you forget about the 7th inning last night, the Mets looked great building 6 runs mostly from hit after hit after and then later two solo shots from Plawecki and McNeil. Syndergaard shut the Reds down for 6 innings allowing no runs but the wheels came off in the 7th as he allowed a run and left with the bases loaded (and all of those runners eventually scored) but the Mets didn’t lose the game completely and now look to Vargas to keep it going.

Jason Vargas is 2-7 over 11 games and 47.0 innings with a 8.23 ERA, 6.16 FIP, 1.787 WHIP and 46 ERA+. His first start back from the DL was bad but wasn’t 2018 bad for Vargas as he allowed 4 runs over 5.0 innings against the Braves and tied a season high for strikeouts at 7. He actually lowered his ERA with that outing. In May he allowed 4 runs over 4.0 innings from 6 hits and 2 walks. The Reds have the following numbers against Vargas:

  • Suarez 3-6, 2B
  • Peraza 1-3
  • Barnhart 2-2, 3B
  • Castillo 0-2
  • Gennett 0-2
  • Hamilton 0-2
  • Votto 0-0, BB, HBP

The Mets will send Sal Romano out to the mound tonight. He is 6-9 over 23 games and 21 starts over 116.0 innings with a 5.12 ERA, 5.24 FIP, 1.422 WHIP, 81 ERA+. He’s coming off a rough start in Detroit where he allowed 4 runs over 5.1 innings off 8 hits. Earlier this season he allowed only 1 run against the Mets in 6.0 innings. The Mets have the following numbers against Sal:

  • Nimmo 2-8, 3B
  • Rosario 2-7
  • Flores 0-6, 2 K
  • Bruce 0-3
  • Mesoraco 0-3
  • Conforto 1-2, 2B
  • Jackson 0-1, BB

Game Preview: Reds vs Mets

The Mets will look to bounce back from dropping three games of four against the Braves this weekend, yesterday being a frustrating day. It was the second start this season where Corey Oswalt made one mistake that ruins the day for him, and otherwise he was great. I hope the Mets try to roll the dice with him again, but if Reyes is a model (and Bruce, and Bautista), the Mets will probably go with Vargas. Matt Harvey returns to Queens today as well! He doesn’t line up to pitch against the Mets but at least we can stare at him in the dugout. Romantic.

Noah Syndergaard goes for the Amazin’s today. He is 6-2 over 14 games and 81.2 innings with a 2.98 ERA, 2.72 FIP, 1.224 WHIP and 127 ERA+. In his first start back from hand, foot and mouth disease he allowed 3 runs over 7.0 innings and in three starts since returning in July he has posted a 2.65 ERA over 17.0 innings. The Reds have the following numbers against him:

  • Suarez 4-12
  • Votto 0-11, BB, 5 K
  • Hamilton 1-6
  • Barnhart 0-5
  • Gennett 1-5

The Mets bats draw Homer Bailey who is 1-8 over 14 games and 76.2 innings with a 5.87 ERA, 5.62 FIP, 1.513 WHIP, and a 71 ERA+. He has been much better since he returned in July allowing 4 runs over 14.2 innings lowering his ERA from 6.68 to 5.87. Against the Mets in May he allowed 6 runs over 4.0 innings from 8 hits and a walk. The Mets have the following numbers against Homer:

  • Reyes 2-10, 2B, BB
  • Nimmo 1-5, BB
  • Plawecki 2-6, 2B, HR
  • Frazier 1-4
  • Jackson 1-4, HR
  • Conforto 1-3, HR

Game Preview: Braves vs Mets

The Mets look for the series split today as they take on the Braves this afternoon in Queens. After dropping the first two games of the series, everything went right in Flushing last night for the Mets. Zack Wheeler was fantastic, shutting out the Braves over 7.0 innings and the bullpen kept that true behind him including a quick ninth inning by Gsellman featuring three ground outs that all went to McNeil. Speaking of McNeil, the second basemen who should be playing every day went 4-4 with a double last night.

Corey Oswalt returns for what seems like his bi-weekly cross country flight to the Mets. On the season he is 1-2 over 6 games and 5 starts with a 5.27 ERA, 5.26 FIP, 0.988 WHIP and 73 ERA+. Like always when Oswalt pitches, its worth noting he has done better for the Mets when he is pitching on regular rest and that doesn’t often happen for him. His WHIP is the sign of his potential, being supported by games like a July 9th outing against the Phillies where the only hit he allowed was a bases clearing double to a pitcher that brought in 3 runs. In his last two starts as a Met he has allowed 3 runs over 10.0 innings from 5 hits and 2 walks.

Julio Teheran is 8-7 over 115.0 innings and 21 starts this season with a 4.46 ERA, 5.34 FIP, 1.261 WHIP and 87 ERA+. He had two great back to back starts in July where he allowed 1 earned run over 13.0 innings. He’s followed that up with back to back starts allowing 12 runs, 10 earned over 9.1 innings all to the Marlins. So far against the Mets this year he has been lights out allowing 2 runs over 21.0 innings in three different starts. The Mets have the following numbers against him:

  • Reyes 6-29, 2 2B, 2 BB
  • Flores 3-21, HR, 3 BB
  • Conforto 4-17, HR, BB
  • Frazier 3-17, 2B, HR
  • Bautista 1-10, 2B
  • Plawecki 0-11
  • Rosario 1-9, 3B
  • Nimmo 1-4, 3 BB
  • Mesoraco 0-4, BB

Game Preview: Braves vs Mets

The Mets look to bounce back after last night’s typical deGrom start where deGrom went 8.0 innings, allowed only two runs and the only run the Mets scored was the one that deGrom pushed across the plate himself. Poor Jacob, we don’t deserve him. Anyway the Mets will see Kevin Gausman make his Braves debut tonight as we send out the not-traded Zack Wheeler for the first time after the deadline.

Zack Wheeler is 5-6 over 120.1 innings in 20 starts posting a 4.11 ERA, 3.58 FIP, 1.288 WHIP, and a 93 ERA+. His last start was great as he allowed no runs over 6.0 innings and now in his last two starts he has allowed 2 runs over 13.0 innings. His only start against Atlanta this year was pretty bad as he allowed 6 runs over 5.2 innings and was probably his last bad start (he’s posted a 2.96 ERA over 51.2 innings and 8 games since then). The Braves have the following numbers against him:

  • Freeman 8-16, 2 2B, 2 HR, 10 BB (.667 OBP)
  • Flowers 2-4, HR
  • Albies 0-3
  • Inciarte 2-3
  • Makakis 2-3
  • Swanson 1-3, 2B

For the Orioles this year Gausman pitched 124.0 innings over 21 games with a 4.43 ERA, 4.59 FIP, 1.379 WHIP and 94 ERA+. His last start against the Rays was a positive bounce back allowing 2 runs over 7.0 innings. In his two starts before that he allowed 10 runs over 9.2 innings from 15 hits and 4 walks. The following Mets have seen Gausman in action:

  • Bautista 6-26, 2B, HR, 3 BB
  • Jackson 2-10, 2 2B
  • Reyes 4-10, 2B
  • Frazier 0-5
  • Conforto 0-3
  • Flores 1-2
