The Mets left DC in frustration. Heading into the 9th, they were down 7-4, all of their scoring coming in one inning. If Wheeler pitched better early on, maybe the game is tied at this point. But in the 9th they got a couple of hits and some more hits and very quickly the Mets trailed 7-6 with the bases loaded. Then Keon Broxton struck out to end the game. And at some point that’s what the entire season has felt like. The Mets on the cusp of being good but falling short due to failures to deviate from the personnel brought in.

So the Mets go to Miami tonight, two games below .500, in an attempt to end the weekend above .500. Carlos Gomez who has been on fire in Syracuse will be joining the team as Jeff McNeil was taking out of yesterday’s game with abdominal soreness and Michael Conforto left with a concussion.

In positive news, it’s deGrom day! Jacob is 3-4 over 8 games and 47.0 innings with a 3.26 ERA, 3.12 FIP, 1.106 WHIP and 119 ERA+. In the month of May, deGrom has started three games, going 7.0 innings each for a total of 21.0 innings allowing 3 run while striking out 21 posting an ERA of 1.29 and an opponents batting average of .162. He has pitched 14.0 innings against the Marlisn this year allowing 1 run on 8 hits and 2 walks while striking out 22. The Marlins have the following numbers against him:

The Mets bats will try to mount a consistent attack against Trevor Richards who is 0-5 over 8 games and 42.1 innings with a 4.46 ERA, 5.20 FIP, 1.370 WHIP, and 87 ERA+. He’s coming off a rough start where he allowed 4 runs over 5.0 innings which was preceded by his best start of the season where he allowed no runs over 4.1 innings. His second start of the year was against the Mets and he allowed 3 runs over 6.0 innings from 5 hits and 3 walks. The Mets have the following numbers against him:

The Mets and Nationals close out their three game series this afternoon with a rubber game! After taking the opener on Tuesday, the Mets fell behind yesterday early and could not catch back up as their bats fell silent. On the positive side, the bullpen did a great job tossing scoreless innings in what has been a weak area for the Mets this season.

Wheeler looks to lead the Mets back to .500. He is 3-2 on the season over 8 games and 49.2 innings with a 4.35 ERA, 2.70 FIP (a career best), 1.349 WHIP and 89 ERA+. In the month of May he has allowed 4 runs off 15 hits in 14.0 innings while striking out 21 batters. His first two starts were against the Nationals and they were the worst of the season as he allowed 11 runs over 9.2 innings. In fact, if you take out those two starts, he has a 2.93 ERA on the year. The Nationals have the following numbers against Wheeler:

The Mets bats will try to leave to DC on a high note against Anibal Sanchez who is 0-6 over 8 starts and 41.0 innings with a 5.27 ERA, 4.86 FIP, 1.683 WHIP and 84 ERA+. In the month of May he has thrown 9.0 innings over two starts allowing 5 runs, 3 earned. The last time he has pitched into the 6th inning was on April 19th. He pitched against the Mets twice last year allowing 5 runs over 10.0 innings from 7 hits and 4 walks. The Mets have the following numbers against him:

The Mets are on a 3-game winning streak and are back to .500! Last night took the lead early on a first inning grand slam by Wilson Ramos, who really needed something positive to happen on the baseball diamond. Then Syndergaard took over. He no-hit the Nationals through 5 innings and would leave after 8 innings allowing 2 runs. Dominic Smith provided the icing on the cake with a solo shot to dead center and Lugo had to pitch only one inning!

Now the Mets turn to Wilmer Font for a second start. The Mets bullpen has now had effectively three days off (with the exception of Lugo who pitched yesterday and Diaz who warmed up). While I would have preferred anyone else to pitch the 9th yesterday to allow Lugo to pitch possibly more than one inning today, that isn’t what happened. The condition of the bullpen is important because most likely Font will pitch somewhere between 4 and 5 innings. In his first start as a Met he allowed 2 runs over 4.0 innings from 3 hits and no walks. The Nationals have the following numbers against him:

Patrick Corbin has been good overall for the Nationals this year. He is 3-1 over 8 starts and 50.2 innings with a 3.20 ERA, 3.48 FIP, 1.105 WHIP and 139 ERA+. He went through a rough patch at the end of April, beginning of May where he allowed 12 runs, 11 earned, over 17.0 innings, a 5.82 ERA, but in his last start he rebounded by shutting out the Dodgers over 7.0 innings. Against the Mets this year he has allowed 5 runs over 12.0 innings in his first two starts of the season. The Mets have the following numbers against him:

The Mets are fresh off a rare double day off and we’ll see tonight how that impacts their play as they open a series in Washington. When we last checked in, the Mets were only 1 game below .500 thanks to back to back wins against the Marlins and were hoping Thor would lead them to victory against the Marlins ace Caleb Smith, but the skies over 95 opened up all day washing the Marlins away instead.

So the Mets will try to reach .500 tonight against a struggling Nationals team. For the Mets, they need this series to get back into relevance. For the Nationals, a series loss could propel them too deep for comfort into a losing season as they enter 16-24.

Noah Syndergaard is 2-3 over 8 games and 49.0 innings with a 5.14 ERA, 3.55 FIP, 1.327 WHIP and 75 ERA+. He started May off with an immaculate game, pitching a complete game shutout and hitting a solo homer for the game’s only run and he followed it up with a bad performance in San Diego allowing 5 runs, 4 earned over 6.0 innings from 9 hits and a walk.  His first two starts of the season were against the Nationals first allowing 4 runs over 6.0 innings from 7 hits and then allowing 2 runs over 6.0 innings from 1 hit and 2 walks. The Nationals have the following numbers against him:

The Mets will get a look at Jeremy Hellickson who is 2-1 over 7 games and 6 starts pitching 31.0 innings with a 5.52 ERA, 5.63 FIP, 1.613 WHIP and 80 ERA+. He has better-ish in May, allowing 8 runs, only 5 earned over 9.1 innings in two starts leading to a 4.82 ERA, but opponents are still hitting .275 against him. Last year he was good against the Mets holding them to 3 runs and 9 hits over 10.2 innings, a 2.53 ERA. The Mets have the following numbers against Jeremy:

Second straight win in a row! The Mets beat the Marlins again last night, this time thanks to great pitching from Jacob deGrom and timely hitting from Alonso and Conforto. Jacob put together his third straight performance of going 7.0 innings allowing two runs or less and now it’s Noah Syndergaard’s turn to get back into form.

Last year he was 3-0 over as many games against the Marlins including a complete game shutout allowing a total of 5 runs, 4 earned in 22.0 innings (1.64 ERA). The Marlins have the following numbers against him:

  • Starlin Castro 3-12, 2B, BB, 3 K
  • Miguel Rojas 4-11, 2 K
  • Martin Prado 2-8, BB, 3 K
  • Brian Anderson 2-7, 2B
  • Magneuris Sierra 1-6, 2B
  • JT Riddle 1-5, K
  • Neil Walker 0-5, 2 K

The Mets bats have to deal with by far the best pitcher in the Marlins rotation right now, Caleb Smith. Smith is 3-0 over 7 games and 42.2 innings with a 2.11 ERA, 2.84 FIP, 0.891 WHIP and 183 ERA+. His numbers are even better if you chop off his first two starts, posting a 1.42 ERA in his last 5 games and 31.2 innings. He’s only recorded outs in the 7th inning twice this year those have both been his last two starts. His first start of the year was against the Mets who scored two runs over 5.0 innings and then beat up the bullpen later to win that game. The Mets have the following numbers on Smith:

  • Michael Conforto 3-8, 4 K
  • Amed Rosario 1-7, 2B, 3 K
  • Robinscon Cano 1-4, K
  • Juan Lagares 0-4, 2 K
  • Pete Alonso 0-3, 2 K
  • Brandon Nimmo 0-3, 2 K
  • JD Davis 1-2, 2B
  • Jeff McNeil 1-1, 2B, BB

Oh boy did the Mets need that win last night! The bats of the New York Mets have been in a slumber for about two weeks now, and those two weeks have felt like two centuries. After a horrid road trip for hitting, the Mets scored 8 runs in the bottom of the first including a grand slam from Amed Rosario.

Now the Mets look to keep the good times going with Jacob deGrom on the mound. He is 2-4 over 7 starts and 40.0 innings with a 3.60 ERA, 3.47 FIP, 1.150 WHIP and 110 ERA+. In the month of May he has tossed 14.0 innings, allowing only 2 runs off 7 hits and 3 walks while striking out 13. His second start of the season was against the Marlins where he allowed 3 hits and a walk, but no runs, over 7.0 innings while striking out an astonishing 14 batters. The Marlins have the following numbers against him:

The Mets bats will get their first 2019 look at Sandy Alcantara who is 1-3 over 7 games and 38.1 innings this year with a 4.93 ERA, 4.71 FIP, 1.617 WHIP and 79 ERA+. In his last two starts he has allowed 9 runs, 7 earned over 10.1 innings from 11 hits and 9 walks. In three games against the Mets last year though he held the Mets to only 4 runs over 19.0 innings despite allowing 9 hits and 10 walks. The Mets have the following numbers on Sandy:

The Mets return to Queens tonight after a rough road trip that didn’t see a lot of winning baseball, saw a lot of errors and only a few moments of relief that the team is going to put it all together. The road trip has left the Mets 3 games under .500 but they get just what they need tonight, a three game set with the Marlins!

Zack Wheeler is 2-2 over 7 games and 42.2 innings with a 4.64 ERA, 3.11 FIP, 1.336 WHIP and 84 ERA+. His FIP is now lower than any other season. He is coming off a strong start allowing only 2 runs over 7.0 innings to the Brewers, which was his 2nd strong start in his last 3, or his 3rd in his last 5. Since starting the season with back to back starts that left him with a 10.24 ERA, he has a 3.00 over his 5 games and 33.0 innings. He was very good against the Marlins last year going 3-1 in as many starts posting a 1.29 ERA over 28.0 innings striking out 31. The Marlins have the following numbers against him:

The Mets draw the young starter Pablo Lopez tonight who is 2-4 over 7 starts and 38.0 innings with a 4.03 ERA, 2.79 FIP, 1.079 WHIP and 97 ERA+. Similar to Wheeler, he is also coming off a strong start, holding the Braves scoreless over 6.0 innings, which was his 2nd strong start in his last three. Pablo started against the Mets last year holding the Amazin’s to 2 runs over 6.0 innings from 6 hits and a walk. The Mets have the following numbers against him:

The Mets evened the series at 1 game a piece thanks to Pete Alonso late last night. Thor wasn’t as dominant as he was last week, and a throwing error from Rosario didn’t help but finally the Mets bats woke up to keep the team in the game. In the top of the 9th, Alonso hit a 449-ft homer to push the go-ahead run across the plate.

The Mets are going to need a lot more of that this afternoon as they try their first bullpen game of the season. Steven Matz is out and the hope is that he only misses one turn in the rotation. Rather than dipping into Syracuse for Hector Santiago, the Mets acquired Wilmer Font from the Rays who should be able to toss 70 pitches today. After that, bullpen! Wilmer Font is 1-0 over 10 games and 14.0 innings this year with a 5.79 ERA, 3.50 FIP, 1.429 WHIP and 76 ERA+. In his career (37 games and 65.0 innings between 2012 and now, with a gap between 2014-2016 where he didn’t play at all in the bigs) he has a 6.51 ERA, 6.04 FIP, 1.538 WHIP and 66 ERA+.

The Mets draw Matt Stahm today, who is 1-2 over 6 starts and 32.2 innings with a 3.03 ERA, 3.33 FIP, 1.102 WHIP and 137 ERA+ in his first year as a starter. His first start against the Braves was his worst, allowing 5 runs in 2.2 innings. Since then he has allowed 7 run, 6 earned over 30.0 innings,a 1.80 ERA. He tossed one inning in relief against the Mets last year walking 1 and striking out 1. The Mets have the following numbers against him:

Game Preview: Mets @ Padres

The Mets fell to 4 games below .500 last night as the offense continued their slumber. At least for deGrom yesterday the bats sleeping through his good work was nothing new as it was the defining characteristic of the Mets hitting ability during his starts last year. Jacob tossed his second strong start in a row, holding the Padres to 2 runs over 7.0 innings, but the Mets bats could only get 4 hits, and one of them was from Jacob himself.

When the Mets needed to win a game when the offense was missing, they turned to the God of Thunder, who threw a complete game and hit a solo homer, the only run of the game game. Noah Syndergaard was a one man baseball team last week and the Mets may need him to do that again tonight. He is 2-3 over 7 games and 43.0 innings this year with a 5.02 ERA (fell from 6.35 in one start), 3.22 FIP, 1.279 WHIP and a 78 ERA+. The last time he has faced the Padres was back in 2016 where he allowed 2 runs over 6.0 innings from 6 hits and 2 walks. The Padres have the following numbers against him:

For a second straight game the Mets will face a pitcher who made his pitching debut in 2019. Today the Mets get Cal Quantrill, making his second big league start. In his first game he allowed 2 runs over 5.2 innings from 6 hits and a walk. Before getting called up this year, he pitched 5 games in the minors going 25.0 innings with a 4.68 ERA, 1.360 WHIP.

Game Preview: Mets @ Padres

The Mets got swept yesterday and look to find their footing tonight against the Padres. Now two games under .500 and facing injury woes for two starting pitchers (Matz and Vargas), the Mets need some good news.

And hopefully, Jacob deGrom can provide it! Jacob is 2-3 over 6 games and 33.0 innings with a 3.82 ERA, 3.50 FIP, 1.242 WHIP and 102 ERA+. After allowing 14 runs over 13.0 innings in three starts, last time out he returned to his dominant self holding the Reds scoreless over 7.0 innings. He was great against the Padres last year, holding them to 3 runs, 2 earned over 15.1 innings (1.17 ERA) while striking out 18. The Padres have the following numbers against deGrom:

The Mets bats draw the rookie pitcher tonight who is off to an amazing start to his major league career. This is bad news for a team whose bats have hit quite the slumber over the last week and seem unable to wake up. Chris Paddack is 2-1 over 6 starts and 33.0 innings with a 1.91 ERA, 2.71 FIP, 0.697 WHIP (league leading) and 216 ERA+. His 3.8 H/9 is the best in the league as well. He’s been a tick more human in his last three starts, allowing 5 runs over 19.0 innings leading to a 2.37 ERA but opponents are still batting only .123 against him.
