Game Preview: Nationals vs Mets

The start of May was a good one for the Amazin’s as Matt Harvey lead the team to a 4-0 win over the Nationals and ending the current Mets slide. The game also featured the 2015 debut of Dilson Herrera, an amazing catch by Juan Lagares and the Mets bats capitalizing on misplayed ball by the Nationals.

Jon Niese is on the bump tonight.  So far he is 2-1 over 4 starts with a 2.74 ERA over 23.0 innings. His first three starts of the year he allowed exactly 1 ER but he was also hit hard in each of those starts catching a lot of the plate. This came to a head in his last start on Sunday Night where he allowed 6 runs, 4 earned over 5.0 against the Yankees. Last year was not a good year for him against the Nationals going 0-3 over three games and 17.0 innings with a 5.82 ERA. The Nationals have the following numbers against him:

  • Uggla 10-33, 3 2B, 3B
  • Werth 9-28, 2B
  • Desmond 5-24, 2 2B
  • Espinosa 7-18, 2B, HR
  • Zimmerman 7-17, 2B
  • Ramos 4-11, HR

The Mets bats will have to work through Gio Gonzalez who is off to a rough start to 2015 posting a 5.01 ERA over 4 starts and a 1-2 record. After allowing 7 ER through the first two games, 12.1 innings of the season, he threw a good start against the Cards allowing no runs over 6.0 innings (but still allowing 8 hits and 4 walks). In his last start against Miami he allowed 6 ER over 5.0 innings. He was fairly average against the Mets last year going 2-3 over 5 starts posting a 4.08 ERA over 28.2 innings. The Mets bats have the following numbers on Gio:

  • Granderson 3-24, 2B, HR
  • Mayberry 4-19, 2 HR
  • Cuddyer 6-14, 2B, HR
  • Murphy 6-17, 3B
  • Tejada 4-15
  • Suda 2-14
  • Lagares 6-16, 2 2B, 3B, HR
  • Flores 0-10
