Yesterday stunk. Can we do it over?

The Mets lost two games against the Pirates yesterday by the same score, 3-1. The Mets bats are no where to be found, and even though the Mets have allowed only 7 runs in the last three games, they now have lost three consecutive starts.

Luckily, here comes Noah Syndergaard, the stopper. Noah is 6-2 over 12 games and 11 starts with 70.2 innings with a 1.91 ERA while striking out 90 batters. In his last 7 games, 6 starts, he’s pitched 38.1 innings with 46 K’s while recording an 1.41 ERA. He faced the Pirates once last year picking up the loss allowing 4 runs, only one earned run while pitching 6.0 innings. The Bucs have the following numbers against Thor:

• Jaso 1-2, 2B

The Mets bats will get to see the major league debut of Jameson Taillon. Jameson is currently rehabing from Tommy John back in 2014, which side tracked his development. He’s 4-2 over 10 games and 61.2 inning with a 2.04 ERA. In his last full season, 2013 (no games in 2014, 2015) he was 5-10 over 147.1 innings with a 3.73 ERA. The Mets handled this road well recently when they had to face the phenom on the Dodgers’ staff.

(You are probably reading this during Game 1, this was written before Game 1 started. I hope it was good. I also hope the Pirates didn’t change their mind about their starter, leaving this article void).

The Mets and Pirates are set to play the second game of today’s double header featuring Jacob deGrom and Juan Nicasio. I know its early to mention this, but this poses an interesting situation for the Mets this weekend. Do they start a starter on short rest? Does Logan Verrett get the spot start (my leading theory at this point/most conventional strategy)? Do they bump someone from the rotation to make up for it? Give players an extra day even though there’s an off day Monday? Go with two starters again this weekend in the same game and then use the off-day to reset? (Probably not).

Jacob deGrom is 3-1 over 9 starts and 55.0 innings this year with a 2.62 ERA while striking out 47 batters. In his last two starts he has tossed 14.0 innings allowing 2 ER, 5 walks while striking out 16 batters. It has been a minute since deGrom has faced the Bucs. He pitched two games, both no-decisions and tossed 13.1 innings of 1.35 ERA ball against the Pirates in 2014. The Pirates have the following numbers against Jacob:

Juan Nicasio is 4-4 over 10 starts and 53.0 innings with a 4.75 ERA in his first season with the Pirates. The long time Rockie (Rocky?) spent last year the Dodgers. Since the start of May he has pitched 5 games and 26.0 innings with an ERA of 6.23. He pitched against the Mets three times last year in relief totaling 3.1 innings and 4 runs. Generally on double header days, I post both at games at the same time. As of 5:25 AM, the Pirates have yet to officially announce their starter for game 2. Anyway, the first game will be a rematch of the game that was supposed to happen last night.

The Mets look to bounce back from Sunday’s 1-0 loss against Jon Niese this afternoon. But before we get to the familiar foe, lets take a look at our starter, Steven Matz. Matz is 7-1 over 9 games and a 2.60 ERA over 55.1 innings this season. His last outing isn’t as bad as it looks, where he allowed 3 ER over 5.2 innings. He was smooth sailing through 5 and then things fell apart in the 6th (and then really fell apart for the Mets in the 8th). This will be his first time facing the Pirates in his major league career and no one on the Pirates roster has faced him.

The Mets finally get a chance to strike against Jon Niese. He’s 5-2 this season over 11 starts and 64.0 innings with a 4.36 ERA. Things are better for Niese of late, in his last four starts he has pitched 24.0 innings with a 2.25 ERA and a 2-0 record. (So at least in his perspective, he has the Mets right where he wants them) This will be his first time facing the Mets, since he is a homegrown Met. A few Mets have seen Niese though:

The Mets took the most difficult path possible to bring themselves to a sweep opportunity today. Yesterday they lost Cespedes, Lagares and Cabrera, at various points in the game, to injury. Despite all that, and stranding tons of runners on base paths, the Mets had a comeback win, and possibly a signature win, thanks to Loney, Reynolds, De Aza and others. This afternoon’s game is also the most anticipated of the series as Matt Harvey takes on Jose Fernandez.

The Dark Knight rose in his last start. On the season, Matt is 4-7 over 11 games and 60.1 innings with a 5.37 ERA. In his last start, his best of the season, he tossed 7.0 innings of 2 hit ball while walking 1 and striking out 6. Harvey was 2-1 against the Marlins last year in as many starts totaling 21.0 innings with a 3.43 ERA. The Marlins have the following numbers against Matt:

Earlier this year he pitched against the Mets going 5.0 innings, 1 ER while walking 3 and striking out 5. The Mets have the following numbers against Jose:

The Mets needed that one last night. After losing a couple of games in a row, and losing David Wright officially for extended period of time, the joy was starting to escape Metsville. Luckily, Syndergaard was there to get it back for the start of a series with the Marlins. Between his strong pitching and Cabrera’s + Loney’s bat, the Mets were able to take the opener. Today the look for the series behind Big Sexy as he faces Justin Nicolino.

Bartolo is 4-3 over 11 games, 10 starts and 61.0 innings with a 3.39 ERA. He was solid his last time out allowing 2 ER over 6.0 innings of work and combined in his last two starts he has allowed 3 ER over 13.0. This will be his first start this year against the fish, a team he faced 6 times last year going 4-2 over 43.1 innings with a 2.49 ERA. The Marlins have the following numbers against Colon:

The Mets head down to Miami to try to forget the last couple of games. After beating the White Sox in the series opener, the Mets dropped two games they really could have won. Now it’s serious again as the Mets take on a division rival in the Marlins. Noah Syndergaard gets the start today. He’s 5-2 over 11 games, 10 starts and 63.2 innings while striking out 81 batters and posting an ERA of 1.84. His last two outings have been a little, interesting. On May 28th he pitched 2.1 innings while allowing 2 hits and striking out 3 before getting tossed for throwing behind Utley. Then he came out of relief to get some more work in on the 31st tossing a clean inning with 2 K’s. Since the 6th he’s pitched 31.1 innings with 37 K’s with a 1.15 ERA. His second start of the season was against the Marlins where he allowed 1 ER over 7.0 innings of work with 12 K’s. The Marlins have the following numbers against Noah:

Tom Koehler is 3-5 over 10 starts and 54.0 innings with a 4.50 ERA. The Mets and White Sox find themselves playing the rubber game this afternoon. The Mets were cruising for most of the night last night until the 6th inning. Matz, who was dicing the lineup up until that point, allowed 3 runs and didn’t make it out of the inning. Syndergaard then pitched a solid inning, and then Robles blew the game and the Mets bats couldn’t get it back.

Jacob deGrom will try to put everything back together today. Jacob is 3-1 over 8 starts and 48.0 innings with a 2.81 ERA while recording 37 K’s. After several starts in a row of average to below average starts, deGrom rebounded with a strong outing his last time out going 7.0 innings holding the Dodgers to 1 ER while striking out 7. Jacob has never faced the White Sox before but has faced a couple of batters on other teams:

Miguel Gonzalez is in the midst of his first season with the White Sox after four with the Orioles. Gonzalez is 0-1 over 5 starts and 28.0 innings with a 4.50 ERA. In his last three starts he is 0-1 over 17.0 innings striking out 14 with a 4.24 ERA. Miguel has never faced the Mets before but has faced several players while they were on other teams:

Yesterday the Mets beat the White Sox 1-0 thanks to the first strong, strong Harvey start of the season. The world is a beautiful place again. See you next Harvey Day! In the mean time, we get to see Steven Matz today, who has been ok. He’s 7-1 on the season over as many starts with a 2.36 ERA and 49.2 innings with 50 K’s. In his last 7 starts he is 7-0 over 48.0 innings and 49 K’s with a 1.13 ERA. He’s been ok. His last outing was the 4th time this season he held his opponent scoreless. This will be his first start against the Chicago White Sox and has faced two members of the White Sox while they were on other teams:

Mat Latos is 6-1 this season, his first with Chicago, over 9 starts and 51.0 innings with a 4.06 ERA. His last start was his first quality start since April 24th (and just barely, as he allowed 3 ER over 6.0 innings). In his first four starts of the season he pitched 24.1 innings with a 0.74 ERA. Since then he has pitched 26.2 innings over 5 starts with a 7.09 ERA. Last year he was 0-1 against the Mets in 2 games and 10.0 innings allowing 5 ER and 11 hits. The Mets try to get back on track as the White Sox come to town for the early game. Yesterday the Mets were able to claw their way back in the 8th inning to tie the game at 2 vs the Dodgers, but Familia was flustered in the ninth and the Mets eventually lost 4-2. The big story for today is, will Matt Harvey be Harvey? The word on the street is the Mets staff found a mechanical issue in his extended bullpen session and worked on it. Also, will the extended session impact him? The numbers on the season are bleak this season at 3-7 over 10 starts and 53.1 innings with a 6.08 ERA over 44 K’s. Its been a while since he faced the White Sox. In 2013 he pitched a one hitter, complete game shutout with 12 K’s against them. The White Sox have the following numbers against Harvey:

• Rollins 5-22, 2 2B, 2 HR
• Frazier 2-9
• Jackson 1-4
• Cabrera 1-3

The Mets draw Jose Quintana today who is 5-4 with a 2.22 ERA over 10 starts and 65.0 innings of work on the season. He’s been more human in his last two starts going 0-2 over 12.1 innings with 7 ER and 13 K’s. He’s never faced the Mets before but he has faced a few Mets batters while they were members of other teams:
