Game Preview: Padres vs Mets

The Mets try to stop a three game slide and will try to avoid being swept tonight as they take on the Padres for ESPN Sunday night baseball.

The Mets offense is mired in a team wide slump. Despite collecting eight hits and three walks last night, the Mets could only push one run across the plate. The Mets pitching has been excellent – hopefully the bats will come around.

The Mets bats will have probably their toughest assignment of the series this evening as they take on Joe Musgrove. Over 16 starts and 104 innings pitched, Musgrove has a 2.42 ERA, 3.09 FIP, 0.971 WHIP and a 157 ERA+. Musgrove has hit a few bumps in his last couple of starts. Last time out he allowed five runs from nine hits in five innings against the Rockies. Back on June 23rd he allowed six runs from from seven hits against the Phillies. (Between those two starts he allowed three runs over 14 innings). He also allowed five homers between June 16th and June 30th (and only four homers across all other starts). The Mets have the following numbers against Musgrove:

  • Francisco Lindor 5-14, 2 2B, 2 HR, BB, 6 K
  • Daniel Vogelbach 0-7, BB, 4 K
  • Eduardo Escobar 2-8, HR, 2 K
  • Starling Marte 2-6
  • Jeff McNeil 1-5, 2B, K
  • Pete Alonso 2-6, 2 K
  • Luis Guillorme 2-5, K
  • Michael Perez 0-4, BB, 2 K
  • Travis Jankowski 1-3, BB
  • Brandon Nimmo 0-3

Carlos Carrasco will make his first start of the second half this evening. Over his first 18 starts and 99 innings he has a 4.27 ERA, 3.51 FIP, 1.333 WHIP and a 93 ERA+. Over his last three starts he has allowed only three runs over 17 1/3 innings from 18 hits and five walks while striking out 19 batters. This translates into a 1.56 ERA and 2.54 FIP.

Against the Padres earlier this season Carrasco allowed only two runs from five hits over seven innings. That was the only start this season where he reached ten strikeouts. The Padres have the following numbers against him:

  • Eric Hosmer 8-34, 2 2B, 3B, 4 BB, 9 K
  • Manny Machado 2-10, 2 BB, 2 K
  • Jorge Alfaro 2-10, 2B, BB, 3 K
  • Nomar Mazara 4-10, 2 2B, 3 K
  • Jurickson Profar 5-8, 2B, HR, BB, K
  • Jake Cronenworth 0-3, 3 K
  • Ha-Seong Kim 1-3, K
  • Luke Voit 0-3, 2 K
  • Trent Grishman 0-2, 2 K

Game Preview: Padres vs Mets

The Mets offense could not get anything going last night as the Mets lost the Opener of the Series to the Padres 4-1.

Right before the game though the Mets made their first big trade, acquiring David Vogelbach from the Pirates. The Mets DH situation this season has been miserable against right handed pitching which is where Vogelbach excels. Blake Snell, pitching for the Padres tonight, is a lefty. Tomorrow night’s starter is a righty though!

Chris Bassitt will make his 18th start of the season tonight. Over his 102 innings in the first half of the season, Bassitt posted a 3.79 ERA, 3.83 FIP, 1.137 WHIP and a 106 ERA+. In his last five starts and 33 2/3 innings he has a 2.41 ERA and 2.94 FIP from 25 hits, nine runs while striking out 30 batters. He is coming off of a big game against the Braves where he held them to one run over six innings in a game the Mets won 7-6.

His start against the Padres this season was pretty terrible, and Bassitt is probably itching for revenge. He allowed seven runs from eight hits and two walks over 3 1/3 innings. The Padres have the following career numbers against Bassitt:

  • Eric Hosmer 2-11, 2B, K
  • Manny Machado 2-9, 2B, 2 K
  • Nomar Masara 2-8, BB, 3 K
  • Jake Cronenworth 2-3, 2B
  • Jurickson Profar 1-2, BB
  • Jorge Alfaro 1-2, K
  • Trent Grisham 0-1, BB
  • Luke Voit 1-2, K

Blake Snell has made ten starts totaling 50 innings this season with a 5.22 ERA, 3.70 FIP, 1.480 WHIP and a 73 ERA+. He started July off strong with back to back starts where he allowed a combined two runs from seven hits over 11 innings while striking out 23 batters. In his last start before the All-Star break he took a step backwards allowing five runs from four hits and six walks over 3 2/3 innings in Colorado.

Snell faced the Mets back on June 6th and allowed five runs, four earned, from seven hits and three walks over four innings. The Mets have the following career numbers against him:

  • Francisco Lindor 3-23, 2B, 4 K
  • Mark Canha 4-10, 2B, 2 BB, 2 K
  • Starling Marte 5-12, 2B, HR, 2 K
  • Pete Alonso 1-7, HR, 3 BB
  • Eduardo Escobar 2-10, 2B, 3 K
  • Brandon Nimmo 2-6, 2B, BB, K
  • Jeff McNeil 2-5, K
  • Travis Jankowski 1-2, K

The Mets will kick-off the second half of the season hosting the Padres in Queens!

The Mets are 23 games above .500 and are in first place ahead of the Atlanta Braves who are starting their second half after a scorching hot month of June. The Phillies have also made a turn recently and they find themselves in the wild card race too. It’s going to be a fun couple of months!

The Padres are currently 10 games over .500 and are holding a wild card spot. They are 4-6 over their last 10 games. They took two of three from the Mets back when the two teams matched up in June.

Max Scherzer will kick things off for the Mets today. Over 11 starts and 69 innings this season, Scherzer has a 2.22 ERA, 2.37 FIP, 0.884 WHIP and a 181 ERA+. Since returning from the injured list, Scherzer has made three starts totaling 19 1/3 innings with a 1.40 ERA and 0.89 FIP. • Jorge Alfaro 4-23, HR, 12 K
  • Trent Grisham 2-14, 2B, BB, 4 K
  • Jake Cronenworth 0-10, BB, 3 K

Yu Darvish made 17 starts and tossed 108 1/3 innings during the first half of the season. He posted a 3.41 ERA, 3.45 FIP, 0.988 WHIP, and a 112 ERA+. In his last four games he has pitched 26 innings allowing 12 runs (3.69 ERA) from 23 hits and five walks while striking out 34. He has been more susceptible to the home run ball recently – allowing five homers in his last three starts compared to six homers in previous 14 starts.

Darvish had a terrific start against the Mets on June 7th where he held the Mets to only two hits and no runs over seven innings. The Mets have the following numbers against him:

  • Francisco Lindor 5-13, 2B, 2 BB, 2 K
  • Starling Marte 5-14, 2B, HR, BB, 2 K
  • Eduardo Escobar 3-14, 2 2B, HR, 6K

The Mets conclude their terrific first half of the season today! The Mets have battled through injuries throughout 2022 and more recently have survived Atlanta’s awakening. We are about to head into a week celebrating the Mets All-Stars that have made this season wonderful, but it’s not just the All-Stars on the team that have supported the Mets this season.

Pitchers like today’s starter, David Peterson, have really held the Mets together for long periods of time. Peterson has pitched 67 1/3 innings over 14 games this year with a 3.48 ERA, 4.00 FIP, 1.248 WHIP and a 115 ERA+. He has already pitched more innings this season than his last two seasons, his only other seasons as a major league pitcher.

Game Preview: Mets @ Cubs (Game 1)

The Mets and Cubs were rained out yesterday, so they’ll play two games as part of a split double header.

The first game today is probably the most anticipated game of the series as Marcus Stroman makes the start against his old club, the New York Mets. Stroman will face Taijuan Walker, who has had an amazing first half of the season and has held the rotation together.

The Mets traded for Stroman from the Braves a few years ago. After his second* season with the Mets, he accepted a qualifying offer to stay an additional year (he didn’t play his second season due to the pandemic). Surrounded by injuries last year, Stroman lasted the whole season, making 33 starts, pitching 179 innings while posting a 3.02 ERA and 134 ERA+. This off-season was a bit tumultuous between Stroman and the Mets. Ultimately, Stroman ended up signing a three year, 71 million dollar deal to play with the Cubs.

Over 10 starts and 51 1/3 innings this season, Stroman has a 4.91 ERA, 4.03 FIP, 1.188 FIP and an 86 ERA+. He had a short, but clean start his last time out allowing no runs from two hits and a walk over four innings against the Dodgers. That start was his first since returning from the injured list with a shoulder injury. Before Stroman landed on the injured list, he was finally only a roll, allowing only four earned runs over 24 innings. He then allowed nine runs over four innings in a start against the Cardinals (the start he got injured).

The Mets have the following numbers against Stroman:

  • Francisco Lindor 6-20, 2B, BB, 3 K
  • Eduardo Escobar 4-15, 2 2B, BB, K
  • Ender Inciarte 1-9, 4 K
  • Travis Jankowski 2-7, 2B, 2 K
  • Starling Marte 1-6
  • Mark Canha 1-3
  • Brandon Nimmo 1-1, 2 BB
  • Dominic Smith 0-2

Taijuan Walker finishes out his amazing first half of the season today for the Mets. Over 15 starts and 85 2/3 innings he has a 2.63 ERA, 3.00 ERA, 1.097 WHIP and 152 ERA+. Walker is coming off of a very strong start against Miami where he allowed no runs over seven innings from three hits and a walk. It was his second start in his last three where he went at least seven innings without allowing any runs. Walker has had a 1.85 ERA and a 2.01 FIP over his last six starts and 39 innings where he has also struck out 43 batters. The Cubs have the following numbers against him:

  • Yan Gomes 3-11, 2 K
  • Jason Heyward 1-7
  • Wilson Contreras 1-5, BB, K
  • Ian Happ 1-4, 2 BB
  • Andrelton Simmons 1-2, BB
  • Patrick Wisdom 1-2, K

The Mets head to Chicago after winning a critical series with the Braves. The Braves had a chance to take first place from the Mets with a sweep and the Mets were able to hold them off by taking two out of three. Now the Mets travel to the Windy City to finish their terrific first half of the season.

Carlos Carrasco gets the start for the Mets tonight. He’s made 17 starts and pitched 93 innings this year with a 4.55 ERA, 3.59 FIP, 1.344 WHIP and a 88 ERA+. • Jason Heyward 0-6, 2 BB, K
  • Andrelton Simmons 2-7
  • Wilson Contreras 2-6, 2 K

The Mets draw Keegan Thompson for the opener. Keegan has pitched in 19 games and made 11 starts over 77 innings with a 3.04 ERA, 3.62 FIP, 1.169 WHIP and a 139 ERA+. Game Preview: Mets vs Braves

The Mets and Braves end their three game set with an early afternoon game! Chris Bassitt will take on Charlie Morton!

Chris Bassitt has made 16 starts totaling 96 innings this season with a 3.94 ERA, 3.79 FIP, 1.135 WHIP and a 101 ERA+. Bassitt ended up as the losing pitcher his last time out despite a strong outing where he held the Marlins to two runs on six hits while walking no one. It was his first start since landing on the Covid related IL. Overall in his last four starts he has pitched 27 2/3 innings allowing eight runs (2.60 ERA) from 20 hits and only three walks while striking out 24 batters.

  • Austin Riley 2-3, HR
  • Eddie Rosario 1-3
  • Dansby Swanson 0-2, BB, K

It feels like the Mets have faced an overwhelming amount of rookies and young pitchers the last couple of weeks. That ends today – the Mets face 38-year-old Charlie Morton. Over 17 games and 94 innings this season he has a 4.21 ERA, 3.87 FIP, 1.223 WHIP and a 102 ERA+. He has been on a tear though recently that matches the tear the Braves as a team have been on. In his last five starts he has pitched 33 2/3 innings with a 1.60 ERA, 2.66 FIP. This includes 42 strikeouts.

He started against the Mets back on May 3rd and allowed five runs, four earned, over 5 2/3 innings from seven hits and three walks . The Braves have the following numbers against him:

Game Preview: Mets @ Braves

The Mets took the critical first game of the series last night in the battle of the Max’s! Max Scherzer looked great and held the Braves to only one run over seven innings. The bats were able to string together enough hits to score four runs. Edwin Díaz showed why he’s an All-Star and struck out all three batters he faced.

With the victory yesterday, it is now impossible for the Braves to finish the series in first place. Today and tomorrow are still critical games for the Mets as they look to build back more separation in the division.

David Peterson will make his 14th appearance this season this evening. So far he has tossed 62 innings with a 3.48 ERA, 4.01 FIP, 1.274 WHIP and a 115 ERA+. He’s coming off of a rough start against the Reds where he allowed three runs from four hits and five walks over 3 2/3 innings. Overall in his last four starts he has a 3.27 ERA with 32 strikeouts in 22 innings. In his previous 40 innings before that, he has 35 strikeouts.

In his one start against the Braves this season he allowed four runs, three earned over five innings from four hits and three walks. The Braves have the following career numbers against him:

  • Ronald Acuna Jr. 1-7, HR, 4 BB, 2 K
  • Marcell Ozuna 0-10, BB, 4 K
  • Austin Riley 5-10, 3 2B, BB, 3 K
  • Dansby Swanson 3-11, 2B, 5 K
  • Ozzie Albies 2-10
  • Travis d’Arnaud 0-8, BB, 5 K
  • Adam Duvall 4-6, 2 2B, HR, BB, K
  • Matt Olson 1-2, HR, BB

The Mets bats draw the young pitcher Spencer Strider. The 23-year-old right handed batter has pitched in 19 games this season throwing 65 2/3 innings. He has a 2.60 ERA, 1.83 FIP, 0.975 WHIP and a 166 ERA+. Only eight of those 19 games have been starts. As a starter he has thrown 41 1/3 innings with a 2.83 ERA and a 0.944 WHIP. He is in the midst of a dominating streak, allowing only one run over his three starts and 18 innings of work while striking out 30 batters. Very few Mets have seen Strider in a major league game:

  • Francisco Lindor 1-2
  • Brandon Nimmo 1-2, HR
  • Pete Alonso 0-0, BB
  • Dominic Smith 0-1
