Game Preview: Mets @ Dodgers

The Mets and Dodgers are set to play the second game of the set tonight, fresh off a Mets win last night! The headline of the game yesterday was Matz wins 5th straight. After that deplorable start at the beginning of the season, he has found his groove. The bullpen was able to put together 3 shutout innings with Familia’s 10th save of the season, 3rd in 3 days. On the offense side of the ball: more of the same. Granderson and Plawecki hit homers on the night while Cespedes had another RBI. Tonight deGrom looks to keep it going against Alex Wood.

Jacob deGrom is 3-1 over 4 starts and 22.2 innings with 5 walks and 16 K’s with a 1.99 ERA. His last start was his most human of the season allowing 3 ER over 5.0 innings and 8 hits against the Padres. Last year he had a tremendous start against the Dodgers, shutting them out over 7.2 ER allowing only 2 hits, walking 2, while recording 8 strikeouts. The Dodgers have the following numbers against deGrom:

  • Gonzalez 4-14, 2 HR
  • Utley 3-11
  • Turner 5-11, 3 2B
  • Kendrick 1-9
  • Pederson 0-6, 3 K
  • Crawford 0-6
  • Grandal 0-5
  • Puig 1-6, HR
  • Seager 2-6, 2B

Alex Wood is 1-3 over 6 starts and 33.0 innings with a 5.18 ERA. Alex has had two great starts this season, and 4 opposite of great starts. Against the Padres and Diamondbacks he pitched 14.0 innings allowing 2 ER. Against everyone else he has pitched between 4-5 innings allowing 3-5 earned runs and 5-6 runs total. Last year he went 0-1 against the Mets in two games allowing 7 earned runs, 8 total over 13.0 innings while striking out 13 (Mets drawing 7 walks). The Mets have the following numbers against Wood:

  • Lagares 5-20, 2 2B, HR
  • Duda 2-11
  • Flores 4-11, 2 2B, HR
  • Granderson 1-10, HR
  • Wright 3-7
  • Cabrera 2-3, 2B
  • Rivera 2-3
  • Cespedes 1-1, HR

The Mets completed the split of a 4 game set with the Padres yesterday before heading into LA tonight. Yesterday Matt Harvey recorded his first double-digit strikeout game of the year while the Mets actually scored a few runs without a homer (but also added a Cespedes shot for good measure). For the first time since the NLDS, the Mets will play the Dodgers where Utley is still playing. However, Tejada is no longer with the Mets, and Mattingly, who fanned the flames, is also no longer with the team, so we’ll see what happens.

Steven Matz is 4-1 over 5 starts this season and 28.2 innings with a 2.83 ERA while walking 7 and striking out 30. This is amazing considering his first start of the season. In his last four starts he’s 4-0 over 27.0 innings with a 0.67 ERA (2 ER) with 29 K’s. In the regular season last year, Matz faced the Dodgers once, holding them scoreless over 6.0 innings allowing 2 walks and 2 hits while striking out 8. The Dodgers have the following numbers against Matz:

  • Hernandez 2-6
  • Kendrick 1-6
  • Turner 1-5, 2B
  • Puig 0-5
  • Ellis 2-4
  • Gonzalez 1-3
  • Seager 0-2

The Mets will get to face former Steven Matz – Scott Kazmir (shamelessly stolen from the WOR booth), who is 2-2 over 6 games and 31.2 innings with a 5.68 ERA. His best start was his first one where he pitched 6.0 scoreless innings. Since then he has had a 7.01 ERA over 25.2 innings over 5 games and only one quality start over that stretch. He hasn’t faced the Mets since 2014 where he pitched against the Amazin’s twice going 1-1 over 9.0 innings allowing 8 ER. The Mets have the following numbers against Scott:

  • Cabrera 2-17, 2B
  • Granderson 3-11, 3B, HR
  • Cespedes 0-6
  • Rivera 2-7
  • Campbell 2-5, 2B
  • De Aza 3-5
  • Wright 2-5, 2B

Honestly, I’m not sure why the Mets are playing today. I’m really unsure of why anyone is playing today. Bartolo Colon hit his first major league career homer last night and as far as I’m concerned, baseball is over. It had a good run. The impossible was achieved and there’s no true reason to keep playing the games from this point out. But if baseball has to continue, it might as well be on Harvey day.

Matt Harvey will look to put his season back on the right track tonight as he takes on the Padres. On the season he is 2-4 over 6 games and 34.0 innings with a 4.76 ERA while striking out 25. He’s been a tick better in his last three games pitching 16.2 innings with 16 K’s with a 3.78 ERA. The last time he faced the Padres was back in 2013 where he picked up a win over two games allowing 2 ER over 13.0 innings while recording 16 K’s. The Padres have the following numbers against Harvey:

  • Jay 1-5
  • Kemp 1-3, HR
  • Ramirez 0-3
  • Cashner 0-1

Cashner is 2-2 this season over 6 starts and 29.2 innings with a 4.85 ERA while recording 27 K’s. In his last two starts he has logged 8.2 innings of work allowing 9 runs, 6 earned with 7 walks and 8 K’s. Last year he was 0-1 in two games against the Mets allowing 13 runs, 10 earned in 10.0 innings of work. The Mets have the following numbers against Andrew:

  • Walker 2-10, 2 2B
  • Duda 2-8, 2 2B
  • Granderson 2-9, 2B, HR
  • Wright 1-7, HR
  • De Aza 1-4
  • Lagares 2-4, 3B
  • Plawecki 1-5

The Mets are learning the hard way on the West Coast that the Padres are in the midst of a rise in their pitching staff. Alas, the Mets dropped another close one where they couldn’t get much done at the plate. Tonight Bartolo Colon will try to reverse that as he takes on James Shields.

Bartolo is 2-1 over 6 games and 5 starts this year logging 31.2 innings with a 2.56 ERA. His last game he tossed eight beautiful innings allowing 7 hits, no walks, and no runs while striking out 7. Last year he did not have a good start against the Padres allowing 6 ER over 2.1 innings. The Padres have the following numbers against Bartolo:

  • Upton 10-33, 2B, 3B, HR
  • Ramirez 0-15
  • Jay 2-9, 2B
  • Kemp 4-9
  • Weeks 0-7
  • Wallace 1-5

James Sheild is 1-4 on the season over 6 starts and 39.0 innings with a 3.23 ERA. His last two starts have been excellent allowing a combined 2 earned runs over 13.0 innings against the Giants and the Rockies. In two starts last year against the Mets he went 1-1 over 14.0 innings allowing 13 hits and 5 ER (3.21 ERA) while striking out 8. The Mets have the following numbers against Shields:

  • Granderson 8-64, 2 2B, 3B, 2 HR
  • De Aza 6-33, 2B
  • Cabrera 6-24, 2B, 3B, HR
  • Cespedes 0-7
  • Duda 2-6, HR
  • Rivera 1-6
  • Walker 1-6
  • Lagares 1-4, 2B

The Mets dropped the first game of the series last night against the Padres 5-3. Despite the dimensions of Petco Park, the Mets were able to still hit two homers (Granderson and Cespedes). Tonight, Noah Syndergaard will try to get the Mets back on track while the Mets bats will get a look at Drew Pomeranz.

Noah is 2-1 over 5 starts and 32.1 innings with a 2.51 ERA while striking out 44. In his last start he allowed 4 ER over 5.2 innings while striking out 6, although that doesn’t tell the whole story. In the 4th inning he allowed 3 runs, including a 2 run homer, so a bad inning, and in the next inning, the bullpen allowed a run. Last year Syndergaard was 1-1 against the Padres allowing 7 ER over 12.0 innings while striking out 19. It was the most amount of runs he allowed against any team last year. The Padres have the following numbers against Noah:

  • Kemp 0-6
  • Norris 2-6, HR
  • Shields 0-2

Drew Pomeranz is 2-3 over 5 starts with a 2.48 ERA this year while pitching 29.0 innings. In his last start he allowed 1 ER over 7.0 innings rebounding from his only bad start of the season where he allowed 4 runs, 3 earned over 4.1 innings. He was traded to the Padres from the Athletics this off-season in the Alonso trade. In his career he has pitched 4.0 innings in one start against the Mets allowing 5 hits, 2 runs only 1 earned. A few Mets have seen him in his career:

  • Cabrera 1-2, 2B
  • Duda 0-1
  • Wright 0-1, BB
  • De Aza 0-1

Game Preview: Mets @ Padres

The Mets have gone west, or as I call it “eh, the week where I’ll probably read about the Mets game in the morning” and they left on a bang! The Mets were completely on yesterday smashing homers, including two from Lucas Duda, and a dazzling outing from Steven Matz that had him slicing and dicing the Atlanta lineup. Today Jacob deGrom looks to keep that going in one of the most beautiful cities in the United States.

Jacob is 3-0 in as many starts this season with a 1.02 ERA over 17.2 innings while walking 4 and striking out 14. His last outing was his first scoreless one on the season as he held the Giants to 0’s over 6.0 innings despite walking 4 of them. Last year he had one start against the Padres and it was a great one as he held them scoreless over 8.0 innings while allowing only 2 hits, no walks and recording 8 K’s. The Padres have the following numbers against Jacob:

  • Kemp 2-8, 2B
  • Upton 3-6
  • Bethancourt 0-7
  • Jay 2-2, 2B

The Mets bats will get a crack at Colin Rea today. Colin is 2-1 over 6 games and 5 starts this year logging 27.1 innings of work with an ERA of 4.61 while walking 13 and striking out 22. He’s pitched in as many games this year as he did last year, when he made his major league debut. He’s been better than his numbers suggest because his first start was a disastrous 5 ER, 3.1 inning affair. Since then he has pitched 23.0 innings in 4 starts with a 3.13 ERA. This will be his first career start against the Mets and no one on the Mets roster faced him last year as members of other teams.

Game Preview: Braves vs Mets

The Mets and Braves will play a rubber game this afternoon as the Mets look to take the series! Last night was a night to forget for the Mets. Harvey still wasn’t his old self and the offense couldn’t click, leading to a 3-0 loss. That’s ok, it’s a long season. Steven Matz will get the nod for the Amazin’s in the matinee game. He’s 3-1 over 4 starts and 21.0 innings with a 3.86 ERA while recording 7 walks and 22 strikeouts. In his last three starts thought, he is 3-0 over 19.1 innings with 21 K’s and an ERA of 0.93. One of those starts was against the Braves were he allowed 2 ER over 9 hits in 6.1 innings of work while striking out 8. The Braves have the following numbers against Matz:

  • Markakis 2-6
  • Castro 4-6, HR
  • Freeman 3-5, 2B

Game Preview: Braves vs Mets

The Mets had a tremendous first inning last night and then put it in cruise control as they bounced back nicely from Sunday’s loss. The bottom half of the first frame included homers from Wright, Cespedes and Duda. After those four runs, Colon just sliced and diced his way through the game and into the record books passing Pedro Martinez for wins by a Dominican born player. Tonight, Matt Harvey will look to do the same to the Braves lineup.

Harvey is 2-3 over 28.1 innings and 5 starts with a 4.76 ERA. He is 2-0 in his last two starts logging 11.0 innings of work posting a 3.27 ERA which includes a 5.0 inning, 7 hit, 2 run performance against the Braves. He still hasn’t exactly looked like Harvey yet this year, so here’s hoping that happens tonight! The Braves have the following numbers against him:

  • Freeman 0-9, 3 K
  • Markakis 0-5, 2K
  • K Johnson 2-5
  • Brignac 1-3
  • Castro 0-3
  • Flowers 0-3
  • Garcia 2-3
  • Pierzynski 3-3

The Mets bats will get a look at Wisler who is 0-2 over 5 games and 4 starts this year pitching 25.1 innings with a 4.26 ERA. He has had one great start this year allowing only an unearned run over 6.2 innings against the Dodgers. Outside of that start, in his other three, he has allowed 12 ER over 17.2 innings. In his rookie season last year he was quite good against the Mets going 2-1 over 3 starts and 21.0 innings with a 2.14 ERA. The Mets have the following numbers vs Matt:

  • Granderson 1-9
  • Duda 1-8
  • Cespedes 2-6, 2B
  • Conforto 3-6
  • Flores 1-6
  • Plawecki 2-5
  • Wright 1-6, HR

Game Preview: Braves vs Mets

The Mets look to get back on the winning track as they welcome the Braves to Queens! Yesterday the Mets ended their 8 game winning streak after Bumgarner and the Giants were able to beat Syndergaard. Syndergaard was fine with the exception of one inning, and the Mets were getting hits, they just couldn’t string them together or finish the job. It happens. Now Bartolo looks to bring them back to the correct column.

Colon is 1-1 over 5 games and 4 starts logging 23.2 innings with a 3.42 ERA. Colon was average in his last start against the Reds where he allowed 3 ER over 5.0 innings, striking out 4 while allowing 8 hits. This will be his first start against the Braves this year, last year he went 4-0 over 5 starts and 32.0 innings of work against Atlanta posting a 3.66 ERA. The Braves have the following numbers vs Colon:

  • Pierzynski 17-62, 2 2B, 2 HR
  • Markakis 10-44, 5 2B
  • Aybar 7-27, 2B, 3B
  • Freeman 9-20, 3 2B
  • K Johnson 2-13, 2B
  • Peterson 3-13, 2B, 3B
  • Francoeur 1-8

The Mets get a look at Mike Foltynewicz today, who is making his 2016 debut. Last year he went 4-6 over 18 games, 15 starts putting in 86.2 innings of work with a 5.71 ERA. He had one start against the Mets allowing 6 runs, 5 earned over 4.1 innings. He has pretty good numbers in the minors this year going 1-2 over 4 games posting a 2.05 ERA. The Mets have the following numbers vs Mike:

  • Duda 3-4, HR
  • Flores 2-4, 2B
  • Granderson 2-4
  • Cabrera 1-3, HR
  • Cespedes 0-3
  • Lagares 1-3

Game Preview: Giants vs Mets

The Mets and Giants will hope to get today’s game in with the weather as the Mets look for their 9th straight win, and 3rd consecutive sweep. Today will be the toughest test of the last couple of weeks for the Mets as they find themselves in a marquee pitching matchup between Bumgarner and Syndergaard.

Syndergaard is 2-0 over 4 starts and 26.2 innings with a 1.69 ERA. On the season he has walked 4 batters while striking out 38. He is coming off his worst start of the season, which would be good to average for anyone else, where he allowed 3 ER over 6.2 innings while striking out 9. Last year he allowed 4 ER over 6.0 innings and 10 hits against the Giants while striking out only 2. The Giants have the following numbers against Noah:

  • Belt 0-2
  • Crawford 1-3
  • Duffy 2-3, HR
  • Pagan 0-3
  • Panik 1-3
  • Posey 2-3

Bumgarner is 2-2 over 5 starts this season and 29.2 innings with a 3.64 ERA. He has allowed 10 walks and has also struck out 38 batters this season. His numbers are being influenced by one bad start. In his last two he has allowed 4 ER over 13.2 innings while striking out 17. Madison missed the Mets in 2015 but in 2014 he threw a complete game shutout striking out 10 Mets. The Amazin’s hav ethe following numbers against Bumgarner:

  • Walker 3-13
  • Cespedes 2-8
  • Wright 2-9
  • Cabrera 3-6
  • Flores 1-6, 2B
  • Lagares 0-6
  • Granderson 0-3
  • Rivera 2-3, 2B, HR
