Game Preview: White Sox vs Mets

The Mets and White Sox find themselves playing the rubber game this afternoon. The Mets were cruising for most of the night last night until the 6th inning. Matz, who was dicing the lineup up until that point, allowed 3 runs and didn’t make it out of the inning. Syndergaard then pitched a solid inning, and then Robles blew the game and the Mets bats couldn’t get it back.

Jacob deGrom will try to put everything back together today. Jacob is 3-1 over 8 starts and 48.0 innings with a 2.81 ERA while recording 37 K’s. After several starts in a row of average to below average starts, deGrom rebounded with a strong outing his last time out going 7.0 innings holding the Dodgers to 1 ER while striking out 7. Jacob has never faced the White Sox before but has faced a couple of batters on other teams:

  • Rollins 1-8
  • Frazier 0-2

Miguel Gonzalez is in the midst of his first season with the White Sox after four with the Orioles. Gonzalez is 0-1 over 5 starts and 28.0 innings with a 4.50 ERA. In his last three starts he is 0-1 over 17.0 innings striking out 14 with a 4.24 ERA. Miguel has never faced the Mets before but has faced several players while they were on other teams:

  • Granderson 1-17, 2B
  • Cabrera 3-13, 2B, HR
  • Cespedes 6-13
  • De Aza 4-7, HR
  • Rivera 1-7
  • Walker 2-3

Is that you, 2015? Are you back?

Yesterday the Mets beat the White Sox 1-0 thanks to the first strong, strong Harvey start of the season. The world is a beautiful place again. See you next Harvey Day! In the mean time, we get to see Steven Matz today, who has been ok. He’s 7-1 on the season over as many starts with a 2.36 ERA and 49.2 innings with 50 K’s. In his last 7 starts he is 7-0 over 48.0 innings and 49 K’s with a 1.13 ERA. He’s been ok. His last outing was the 4th time this season he held his opponent scoreless. This will be his first start against the Chicago White Sox and has faced two members of the White Sox while they were on other teams:

  • Frazier 1-6, HR
  • Jackson 0-1

Mat Latos is 6-1 this season, his first with Chicago, over 9 starts and 51.0 innings with a 4.06 ERA. His last start was his first quality start since April 24th (and just barely, as he allowed 3 ER over 6.0 innings). In his first four starts of the season he pitched 24.1 innings with a 0.74 ERA. Since then he has pitched 26.2 innings over 5 starts with a 7.09 ERA. Last year he was 0-1 against the Mets in 2 games and 10.0 innings allowing 5 ER and 11 hits. The Mets have the following numbers against Latos:

  • Walker 7-25, 2B, 2 HR
  • Lagares 3-11
  • Cabrera 1-10
  • Granderson 2-8, 2B
  • Flores 1-7
  • Cespedes 0-5
  • Campbell 1-2
  • De Aza 2-3

The Mets try to get back on track as the White Sox come to town for the early game. Yesterday the Mets were able to claw their way back in the 8th inning to tie the game at 2 vs the Dodgers, but Familia was flustered in the ninth and the Mets eventually lost 4-2. The big story for today is, will Matt Harvey be Harvey? The word on the street is the Mets staff found a mechanical issue in his extended bullpen session and worked on it. Also, will the extended session impact him? The numbers on the season are bleak this season at 3-7 over 10 starts and 53.1 innings with a 6.08 ERA over 44 K’s. Its been a while since he faced the White Sox. In 2013 he pitched a one hitter, complete game shutout with 12 K’s against them. The White Sox have the following numbers against Harvey:

  • Rollins 5-22, 2 2B, 2 HR
  • Frazier 2-9
  • Jackson 1-4
  • Cabrera 1-3

The Mets draw Jose Quintana today who is 5-4 with a 2.22 ERA over 10 starts and 65.0 innings of work on the season. He’s been more human in his last two starts going 0-2 over 12.1 innings with 7 ER and 13 K’s. He’s never faced the Mets before but he has faced a few Mets batters while they were members of other teams:

  • Cabrera 2-19
  • Cespedes 9-15, 2 2B, 3B, 4 HR
  • Granderson 1-4, HR
  • Walker 0-3

Game Preview: Dodgers vs Mets

Well last night was, interesting.

The game started off with a beautiful ceremony to recognize the 1986 Mets. Then things went down hill. Syndergaard threw a pitch behind Utley, which is most likely a wild pitch. Under any other circumstance where teams have tension, that would have been a warning to both benches. (No tension, just a mistake, probably not even notable outside of a snide, “Just a bit outside”). However there was an umpire who was inexperienced behind the plate and immediately tossed Syndergaard. I’ve watched a lot of baseball and I’ve never seen such a quick pull of the ejection trigger. Anyway the Dodgers went on to pile up the runs and now the Mets head into the last game against the Dodgers in the regular season tonight.

Bartolo Colon is 4-3 over 10 games and 9 starts with a 55.0 innings with a 3.44 ERA. He is coming off one of his strongest starts of the season after two not so good ones. Last time out he allowed 1 ER over 7.0 innings vs the Nationals. His one start against the Dodgers this year was not so good as he allowed 5 ER over 5 innings. The Dodgers have the following numbers vs Bartolo:

  • Crawford 6-36, 2 2B
  • Gonzalez 13-28, 2 2B, 3 HR
  • Kendrick 3-25
  • Utley 10-20, 2 2B, HR
  • Turner 1-12
  • Puig 0-9
  • Grandal 2-8, HR

Clayton Kershaw is Clayton Kershaw. He’s leading the league in ERA, again, for the 5th time in 6 seasons at 1.48 over a 7-1 record and 10 starts with 3 complete game shutouts and 79.0 innings. Currently he’s leading the league in innings (he did that last year too) and is leading the game in complete game shutouts at 3. He lead the league with 3 in that same category all of last season. All three complete game shutouts came in the month of May starting off with the Padres, then two starts later against the Mets and then his last start (also two starts later), the Reds. The Mets have the following numbers against the Mets:

  • Wright 3-21, 2B
  • Granderson 4-20, 2B
  • Walker 1-12
  • Cespedes 1-12
  • Lagares 1-12
  • Rivera 2-8
  • Cabrera 2-7

Game Preview: Dodgers vs Mets

The Mets walked off the Dodgers last night and look to keep rolling tonight. Yesterday Jacob deGrom put together a fantastic outing going 7.0 innings, striking out 7 holding the Dodgers to 1 run. Then Familia allowed 4 runs to blow the save for the first time in a while but it was ok because Curtis Granderson smacked a winning homer in the next inning. Also an important note, David Wright hit a homer for a third consecutive game. Now the Mets look to get to Maeda behind Noah Syndergaard.

Syndergaard is 5-2 over 9 games with 60.1 innings with a 1.94 ERA and 76 K’s. In his last two starts he has allowed 1 run, 0 earned, over 14.0 innings with 21 K’s. His start before that was against the Dodgers where he went 8.0 innings with 2 ER while striking out 6 batters. The Dodgers have the following numbers against Noah:

  • Kendrick 1-11
  • Gonzalez 2-9, HR
  • Grandal 1-7, HR
  • Seager 2-8, HR
  • Utley 1-8
  • Turner 2-6, 2 2B

Maeda is 3-3 over 9 starts and 52.0 innings with 48 K’s this year while posting a 3.29 ERA. His last three starts haven’t been the greatest where he pitched 14.0 innings allowing 12 ER with a 7.71 ERA including a start against the Mets where he allowed 4 ER over 5.0 innings. It’s worth noting most of the Mets offense in that start came from two homers via Noah Syndergaard. The Mets have the following numbers against Kenta:

  • Cabrera 0-3
  • Cespedes 1-3
  • Conforto 1-3
  • Granderson 0-3
  • Walker 1-3, 2B
  • Syndergaard 2-2, 2 HR

Game Preview: Dodgers vs Mets

The Mets come back home after a critical series win in DC. On Wednesday, Steven Matz tossed an absolute gem as he led the Mets 2-0 vs the division leaders, bringing the season series vs the Nationals to an even 3-3. Now the Mets welcome the Dodgers into town for the last time this year (since they already faced them 4 times in LA earlier this month).

The Mets will kick off the series with Jacob deGrom who is 3-1 over 7 games and 41.0 innings with a 3.07 ERA and 30 K’s. May has been rough for Jacob who pitched 23.1 innings with an 0-1 record recording 16 K’s and a 4.63 ERA. One of his best starts this month was against the Dodgers where he allowed 2 ER over 7.0 innings. The Dodgers have the following numbers against Jacob:

  • Gonzalez 6-16, 2 HR
  • Utley 4-15, 2B
  • Turner 5-14, 3 2B
  • Pederson 1-9, 2B
  • Crawford 0-9
  • Kendrick 1-10
  • Grandal 1-8, 2B
  • Puig 2-9, HR

The Mets will draw Julio Urias in his major league debut. He’s widely regarded as one of the best pitching prospects in baseball and he’s only 19 years old. In 2014 he posted a 2.36 ERA over 25 games, 20 starts in the minors and last year he registered a 3.81 ERA over 18 starts. This year he has been incredibly posting a 1.10 ERA over 8 games, 7 starts in the incredibly hitter friendly PCL league.

The Mets lost to the Nationals last night, setting up a matinee rubber game today between Steven Matz and Tanner Roark. After drubbing the Nationals Monday night, the Nationals got the better of the Mets last night. A Mets win today will bring the season series between the two clubs to 3-3. Steven Matz is 6-1 over 7 starts and 41.2 innings with 43 K’s with an ERA of 2.81. However, when you take out the first start of the season, he is 6-0 in his last 6 starts with an 1.35 ERA over 40.0 innings with 42 K’s. He’s been a bit more human in his last two starts going 13.0 innings with 4 ER and 13 K’s. This will be Steven Matz’s first start against the Nationals and no one on the Nationals roster has seen him while a member of other teams.

Tanner Roark is 3-3 over 9 starts with 56.0 innings and 2.89 ERA in his return to the rotation this year. He is coming off back to back starts against the Marlins (4 0f his 9 starts are against the Marlins this year), one where he allowed 7 ER over 5.0 innings and one where he allowed 1 ER over 6.2 innings. Last year he logged 11.1 innings against the Mets over 5 games, 1 start with a 3.18 ERA. The Mets have the following numbers against Tanner:

  • Lagares 2-11, 2B
  • Wright 2-9
  • Rivera 3-8, 2B
  • Cespedes 1-6, 2B
  • Walker 2-5, 2 2B

The Mets got exactly what they needed out of Colon last night to help erase the feelings from the last two games against the Nationals last week. Colon had a strong outing and was backed by a 5-run Mets inning (featuring a 3-run jack from David Wright) and later a homer from Cespedes (who now leads the league). Now the Mets call on Harvey on a day they need him against Strasburg for round 2. In case you haven’t heard yet, tonight is Support Harvey Night hosted by The 7 Line, who are making an emergency trip down 95. Matt is 3-6 over 6 starts and 48.1 innings with a 5.77 ERA. His last outing (against the Nationals) was the worst of the season going 2.2 innings allowing 8 hits and 9 runs, 6 earned while walking 2 and striking out 2. The Nationals have the following numbers against Harvey:

  • Harper 1-22
  • Werth 4-20, 2B
  • Zimmerman 4-19, 2B, HR
  • Taylor 4-18, 2B
  • Rendon 5-15, 2B
  • Ramos 4-13, 2B
  • Revere 4-13, 3B
  • Robinson 4-11, 2B

Strasburg is having quite the season. He is now 7-0 over 9 starts and 61.0 innings with a 2.80 ERA. His last start was the first in a week or so that could be ranked as “great” where he went 6.0 innings allowing 1 ER with 6 hits, 1 walk while striking out 10. That start was against the Mets who have the following numbers against Strasburg:

  • Wright 7-25
  • Duda 2-15, HR
  • Granderson3-16
  • Walker 5-14, HR
  • Lagares 2-12
  • Cespedes 2-5
  • Conforto 0-6, 3 K

The Mets head down to DC to avenge the last series against the Nationals that went real south, real fast in the last two games. Since then, the Mets have swept the Brewers and started to rebuild confidence. Bartolo will get the start tonight with a 3-3 record over 9 games, 8 starts, with 48.0 innings of work with a 3.75 ERA. His last outing was his shortest of the season, so he’ll be looking to get back at the Nationals personally where he went 4.2 innings, 5 hits with 3 ER while walking 5 batters. To put that in perspective, he had 4 walks throughout the season before that. The Nationals have the following numbers against Bartolo:

  • Revere 8-24, 2B
  • Harper 3-13, HR
  • Rendon 6-16, HR
  • Werth 5-10, 2 2B
  • Ramos 2-14, 2B
  • Taylor 2-9, 2B
  • Gonzalez 2-6, HR

In his last start he 6.1 innings holding the Mets to 5 hits and 1 ER with 5 K’s. The Mets have the following numbers against Gio:

  • Granderson 4-33, 2B, HR
  • Lagares 11-29, 3 2B, 3B, HR
  • Wright 6-24, 2B, 3B, HR
  • Cabrera 3-20
  • Campbell 3-18
  • Cespdes 4-7, HR

Game Preview: Brewers vs Mets

David. Wright.

He’s had a tough week, he’s had a really tough season.

Yesterday he was looking at a 3-0 count with the bases loaded and one out on a take pitch with a wild pitcher on the mound and he just took a fastball to the right side of centerfield to drive in the winning run, because that’s what captains do. Today the Mets look to beat the Brewers for the third day in a row behind Noah Syndergaard. Syndergaard is 4-2 over 8 starts and 53.1 innings with a 2.19 ERA. In his last three starts he has tossed 21.0 innings with a 1.71 ERA with a 2-1 record and 21 K’s. Last year he allowed 1 ER over 6.0 innings with 5 K’s against the Brewers. The Brewers have the following numbers against Thor:

  • Braun 1-3
  • Anderson 1-2
  • Gennett 0-2

The Mets draw Chase Anderson one start after one of the best of his career. Right now he is 2-5 over 8 start and 44.0 innings with a 5.32 ERA. In his last start he pitched 8.2 innings allowing 2 ER over 3 hits (2 homers) after flirting with a no hitter. His first two starts of the season were quite good but then things went haywire for the next 4 starts. Last year he had a 4.50 ERA over 2 starts allowing 5 ER over 10.0 innings and 16 hits. The Mets have the following numbers against Chase Anderson:

  • Granderson 1-5
  • Duda 1-5, HR
  • Lagares 3-5, HR
  • Rivera 1-3
  • Walker 1-4
  • Cabrera 0-2
  • Campbell 1-2
  • Syndergaard 1-2
