Game Preview: Mets @ Tigers

The Mets and Tigers finally conclude their series this afternoon as Jacob deGrom takes on Anibal Sanchez. Before we get to our old friend in Sanchez, let’s take a look at deGrom. Jacob is 7-5 on the season over 19 starts and 119.2 innings with a 2.41 ERA. After allowing 5 ER over 10 hits in 3.2 innings against the Marlins, he has tossed 14.0 innings of shutout ball allowing 9 hits and two walks while striking out 14 against the Rockies and the Yankees. The last time the Mets faced the Tigers was in 2013, and deGrom broke into the majors into 2014, so this will be his first time seeing the Tigers, but he has seen three batters before:

  • Upton 2-12, 6 K
  • Saltalamacchia 1-11, 2B, 5 K
  • Maybin 0-6

The Mets will get a look at Anibal Sanchez who broke into the league in 2006 as a member of the Marlins and was with them until 2012 when he was traded mid-season to the Tigers. This year he has pitched 25 games with 17 starts and 100.2 innings with a 6.26 ERA and a 6-11 record, his worst season since 2008. That being said, he’s coming off of a solid start against the White Sox where he held them to 1 ER over 6.0 innings. The last time he faced the Mets was back in 2011 where he went 0-1 over two starts allowing 18 hits and 6 ER over 13.0 innings of work. The Mets have the following numbers on Anibal:

  • K Johnson 5-29, 2B, 3B, HR
  • Cespedes 4-18
  • Walker 4-17, 2B, HR
  • Loney 5-15, 3B
  • De Aza 4-12, 2 2B
  • Bruce 2-8
  • Granderson 2-7, HR

The Mets and Tigers continue their three game set tonight as Logan Verrett takes on Matt Boyd. Both Verrett and Boyd have limited time in the majors, and since its unusual for a team in the AL Central to play a team in the NL East (well, as unusual as any interleague series with the Mets outside of the Yankees), the two have very little experience against their opposing teams.

Verrett is coming off of his first start in the Subway Series where he allowed 3 ER over 5.0 innings. In his last four starts in total he has pitched 23.1 innings with a 3.86 ERA (compared to his season stats which include 28 games and 10 starts of 79.1 innings of work and a 4.20 ERA). Even though he started in the league as a member of the Rangers last year, he has never faced the Tigers and the only person on their roster who has seen him is Maybin who is 0-1 with an RBI.

The Mets bats will get a look at Matt Boyd who is 2-2 over 10 games and 9 starts this year totaling 49.2 innings of work with a 4.71 ERA. Boyd was part of the trade the Blue Jays made with the Tigers to get David Price last season. Boyd has never faced the Mets and hasn’t faced any of the players the Mets have acquired from other places over the last two years.

The Mets head to Detroit! The Mets are coming off of a season split with the Yankees where they picked up the win last night after a good Colon start, a solid 3-run homer by Bruce and close save by Familia, now they head to the midwest!

Noah Syndergaard is 9-5 over 21 games and 20 starts this season totaling 123.1 innings with a 2.48 ERA. He is coming off back to back average starts allowing a total of 6 runs, 4 earned over 12.0 innings with 14 K’s. Not surprisingly, this will be Noah Syndergaard’s first time facing the Tigers but two Tigers have seen him as members of other clubs. Justin Upton is 0-6 with 4 K’s while Maybin is 0-2.

The Mets bats draw Justin Verlander who is 11-6 over 22 starts and 147.1 innings with a 3.54 ERA. He is coming off of what may be his best start of the season allowing only 2 ER over 9.0 innings while striking out 11 and in general July was fantastic for him as he made six starts going 4-0 over 42.2 innings with a 1.69 ERA and 48 K’s. He faced the Mets way back in 2010 where he allowed 5 ER over 2.0 innings of work. The Mets have the following numbers on Justin:

  • Granderson 5-25, 2 2B, 3B, HR
  • Cespedes 7-21, 2 2B

The Mets will try to split the season series with the Yankees tonight as they play game 4 in the Bronx. Last night the Mets hit into multiple double plays early on in the game ending rallies early while the Yankees piled on the runs early. In the end the end, it was just too much for the Mets to overcome and they ended up losing 9-5.

Bartolo Colon will try to put them back on the right track. He’s 9-6 over 22 games and 21 starts pitching 120.2 innings with a 3.58 ERA. He’s coming off of a rough start against the Rockies where he allowed 5 ER over 5.0 innings and in his last five starts he’s alternated between being terrible and fantastic, the pendulum is supposed to swing to fantastic tonight. The last time he faced the Yankees was in 2014 where he allowed 7 runs, 6 earned over 5.2 innings. The Yankees have the following numbers against Colon:

  • A Rod 23-56, 7 2B, 3B, 8 HR
  • Teixeira 12-42, 2 2B, 3 HR
  • Ellsbury 4-15, 2B
  • Gardner 3-10, HR
  • Castro 3=7, 2B
  • Headley 1-7
  • McCann 1-3

The Mets draw Nathan Eovaldi who is in his second season with the Yankees. He’s 9-7 this year over 22 games and 19 starts with a 4.78 ERA over 116.2 innings. In his last three starts, returning to the rotation, he has pitched 18.0 innings allowing 6 ER, so a 3.00 ERA. He had one start against the Mets last year where he allowed 4 ER over 7 hits and 4.1 innings. The Mets have the following numbers against Nathan:

  • Granderson 4-8, 2 HR
  • Bruce 1-7
  • d’Arnaud 1-4, 2B

  • Niese 0-5
  • Flores 1-4, 2B

The Mets offense finally came together last night as they beat the Yankees 7-1. Bruce went 0-4 in his debut last night but the players around him came through as De Aza and d’Arnaud both hit homers and multiple Mets had key hits with runners on to make the game unattainable for the Yankees. Last night even featured the return of Jon Niese! Tonight the game will shift to the Bronx as Steven Matz takes on Chad Green.

Steven Matz is 8-7 over 19 starts and 113.0 innings with a 3.35 ERA. In his last start he allowed 2 ER over 6.0 innings while striking out 5. He didn’t have his best stuff and labored through his 6.0 innings allowing 10 hits, but he allowed only 2 runs and put the Mets in a good position at the end of the day (the bats didn’t come through though). In his last two starts he has totaled 2 ER in 12.0 innings. He faced the Yankees towards the end of last year were he allowed 1 ER over 6.0 innings. The Yankees have the following numbers against Matz:

  • Gardner 1-2
  • Gregorius 1-3
  • Headley 1-3
  • Castro 0-2

The Mets bats draw Chad Green who is 1-2 over 7 starts and 3 starts this year with a 4.56 ERA over 23.2 innings in his rookie season. Green is returning to the rotation after the sell-off the Yankees went through at the deadline. He started July off with a strong start, 1 run, 0 earned, over 6.0 innings but followed that up allowing 7 ER over 4.1 innings. Since the All-Star break he’s been in the pen pitching 8.1 innings over three games allowing no runs. Not surprisingly, he has never faced the Mets or anyone on the Mets roster.

Last night was a good example of “You can never get enough runs”. After going up early 1-0, the Mets found themselves down 3-1 and then 3-2. Reynolds hit a 3 run homer in an inning where the Mets sent 9 batters to the plate to make it 5-3, but the Mets left the bases loaded in that inning. The bullpen later faltered and the Mets, who were playing several men down eventually lost in extra innings.

Jacob deGrom looks to turn things around for the Mets tonight. He is 6-5 over 18 starts and 112.1 innings with a 2.56 ERA. His last start was great as he held the Rockies scoreless over 7.0 innings in a game the Mets eventually loss, it was a good bounce back start for Jacob as in his previous starte he allowed 5 ER over 3.2 innings. Jacob’s first, and on of his few, rough starts last year was against the Yankees in the Bronx as he allowed 6 ER over 5.0 innings. The Yankees have the following numbers against him:

  • Castro 3-11
  • Ellsbury 2-6, 2B, HR
  • Gardner 2-5
  • McCann 3-6
  • Tex 2-5, 2 HR
  • Beltran 0-2

The Mets bats will get a look at Masahiro Tanaka tonight who is 7-3 over 21 starts and 134.0 innings this season while posting a 3.16 ERA. He is coming off of his first rough start since July 10th where he allowed 4 ER over 5.0 innings (in the two starts previously: 1 ER over 12.0 innings). Last year he held the Mets to 2 ER and 5 hits over 6.0 innings of work. The Mets have the following numbers against him:

  • Cespedes 3-13
  • Cabrera 0-8
  • Granderson 0-6
  • Loney 3-5
  • De Aza 1-4
  • Rivera 0-3
  • Ruggiano 0-2
  • Conforto 0-2

Game Preview: Yankees vs Mets

The Mets really needed the win yesterday in a bad way. For a while, yesterday’s game felt like an extension of the entire weekend: a long, drawn out game where the Mets were slowly letting it slip away. When the Rockies took the lead, the Mets offense was no where to be found. But Walker mustered some magic and slammed a 3 run homer. Everything clicked. The Mets had the lead and the started to pitch like it (thank you Reed and Familia!). Tonight the Mets are hoping to get it done against the Yankees.

Logan Verrett gets the nod for the Mets today. He’s 3-6 over 9 starts and 27 games with 74.1 innings with a 4.12 ERA. In his last three starts he has tossed 18.1 innings with a 3.44 ERA, so he’s getting better. This will be his first start against the Yankees and the only player on their roster who has faced Logan is Starlin Castro who is 0-1.

The Mets bats will get a crack at CC Sabathia today who is 6-8 over 107.0 innings over 18 starts with a 3.95 ERA for his best season since 2012. The end of June to late July was rough for CC as he posted a 7.46 ERA over 35.0 innings in 6 starts (31 earned runs). His last start was more positive as he allowed 2 ER over 6.2 innings. Sabathia had two very different starts against the Mets last year. In April he allowed 7 ER over 5.0 innings and in September he allowed only 1 ER over 6.0 innings. The Mets have the following numbers against CC:

  • Granderson 4-22
  • Loney 5-23, HR
  • Cabrera 6-17, 2B, HR
  • Cespedes 2-14, 2B
  • K Johnson 5-15
  • De Aza 1-10
  • Ruggiano 1-8

Game Preview: Rockies vs Mets

The Mets try to avoid the four game sweep and their fifth loss in a row this afternoon as they take on the Rockies. It’s been a struggle of late for the Amazin’s who have scored only 40 runs since the All-Star break, a major league low. Last night, Colon got roughed up towards the end of this outing after a series of defensive miscues from a non-optimal defensive lineup for the Mets. The Rox were able to pull away in the later innnings while the Mets seemed to be searching the forest to find lumber to hit a ball with.

Syndergaard starts for the Mets today and he is 9-5 over 20 games and 19 starts this year pitching 117.1 innings with a 2.45 ERA. In the month of July he has pitched 4 times totaling 23.1 innings with a 2.31 ERA while striking out 29 batters. Last year he held the Rockies to 3 ER over 7.0 innings of work. The Rockies have the following numbers against Thor:

  • Arenado 1-3, HR
  • Blackmon 0-2
  • Descalso 1-3
  • CarGo 0-3
  • Hundley 0-3
  • LeMahieu 1-2, HR
  • Reynolds 1-3

The Mets bats will continue to find themselves against Chad Bettis who is 9-6 over 21 starts and 121.1 innings this year with a 5.19 ERA. He leads the leagues in hits allowed with 142. Things have gotten a bit better for him of late as he has allowed only 8 hits and 3 ER in his last 12.2 innings over two starts. The last time he faced the Mets was back in 2014 where he allowed 4 ER over 2.0 innings. The Mets have the following numbers against him:

  • Walker 2-8
  • De Aza 1-3
  • K Johnson 1-2
  • d’Arnaud 1-2, HR
  • Flores 0-2
  • Granderson 1-1
  • Rivera 1-1

Game Preview: Rockies vs Mets

The Mets lost another tough one last night. Steven Matz didn’t have his best stuff, but he was able to hold the Rockies to 2 runs despite giving up what felt like two dozen hits. It didn’t really matter though as the Mets offense was again no where to be found. Outside of a solo shot by James Loney, the Mets would get people out on base and just leave them there. Then, the Rockies finished the game with a 3 run shot dagger that put any hope to bed for the Mets. Tonight, on Mike Piazza number retirement day, the Mets look to Bartolo Colon to help keep the ship afloat.

Bartolo Colon is 9-5 over 21 games, 20 starts and 115.2 innings with a 3.35 ERA. He is coming off a strong start against the Cardinals where he held them to 1 ER over 7.0 innings while striking out 8. Last year one of his worst starts of the year came against the Rockies as he allowed 7 ER off 3 homers in 3.2 innings of work. The Rockies have the following numbers against Colon:

  • Reynolds 7-19, 2 2B
  • Gonzalez 4-7, 2 HR
  • Raburn 1-7
  • Arenado 3-5, 2B, HR
  • Blackmon 3-6, 2B
  • Descalso 1-6

The Mets bats will try to find themselves against Jorge De La Rosa who is 6-7 over 17 games and 14 starts this year totaling 79.0 innings with a 5.70 ERA. With the exception of one start where he allowed 7 earned runs, 9 total, over 4.0 innings, July has been good to Jorge where he pitched 30.1 innings with a 4.45 ERA. Last year he faced the Mets once allowed 2 ER over 6.0 innings while striking out 7. The Mets have the following numbers against Jorge:

  • Loney 8-18, 2 2B, HR
  • Walker 4-13
  • Reyes 3-10, 2B
  • K Johnson 2-10, 2B
  • Granderson 1-9, HR
  • Rivera 0-9
  • d’Arnaud 1-4
  • Cespedes 0-3

Game Preview: Rockies vs Mets

The Mets are coming off back to back disappointing losses as the offense struggles to get the gear back into the position. But things can change fast. A year ago today is when the Flores trade fell through. So tomorrow will be a year ago to day of one of the worst losses in the 2015 season. After that things changed quickly, so lets hope y’all!

Steven Matz takes the mound tonight. He’s 8-6 over 18 starts and 107.0 innings with a 3.36 ERA. His last time out he picked up his first win since May 25th as he tossed 6.0 scoreless innings against the Marlins in a game the Mets won 3-0. Matz missed the Rockies the first time around this year and didn’t face them last year so tonight will be his first time. No one on the Rockies roster faced Steven as a member of a different team.

The Mets will get a look at Tyler Chatwood tonight who has tossed 103.2 innings over 18 starts with a 9-6 record and a 3.65 ERA. After back to back starts in July where he allowed 11 ER over 8.0 innings, in his last start he allowed only one hit and no runs against the Braves in 5.0 innings (but walked 8 batters). In May he allowed 3 ER against the Mets over 7.0 innings. The Mets have the following numbers against Chatwood:

  • Cabrera 2-7, HR
  • Reyes 2-7, 3B
  • Loney 1-6
  • De Aza 0-4
  • Cespedes 1-3, HR
  • Conforto 1-3
  • Granderson 1-3, HR
  • Lagares 1-3
