Game Preview: Pirates vs Mets

Tyler Pill was the medicine the Mets needed on his first start, so lets hope his second dose is just as good. To quote the SNY Booth, Tyler Pill on his first major league start looked like Dillon Gee at his best. Not overpowering, but worked off-speed and location to keep hitters off balance throughout the game. On the season he is 0-1 over 2 starts and relief appearance allowing 2 runs, 7 hits with 4 walks.  He doesn’t have a win to show for his start thanks to a dropped popup in the infield. His loss actually came from the Pirates in 0.2 innings where he allowed a hit, a walk and a run in the extra inning game last weekend. Pirates have limited exposure to Pill:

  • Cervelli 0-0, BB
  • Freese 1-1
  • McCutchen 0-0, HBP
  • Ngoepe 0-1
  • Polanco 0-1

The Mets bats willd raw Trevor Williams who is 2-3 over 11 games and 5 starts over 36.1 innings with a 5.20 ERA, 4.61 FIP, 1.321 WHIP. After back to back starts being just slightly below average (5.2 IP with 3 ER, 5.0 IP with 3 ER), Williams is coming off of his best start of the season where he held the Diamondbacks to 4 hits and 1 run over 6.0 innings. This will be Trevor Williams first start against the Mets in his career and he has never faced the Mets when they were members of other teams.

Mets Picture of the Day: Syndergaard vs Bumgarner

When I heard that Syndergaard was going to face Bumgarner last season at the start of May (5/1/16), I was there! The game was let and didn’t go so well for Syndergaard and little did we know it would be a preview for the Wild Card game at the end of the season.

Thoooooooorrrrrrrrrr! (vs Bumgarner)

Game Preview: Pirates vs Mets

The Mets and Pirates play game two of their series today as Gsellman takes on Glasnow. If this feels a bit like deja vu, the Mets spent last weekend with the Pirates as well.

Gsellman pitched like a pitcher who didn’t want to leave the rotation last time out and on the season he is 3-3 over 51.2 innings in 12 games and 9 starts with a 5.75 ERA, 4.36 FIP and 1.529 WHIP. In his last start he allowed only 3 hits and 2 walks leading to 2 runs, 1 earned over 7.0 innings of work against the Brewers. He missed the Pirates last weekend, has never faced the Pirates before in his major league career and has never faced any Pirates as members of other teams, so everyone is getting a first look at Robert tonight.

Tyler Glasnow for the Pirates is 2-4 over 45.1 innings and 10 starts this year with a 6.95 ERA, 4.96 FIP and 1.897 WHIP. His last start was against the Mets and it didn’t go so well for Tyler as the Mets got him for 8 hits leading to 5 runs over 5.0 innings, ending a two game stretch of good performances for Tyler (before that he had a blow up against the Diamondbacks). The Mets have the following numbers against Tyler:

  • Bruce 3-3, 2 2B
  • Duda 0-3
  • Granderson 1-3
  • Reyes 1-3
  • Walker 1-3
  • Cabrera 1-2, 2B
  • d’Arnaud 0-2
  • Harvey 1-2
  • Lagares 0-2

Game Preview: Pirates vs Mets

The Mets are coming off a split of a four game set where in the first two games they were cruising and in the last two the offense has completely disappeared. Yesterday was a low scoring affair with the Mets losing 2-1, the lone run coming from a Wilmer Flores homer late in the game.

Matt Harvey gets the nod tonight. He’s 4-3 over 10 games and 56.1 innings with a 4.95 ERA, 5.95 FIP and 1.456 WHIP this year. His last start was against Pittsburgh and it was positive going 6.0 innings allowing 6 hits, 2 walks and only 1 ER. This means in his last two starts and 11.0 innings he’s allowed only 3 ER. The Pirates have the following numbers against him:

  • McCutchen 3-7, HR, BB
  • Polanco 2-7, 3B, HR, BB
  • Freese 2-6
  • Harrison 4-6, 2B
  • Mercer 0-6
  • Cervaelli 0-2, 3 BB
  • Bell 1-3
  • Frazier 0-3

The Mets bats will deal with Gerrit Cole who is 2-5 over 11 starts and 66.2 innings this year with a 3.65 ERA, 4.40 FIP and 1.200 WHIP. His last start was against the Mets where he allowed 10 hits and one walk leading to 4 runs in 5.0 innings. In his last two outings, he has allowed 9 runs over 9.2 innings with 2 walks and 20 hits leading to an OBP of .450. The Mets have the following numbers against him:

  • Bruce 6-20, 2 2B, HR, 2 BB
  • Granderson 2-8, 3B, 2 BB
  • Duda 3-9, 2B, HR
  • Reyes 2-6, 2B
  • R Rivera 0-4
  • Cabrera 0-3
  • Conforto 1-3
  • d’Arnaud 3-3, 2B, HR
  • Flores 1-3

Mets Picture of the Day: Matz in Milwaukee

Last year I took a weekend trip with The 7 Line to see some games. The day after the official trip, I made a last minute decision to go back, and see the Mets again before heading back home. Enjoy! (Hopefully you’ll enjoy this photo more than I enjoyed this game, we didn’t do so well).

Eh, Let's try this again before flying home. #MilwaukeeInvasion #OrangeAndBlueCrew #OnlyMetFanInMySection

Game Preview: Brewers vs Mets

After winning the first two games of the series, the Mets hit a bump in the road last night as deGrom had a fairly terrible start and the Mets lost 7-1. They can still win the series today as the Mets and Brewers play a day, get away game in New York.

Wheeler will take the mound for the Mets today. He is 3-2 over 9 starts and 49.1 innings with a 3.83 ERA, 4.26 FIP and 1.318 WHIP this season. In his last 5 starts he is 2-0 allowing 25 hits and 16 walks in 27.2 innings with a 2.60 ERA. He missed the Brewers last time around this month and only one Brewer has seen him in a major league game, Sogard, who is 1-1 with a walk.

The Mets bats draw Chase Anderson who is 3-1 over 10 starts and 55.2 innings of work this year with a 3.72 ERA, 3.63 FIP and 1.347 WHIP. By ERA and FIP he is, by far, having his best season so far (his WHIP is right about his career number). After two poor starts where he allowed 13 hits and 7 walks over 9.1 innings leading to 10 runs, Sogard had his best start of the season against the Diamondbacks where he allowed 1 hit and 3 walks over 7.0 innings with no runs and 11 K’s. He faced the Mets just over a year ago where he allowed 4 hits and 2 walks in 5.0 innings of work leading to 3 runs. The Mets have the following numbers against Anderson:

  • Bruce 1-11, HR, BB
  • Granderson 2-7, 2 BB
  • R Rivera 1-5, 2 BB
  • Walker 1-6, BB
  • Cabrera 1-4, BB
  • Reyes 2-5, BB
  • Duda 1-5, HR
  • Lagares 3-5, HR

Game Preview: Brewers vs Mets

The Mets and Brewers play game three of their four game set tonight as the Mets look to make it 3 straight against the Brew Crew. If you missed yesterday’s game, Tyler Pill had a great start. To quote the SNY booth, Pill looked like Dillon Gee did when Dillon Gee was good. At one point the Mets had a 4-1 lead, thanks to a two run homer from Duda. Things fell apart as Blevins allowed a bases loaded walk and then Cabrera dropped a fly ball in the infield allowing two runs to score. The baseball gods showed the Mets pity and a base running blunder by the Brewers allowed the score to be 4-4 instead of 5-4. We all know the one thing the Mets bullpen needs is more work and they got it as the game lasted through 12 until Bruce walked the Mets off.

Jacob deGrom will look to give the bullpen some time off. On the season he is 4-1 over 10 starts and 64.0 innings with a 3.23 ERA, 3.14 FIP and 1.250 WHIP. He has returned to form in his last two starts going 2-0, allowing 10 hits and 4 walks with only 1 run in 15.1 innings of work while striking out 19. Before this streak, he faced the Brewers where he allowed 8 hit sand a walk over 6.0 innings leading to 4 runs. The Brewers have the following numbers against Jacob:

  • Perez 2-6, 2 2B
  • Shaw 1-5, BB
  • Villar 2-5, 2B, BB
  • Arcia 1-3
  • Broxton 1-4, HR
  • Thames 1-3, 2 K
  • Franklin 0-2

The Mets bats will take a crack at Junior Guerra who is 0-0 in his first two two starts of the season pitching 8.2 innings allowing 4 hits and 3 walks leading to 3 runs (3.12 ERA, 5.33 FIP, 0.808 WHIP). His numbers seem a bit off because his first start on April 3rd lasted all of 3 innings before being removed from injury. Last week was his return to the majors where he allowed 1 run over 5.2 innings. Last season he went 9-3 over 20 starts and 121.2 innings for the Brewers with a 2.81 ERA, 3.70 FIP, 1.126 WHIP. In one start against the Mets last year he allowed 5 hits and 3 walks over 6.2 innings leading to 1 run. The Mets have the following numbers against Junior:

  • Bruce 0-3
  • Cabrera 0-3
  • Flores 1-3
  • Granderson 1-1, 2 BB
  • R Rivera 0-1

I’m primarily a physics teacher, then a Mets fan. So in July I try to go to some day games and they can be a bit empty. This picture was taken 7/6/16.
