Game Preview: Braves vs Mets, Game 1

Last night was rough – the Braves took an early 8-0 lead and never looked back. For the Mets, the game felt unlucky. Walker had a bizarre injury that seemed to impact his performance, the Braves robbed the Mets of an early two run homer, there were base running mistakes, etc. The Mets were able to claw back a lot in the game and make the final score 9-6.

Today is an important day for the Mets, they really need to split the doubleheader (at least). David Peterson will get the first attempt of making that a reality. Peterson has pitched in 17 games and 73 2/3 innings this year with a 3.54 ERA, 4.04 FIP, 1.290 WHIP and a 113 ERA+. Peterson has been more effective as a starter than as a reliever this year (albeit, a small sample size as a reliever). Over 13 starts (65 2/3 innings) he has a 3.43 ERA and 1.234 WHIP. Over four relief outings (8 innings) he has a 4.50 ERA and a 1.750 WHIP. This is skewed a bit in his outing where he allowed a two run homer and recorded only one out.

In his one start against the Braves this year he allowed four runs, three earned, from four hits and three walks over five innings of work. The Braves have the following career numbers against him:

The Braves will send out one of their trade deadline acquisitions, Jake Odorizzi, this afternoon. The Braves received Jake from the Astros for Will Smith. Over 12 starts and 60 innings this year, Jake has a 3.75 ERA, 3.61 FIP, 1.1150 WHIP and a 102 ERA+. After two less than stellar starts in mid-July (10 1/3 innings, nine earned runs), Jake bounced back in his last start holding the Mariners to two hits and no runs over seven innings.
