Game Preview: Cubs vs Mets

Last night was rough. Syndergaard had a terrible start to the game and the Mets were down 10-1 by the end of the third inning. But then the magic bubbled up again and the Mets were able to make it close, but still fell 10-7. Tonight becomes a crucial salvage game, there’s a huge difference falling 1 additional game behind the team you’re trailing and falling 3 additional games back. Let’s make it happen Mets!

Jacob deGrom takes the mound for the Mets tonight. He is 8-7 over 26 games and 162.0 innings with a 2.56 ERA, 2.67 FIP, 1.037 WHIP and 160 ERA+. He’s also currently leading the league in strikeouts at 207. Jacob is coming off of a strong start where he held the Braves to 1 run over 7.0 innings and hit a homer while striking out 13 batters. Since May 22nd he has pitched 17 games and 110 innings with a 1.88 ERA and opponents are hitting a .555 OPSagainst him. Since July 19th he has pitched 7 games and 47.0 innings with a 0.96 ERA while opponents are posting a .443 OPS against him. Earlier this year against the Cubs he allowed 2 runs off 8 hits in 6.0 innings while striking out 9. The Cubs have the following numbers against him:

The Mets bats will get a look at Jon Lester who is 10-9 over 25 starts and 138.1 innings this year with a 4.49 ERA, 4.25 FIP, 1.446 WHIP and 101 ERA+. He’s coming off a rough start against the Nationals where hea llowed 6 runs off 9 hits in 4.1 innings. Since July 13th he has pitched 44.0 innings across 8 starts with a 6.14 ERA, and those stats include two starts where he combined for 13 shutout innings.
