Game Preview: Mets @ Marlins

The Mets go for their sixth win a row and a three game sweep this afternoon against the Marlins.

The Mets secured the series victory against the Marlins yesterday behind a strong start from Carlos Carrasco, a three-hit game from Francisco Lindor and the return of Seth Lugo who locked things down to preserve the 4-0 score in the 9th innings.

The Mets will call on Taijuan Walker today to close out the series in Miami! Over 17 games and 97 2/3 innings, Walker has a 2.67 ERA, 3.26 FIP, 1.106 WHIP and a 150 ERA+. Over his last eight starts he has pitched 51 innings with a 2.12 ERA and 2.71 FIP. He had some bumps in his last start against the Yankees in the first inning, allowing back to back homers, but he settled in after that and allowed only one more run over five innings of work.

This will be Walker’s fourth start against the Marlins this season. Over 19 2/3 innings this season against the Marlins, he’s allowed four runs from 13 hits and four walks while striking out 21 batters (1.83 ERA). The Marlins have the following numbers against him:

Lopez had a difficult start back on July 21st where he allowed five runs over five innings from five hits and three walks against the Rangers. He bounced back in his last start against the Reds, holding them to only one run on two hits over seven innings while striking out 11.

In Pablo’s first start against the Mets this year he allowed seven runs, six earned, over 5 1/3 innings from eight hits and a walk. In his last start against the Mets on July 8th, he allowed only one run from four hits and a walk over five innings. The Mets have the following career numbers against him:

The Mets will try to take the series from the Marlins tonight after yesterday’s come back win! The Mets were down early and behind Starling Marte, they were able to tie it back up to four runs each until Brandon Nimmo hit a go-ahead homer late in the game. Edwin Díaz shut the door in the ninth!

Carlos Carrasco is on the mound tonight as the Mets attempt their fifth win in a row. Over 19 games and 104 innings, Carrasco has a 4.07 ERA, 3.53 FIP, 1.346 WHIP and a 98 ERA+. Carrasco’s last start kicked off the current winning streak, as he shutout the Padres over five innings. In July he has made four starts, totaling 22 1/3 innings, allowing only three runs from 24 hits and seven walks while striking out 20 batters (1.21 ERA, 2.85 FIP).

The Mets start off their weekend series with the Marlins with a face-off against one of the best pitchers this season – Sandy Alcantara.

The Mets are coming into Miami on a three game win streak and a two game sweep of the Yankees, including a walk-off win on Wednesday. There was a ton of energy in Queens the last two nights. It feels like a safe assumption that the energy level, at least from the fans in attendance, this weekend will be quite different.

Chris Bassitt gets the start for the Mets. Over 18 games and 109 innings, Bassitt has a 3.72 ERA, 3.74 FIP, 1.101 WHIP and a 108 ERA+. In his last six starts (40 2/3 innings) Bassitt has allowed only 11 runs from 29 hits and five walks while striking out 41 batters leading to a 2.43 ERA and 2.83 FIP. This stretch includes back to back to back starts against the Marlins where he posted a 3.66 ERA from eight runs over 19 2/3 innings. (Three of those runs came when Bassitt was pulled out of a game with the bases loaded and the next pitcher immediately gave up a grand slam). The Marlins have the following numbers against Chris:

  • Avisail Garcia 1-9
  • Bryan De La Cruz 5-7, 3 2B, HR, BB, K
  • Miguel Rojas 3-8, K
  • Jacob Stallings 1-8, 3 K

  • Willians Astudillo 0-6
  • Jesus Aguilar 2-6, K
  • Jon Berti 0-5, BB, 2 K
  • Jesus Sanchez 1-6, HR, 2 K

The Mets bats will get another look at Sandy Alcantara this evening. He’s made 20 starts this season, tossing a league leading 144 1/3 innings including two complete games. He has a 1.81 ERA (league leading), 2.78 FIP, 0.901 WHIP and a 226 ERA+ (league leading).

Sandy had a rough start against the Mets back on June 24th where he allowed five runs, four earned from six hits and no walks over seven innings. Since then he has pitched 38 innings over five starts with a 1.42 ERA and 2.12 FIP. That includes a start against the Mets where he shut the Mets out over seven innings. The Mets have the following numbers against him:

  • Pete Alonso 5-27, 3 2B, HR, BB, 7 K
  • Jeff McNeil 8-28, 2B, HR, 3 BB, 3 K

The Mets go for the two-game sweep tonight at Citi Field against the Yankees!

Last night was the first time in the history of the Subway Series that both teams each hit two homers in the first inning of the game. The Yankees tried to drain the life out of stadium in the first inning with two solo shots, the Mets responded with four runs in the bottom of the first. Taijuan Walker battled back and turned in six good innings against one of the best offenses in baseball and the Edwin Díaz recorded a four out save.

All of last night’s energy now gets passed to the most intense pitcher on the Mets staff – Max Scherzer. Scherzer has made 12 starts and pitched 75 innings this year with a 2.28 ERA, 2.48 FIP, 0.893 WHIP and a 176 ERA+. The Mets and Yankees matchup in Queens this evening for the first Subway Series of the year. The Yankees are first in the AL East. The Mets are first in the NL East. It’s the second half of the season. New York City is always better when both the Mets and the Yankees are good and finally these two teams get to face-off tonight!

The Yankees have powered through opponents this season with a +200 run differential and an expected win loss record (69-28) that is even better than their actual (66-31). That being said, the Yankees are 5-5 over their last 10 games.

The Mets offense finally woke up late in the last game of the Padres series, scoring eight runs. The Mets have a run differential of +82 on the season, the best in the NL East.

Taijuan Walker gets the start for the Mets tonight. Over 16 games and 91 2/3 innings this season he has recorded a 2.55 ERA, 2.98 FIP, 1.091 WHIP and a 157 ERA+. Game Preview: Padres vs Mets

The Mets try to stop a three game slide and will try to avoid being swept tonight as they take on the Padres for ESPN Sunday night baseball.

The Mets offense is mired in a team wide slump. Despite collecting eight hits and three walks last night, the Mets could only push one run across the plate. The Mets pitching has been excellent – hopefully the bats will come around.

The Mets bats will have probably their toughest assignment of the series this evening as they take on Joe Musgrove. Over 16 starts and 104 innings pitched, Musgrove has a 2.42 ERA, 3.09 FIP, 0.971 WHIP and a 157 ERA+. Musgrove has hit a few bumps in his last couple of starts. Last time out he allowed five runs from nine hits in five innings against the Rockies. Back on June 23rd he allowed six runs from from seven hits against the Phillies. (Between those two starts he allowed three runs over 14 innings). He also allowed five homers between June 16th and June 30th (and only four homers across all other starts). The Mets have the following numbers against Musgrove:

  • Francisco Lindor 5-14, 2 2B, 2 HR, BB, 6 K
  • Daniel Vogelbach 0-7, BB, 4 K
  • Eduardo Escobar 2-8, HR, 2 K
  • Starling Marte 2-6
  • Jeff McNeil 1-5, 2B, K
  • Pete Alonso 2-6, 2 K
  • Luis Guillorme 2-5, K
  • Michael Perez 0-4, BB, 2 K
  • Travis Jankowski 1-3, BB
  • Brandon Nimmo 0-3

Carlos Carrasco will make his first start of the second half this evening. Over his first 18 starts and 99 innings he has a 4.27 ERA, 3.51 FIP, 1.333 WHIP and a 93 ERA+. Over his last three starts he has allowed only three runs over 17 1/3 innings from 18 hits and five walks while striking out 19 batters. This translates into a 1.56 ERA and 2.54 FIP.

Against the Padres earlier this season Carrasco allowed only two runs from five hits over seven innings. That was the only start this season where he reached ten strikeouts. The Padres have the following numbers against him:

  • Eric Hosmer 8-34, 2 2B, 3B, 4 BB, 9 K
  • Manny Machado 2-10, 2 BB, 2 K
  • Jorge Alfaro 2-10, 2B, BB, 3 K
  • Nomar Mazara 4-10, 2 2B, 3 K
  • Jurickson Profar 5-8, 2B, HR, BB, K
  • Jake Cronenworth 0-3, 3 K
  • Ha-Seong Kim 1-3, K

Game Preview: Padres vs Mets

The Mets offense could not get anything going last night as the Mets lost the Opener of the Series to the Padres 4-1.

Right before the game though the Mets made their first big trade, acquiring David Vogelbach from the Pirates. The Mets DH situation this season has been miserable against right handed pitching which is where Vogelbach excels. Blake Snell, pitching for the Padres tonight, is a lefty. Tomorrow night’s starter is a righty though!

Chris Bassitt will make his 18th start of the season tonight. Over his 102 innings in the first half of the season, Bassitt posted a 3.79 ERA, 3.83 FIP, 1.137 WHIP and a 106 ERA+. In his last five starts and 33 2/3 innings he has a 2.41 ERA and 2.94 FIP from 25 hits, nine runs while striking out 30 batters. He is coming off of a big game against the Braves where he held them to one run over six innings in a game the Mets won 7-6.

His start against the Padres this season was pretty terrible, and Bassitt is probably itching for revenge. He allowed seven runs from eight hits and two walks over 3 1/3 innings. The Padres have the following career numbers against Bassitt:

  • Eric Hosmer 2-11, 2B, K
  • Manny Machado 2-9, 2B, 2 K
  • Nomar Masara 2-8, BB, 3 K
  • Jake Cronenworth 2-3, 2B
  • Jurickson Profar 1-2, BB
  • Jorge Alfaro 1-2, K
  • Trent Grisham 0-1, BB
  • Luke Voit 1-2, K

Blake Snell has made ten starts totaling 50 innings this season with a 5.22 ERA, 3.70 FIP, 1.480 WHIP and a 73 ERA+. He started July off strong with back to back starts where he allowed a combined two runs from seven hits over 11 innings while striking out 23 batters. In his last start before the All-Star break he took a step backwards allowing five runs from four hits and six walks over 3 2/3 innings in Colorado.

Snell faced the Mets back on June 6th and allowed five runs, four earned, from seven hits and three walks over four innings. The Mets have the following career numbers against him:

  • Francisco Lindor 3-23, 2B, 4 K
  • Mark Canha 4-10, 2B, 2 BB, 2 K
  • Starling Marte 5-12, 2B, HR, 2 K
  • Pete Alonso 1-7, HR, 3 BB
  • Eduardo Escobar 2-10, 2B, 3 K
  • Brandon Nimmo 2-6, 2B, BB, K
  • Jeff McNeil 2-5, K
  • Travis Jankowski 1-2, K
