Mets Breakfast: Walk Off Edition

Some quick hits to go with your Saturday morning Texas Toast:

1) The Mets won the game on a walk off homer from Rod Barajas last night. Barajas, who was just supposed to be a defensive catcher after the Mets “lost out” on Bengi Molina has been on fire in the last week or so as he now had 9 homers on the season, compared to 12 all catches combined had on the team last year.

2) Additional note, that was Barajas' second big blast of the night.

3) Davis hit two bombs last night to get his season total to 3. Its hard not to be get high hopes for Ike.

4) The old Mets would have crumbled after blowing the save in the top of the ninth, but not these Mets.

5) Side Note: I woke this morning to more news about Jamie Moyer being old. In other words, today is going to be completely normal.

Game Preview: Giants vs Mets

The Mets return home to face the the first place Giants tonight in an interesting battle. The Giants are known for the pitching this year which has been spot on. The Mets on the other hand will be looking for a much better start out of Pelfrey who really struggled in his last start, uncharacteristic of his season so far. It will also be the first time that Molina plays in New York against the team that supposedly really wanted to sign him.

Pelfrey is 4-1 on the season with a 2.40 ERA. He has been amazing this season with the exception of his last start thanks to his nice mix of pitches and location abilities. Pelfrey faced the Giants twice last season and pitched 13.1 innings with an 0-1 record. During those two games he allowed only 4 runs, or had an ERA of 2.70. The Giants have these numbers against Big Pelf:

Roward 2-9
Lewis 1-6, 2B
Molina 2-5
Huff 2-5

The Mets will have to contend with Sanchez who is 2-2 with a 2.48 this season. Last year, he didn't recieve any decisions in two games against the Mets where he allowed 6 ER over 12.2 innings with an ERA of 4.26. The Mets were able to put up these numbers against Sanchez over his career:

Castillo 2-10
Wright 3-7
Francoeur 2-8
Reyes 1-6, 2B
Pagan 1-4, 2B

Lets Go Mets!

The Wall Street Journal Seperates the Yankee Fans from the Mets Fans

Great article today in Wall Street as a team of, well I'm not sure what title they hold, found statistical differences between Mets fans and Yankee fans. According their research, which as you have to remember with statistics, it shows correlation not causation, says that Mets fans are more likely to follow their teams more closely. This statement was based off of that Mets fans on average bet more on sports and listen to a substantial amount of talk radio.

The point the article drives home though is that Mets fans are more likely to drink beer than Yankees fans. I thought that was an interesting poing, and I am also wondering if any Yankee blogs out there that also read this article are going to say “Haha, thats because their team collapses!”

The Wall Street Journal offers a 13 question set to see if you are Yankee Fan or a Mets fan. I took and guess what, apparently I am a Yankee fan….why?

1) I am a worrier. Oops, thats in my genes.
2) I don't own a dog.
3) I'm not married (hellooooo ladies).
4) I don't bet on Sports.

Factors that make me a Mets fan:

1) I don't own a Mac
2) I drink beer.
3) I listen to Sports Radio
4) I'm messy.

Obvisously I am not a Yankee fan, but this was still an interesting article to read.

You See Me? Hi Hater. (MLB Players Addition)

Matt Cerrone at Metsblog posted a poll via ESPN where players (100 of them) voted in a series of categories including best player and most overated players. No Mets made in the best player list but check out the list of overated:

1) Chamberlain
2) Arod
3) Swisher
4) Wright, Jeter, Manny

Cerrone pointed out an interesting observation. Notice how many of these players are in New York. Also Jeter and Arod made the best player list. But back to main point, look how many are in New York. I think there are some players out there sipping on haterade.

Look at that list, objectively, these players are all players you want on a team. Well maybe not Swisher. But Jeter, Arod, Wright? These guys are not overated. There is a lot of news on these guys, so there could be an overated perception. But do you think of these guys when you hear overated? I don't. I think of Brad Lidge, GMJ, Sheets, etc.

I really wanted to embed this video, but Maino has removed that. There's some harsh language (its an explicit song, so watch yourself).

Mets Breakfast

Some quick hits to go with your Friday morning bowl of Cheerios:

1) The Phillies won again yesterday, giving them a 2.0 game lead in the division. The Nationals won yesterday so they are now tied with with the Mets for second place in the division.

2) Did you know Flores (18) is hitting .311 in the minors? I didn't until yesterday when that was posted on Metsblog, but I'm not surprised about his success.

3) Strasburg makes his his Triple A debut tonight. Speculation is already starting that June 4-6 might be his major league debut (against the Reds).

4) Not baseball related: ESPNNewYork.com has a countdown for NBA free agency and labeled it “LeBron Watch”

Mets Breakfast

Some quick hits to go with your Thursday morning hangover*:

1) The Mets dropped another road series yesterday losing in extras for the second time in three games making a 2-4 road trip. Once again though, at least for the last three games, these Mets showed fight. I know that showing fight isn't always shown in the standings, but showing fight eventually leads to wins. It lead the Mets to an 8 game stretch before, and hopefully it will again soon.

2) After yesterday's slate of games were finished, baseball had its first 20 game winner (Rays) and 21 game loser (Orioles). Top to bottom, that division (AL East) is now separated by 13.5 games).

3) Kevin Millar is returning the American Association of Baseball. He signed a contract to return to the St. Paul Saints.

4) The Mets have an off day today.

* Happy Day After Cinco De Mayo.

Game Preview: Mets @ Reds

The Mets wrap up their three game set with an early afternoon rubber game with the Reds. Yesterday the Mets snapped their losing streak in style as Rod Barajas hit a go ahead solo shot in the top of the ninth. In today's match up, the Mets will turn Niese to win while the Reds will turn to Cueto.

Niese (1-1, 3.10) has become a threat over the last several games. He is starting to mix his pitches, complinting his devestating curveball with a nice cutter. Niese in his short career has never faced the Reds and has never faced any Reds batters, so he will be a complete mystery to them.

Cueto has a 1-1 record and a 5.33 ERA on the season and in the last three games he has the same record and a 5.63 ERA. He faced the Mets once last year and he allowed 4 ER in 5 IP. The Mets have these numbers on him throughout his career:

Wright 2-8
Bay 2-6, 2B
Castillo 3-5
Francoeur 2-5, 2B
Tatis 2-3, HR

Mets Breakfast

Some quick hits to go with your Wednesday morning Corona*:

1) John Maine had an effective start last night as the Mets ended their three game slide. The game featured two New York homers, one by David Wright (6) and the other by Barajas (7).

2) Barajas has been crazy over the past 5 games with four homers. His bat is proving to be a challenge. I think batting him 8th is also helping his cause. He doesn't really hit the ball on the ground at all, and doesn't really get hits, he just is really good at hitting great homers. Being in the 8th spot means that he is getting some pitches to hit and pitchers are trying to just get things by him.

3) Strasburg will make his Triple A debut on Friday.

4) I didn't watch the game last night, but I did catch the last inning on the radio. Is it just me, or does it seem like there is a sizable portion of Mets fans out in Cinncy?

* Happy Cinco De Mayo

Game Recap: Stop The Slide

(Mets Merized Online)

The Mets stopped their three game slide tonight thanks to Rod Barajas. Well its thanks to more than just Barajas but going into the 8th inning the Mets had a two run lead, which was then given up by Nieve. When it seemed like the Reds were getting momentum back, spurred by two quick outs by the Mets in the top of the ninth, Barajas took the the Reds deep and gave the Mets the go ahead run. Here are some observations from the game:

1) The Mets opened the game with three consecutive hits.
2) Wright has slowly breaking out of a mid April slump with another homer, three in the last week.
3) Barajas now has 7 homers on the season. Mets catchers had a combined 12 homers last season.
4) Maine only allowed 1 ER tonight as he now has two back to back good starts. Hopefully this trend continues.
5) Reyes continues to raise his BA with another 2-4 game, with a RBI single and a double in tonight's game.
