Mets Breakfast

Some quick hits to go with your Monday morning Co-Co Puffs:

1) The Mets capped off three days straight of good pitching with a great outing by Santana last night as he helped lead the Mets to a series win over the Yankees.

2) Once again, by the end of the game, the Mets had to make it interesting but Krod was able to rise from the mess caused by himself and Igarashi and close out the game.

3) Jason Bay! After a 4 hit, 3 run night, he tripled the amount of homers he had on the season by knocking in two homers, 3 RBI, and added a walk and hit by pitch.

4) In his last four games, Wright has 7 RBI.

Game Preview: Yankees vs Mets

We have all heard the expression before, “tailor made double play ball” but what a “tailor made national broadcast game” that ESPN will be getting tonight. They have one of the more notable series in Interleague play, the Subway Series, and for this game they have the two biggest names in the rotation going at each other in CC Sabathia and Johan Santana.

Santana (3-2, 3.72 ERA) has been like the Santana of old in his last two starts as he has pitched 14.0 innings with a 1.29 ERA. In his last three starts, he has made through the seventh inning or beyond, which is what the bullpen of this team really needs. What the team will really like though is if he doesn't repeat his performance from last year. Last season Santana went out there, pitched 3 innings and allowed 9 ER. The Yankees have these stats against Santana lifetime:

Jeter 11-26, 4 2B, HR
Arod 5-23, 2 HR
Tex 6-26, 2B, HR
Cano 7-17

CC (4-2, 3.43) is coming off his best start in a while where he went 7 innings and allowed one run. In his last three starts (and this shows how much he has been struggling lately) he has pitched 17.2 innings allowing 10 ER. Actually, when you go through his game log, he doesn't have many averages games. He has either been brilliant or has been terrible. He made one start against last year where he picked up the win in 7 innings of work allowing 1 ER. The Mets have these numbers against him:

Barajas 8-19, 2 2B, 3 HR
Bay 1-9
Francoeur 2-7
Cora 0-3
Wright 0-3

Game Preview: Yankees vs Mets

The Mets will play another game with the Yankees tonight as they try to do something that has been done once this year: get the Yankees to lose a game that Phil Hughes has started. Last night's game featured great pitching by both sides and also a real lackluster night at the plate. If the Mets want to win tonight, they will have to channel that team that played Thursday night in Washnington.

Mike Pelfrey (5-1, 3.02) will get the nod for the Mets tonight as he will try to build off of his last start where he pitched for 7.2 innings and allowed only 2 ER. Last year he faced the Yankees once picking up the loss in 5 innings of work allowing 2 ER, 4 R total. The Yankees have these career numbers agianst Big Pelf:

Tex 4-13, 2B
Winn 1-10, 2B
Cano 1-6
Arod 2-4

The Mets batters will have figure out Phil Hughes, who has been one of the tougher starters in the rotation for the Yankees this year. He has made 7 starts, getting the winning decision in 5 of them, not picking up any losing decisions and the Yankees have gone on to win 6 of those 7 starts. Overall he has pitched 44 innings this year and has an ERA of 2.25. Last season he pitched 2.1 scoreless innings agianst the Amazins. The Mets have been able to put these numbers on Hughes:

Bay 1-6
Barajas 0-2
Castillo 0-1

In other words these current Mets really have not seen much of Hughes at all. It will be interesting to see how the Amazin's bounce back tonight. Lets go Mets!

Mets Breakfast

Some quick hits to go with your Saturday morning Fried Egg:

1) Takahashi was fantastic last night. However the bats went cold and the Mets lost the game 2-1. Figures, another close loss (how frustrating!).

2) Murphy went 2-3 in a rehab start last night including a homer while he played at first base. Later in the week they are going to try him at other bases, hopefully including second, so we can get some pop back in our lineup.

3) Oswalt requested a trade, but do we have enough to get him? Would he want to come here?

4) Maine's on the DL.

Game Preview: Yankees vs Mets

Its Interleague Preview weekend (the lovely teaser weekend for the full event in June) and the Mets will kick things off taking on the Bombers from the Bronx. The Mets have about million story lines flying into this weekend focusing around the looming doom and gloom that Jerry could be facing soon. So once again the Mets find themselves in a position where a very good weekend of ball could make all of these story lines evaporate.

The Mets will also be trying out Takahashi tonight to elliviate the rotation. Takahashi is 3-1 on the season with a 3.12 ERA and thanks to the sometimes erratic rotation the Mets have had this year, he has had his opportunities to stretch his arm out. When Takahashi is successful, he is hitting the corners and getting players striking out looking. However at times he has struggled with locating his pitchers. So far he has 14 BB and 33 K in 26 innings while giving up 9 runs. But when you take out his last outing, his numbers look much better. In 23 innings, he has only 10 BB, 29 K and an ERA of 2.74. Since this is Takahashi's rookie season, there are 0 Yankees with MLB AB's against him.

The Mets will draw the struggling pitcher in the Yankees rotation tonight as they take on Javier Vazquez (2-4, 8.01 ERA). The Mets were also fairly effective against him last season as he pitched 13.2 innings against the Amazins with a 1-1 record and a 4.61 ERA. The bats were actually working last night in Washington, however it has been a while that the Mets have been able to put together two nice, complete games back to back where the bats were very effective. They will need to take advantage of Vazquez tonight. The Mets have these career numbers against Javier:

Cora 8-21, 2B
Reyes 3-13, 3B
Bay 2-12
Wright 3-8, 2B, HR
Francoeur 2-5, HR

Interleague Play 2010 Weekend Preview

Its almost the end of May which brings with it the Interleague Play preview weekend. Here, teams will play teams from other leagues just for the weekend, as taste of what will happen in June. Looking through the schedule for this weekend, it feels a bit strange. The only part of interleague that most fans like (myself included) are the regional matchups. However, this weekend, some of the normal regional matchus are not occuring. The reasoing, at least from the MLB PR machine, is that they want to get teams into unusual places. Anyway here are the matches for this weekend:

New York @ New York (NL) [Subway Series]
Baltimore @ Washington [Battle of the Beltway]
Boston @ Philly [Battle of Which City Is Hated More]
Cinncinnatti @ Cleveland [Battle Ohio]
Chicago (NL) @ Texas [But Chicago/Chicago is fun to watch….]
Tampa Bay @ Houston [But Texas/Houston….that state loves Baseball]
Colorado @ Kansas City [Well KC usually is in the I-70 series, you can get to Colorado via I-70]
Florida @ Chicago (AL) [what?]
Brewers @ Minnesota [Makes Sense]
LA (AL) @ St. Louis [?]
Toronoto @ Arizona [Insert Anti Arizona Immigration Law Joke Here]
San Fran @ Oakland [Bay Bridge Battle]
Detroit @ LA (NL) [?]
San Diego @ Seattle

So out of the above, obviously I will be most interested in the Subway Series, but thats because I'm a Mets fan, and actually the series is important for both teams to make a statement. The Battle of the Beltways should be more interesting as it will be the first time the Nationals, as a good team, plays the Orioles. A rivalry might actually exist this year.

For the most part though, it just feels like a normal baseball weekend.

My Night as a Mets Fan at Nationals Park

Ever since the Nationals have moved down to DC, I have gone to see the Amazin's play. This season was no different. Actually it was different for a few reasons. First, personally, it has been a really long time, like probably 6 or 7 years, that I didn't attend a live baseball game until almost the end of May. Second, it didn't feel like there were as many Mets fans as their usually are in DC last night. That's probably a combination though of the Nationals doing well, the Mets not so much, and for this being a two game set in the middle of the week really right before Summer.

Anyway one of the reasons we watch baseball is every game you see something different. That was the case last night. Here are my thoughts/encounters on my journey into Nat Down:

Getting off the Subway before purchasing tickets

1) One of the Nationals' Mascots is Teddy Roosevelt, he tried to tell myself and a friend that we were not welcomed because of our Mets Jerseys
2) While in line for tickets, I saw a Nats fan in an Authentic Lastings Milledge Jersey….oooh what a waste of money.
3) The area directly around the ballpark has been under construction for a while now and there are empty lots that say that buildings are coming in 2009. Well its 2010 now…..

Before Batting Practice

1) The Nationals, like last year, are selling Strasburg Jerseys….he's not in the majors yet.
2) They are also selling Wang Jerseys….also not here yet.
3) They are also selling Mets and Braves Jerseys….now I'm just lost

Batting Practice

1) Oh hey, Strawberry is by the cage.
2) Carter and Davis put on a show. Once they got warmed up they were each launching balls to the deepest part of the ball park. It was pretty amazing to watch.
3) The group of Mets fans that I was with starting cheering for Kevin Burkhardt. He turned around and waved. People then started to shout for him to tell Hernandez to not fall asleep tonight
4) When the team came out for final warm ups, one fan had huge sign for Davis to sign a ball, so he came over to sign some autographs. One fan (4, maybe 5 years old) handed him a Nationals hat (give away last night), and as Davis signed it he said, “Hey, I'm not on Washington!”

During the Game

1) I didn't see Maine warmup, but right before he starting pitching, something seemed off.
2) Zimmerman came up to bat to Chillin by Wale. I approve.
3) The seat upgrade actually occured in our section
4) If you have been reading this site over the years, you know I have a lot of problems with the Nationals New Ballpark. Mainly I'm confused by its micture of themes and lack of DC centrism (they honor players on other teams). By the fifth inning I figured out something I like about it. Because of height of the buildings in DC, and the placement of the ball park, you really can see over all of DC, which is really nice.
5) There were a lot of Nats at the Nats game (a shameless pun I had to make during the bottom of the fifth).
6) I started to fall asleep in the 8th. Mets pitchers consistently not throwing strikes, well its like counting sheep for me.
7) The Mets seemed to throw the Rosin bag at eachother after the game, it was fun to watch.

After the Game

1) I found someone else wearing an Edgar Alfonzo Jersey, so I'm not the only one who still does that.
2) I forgot how much growing up going to games at Camden Yards* has spoiled me. When leaving Camden Yards, there is a lightrail station right there, and two Subway stations. So traffic splits up easily (plus when you don't have fans…..). All the fans here going to the same subway stop was pretty hectec (Something that I experience every time I go to Nationals games)

And that was my night!

* Since I grew up in Baltimore, when the family would go see the Mets, we would have to drive up to New York, so I never got to experience the Shea Stadium Subway experience. Even with the wait at Nationals Park for the train, it is still a much better option than driving to the park, if you are thinking of seeing the Mets in Washington any time soon.

Mets Breakfast

Some quick hits to go with your Friday morning Chocolate Doughnut:

1) I was at last night's Mets game. My full report of experiences will be posted later today (and I had good amount of notable experiences, or at least enough to exploit for a full blog article).

2) Last night's game was loooooong. I have never fallen asleep during a game before, but I came close to it during the 8th inning before the Nationals started to score runs.

3) How about that offense last night? The heart of the order went 7-14 and Ike Davis as the cleanup hitter had a huge night as he went 3-5 and really hit every ball hard out there.

4) Wright was the David Wright of old last night.

5) Maine was well, I have no idea.

Game Preview: Mets @ Nationals

The Mets end their two game set with the Nationals tonight as they try to avoid the two game sweep. Last night was a rough night for the Mets as they pulled two feats (by Pagan basically – inside the park homer and a triple play) but still ended up losing the game. Tonight the Mets will try to ralley behind Maine and handle the Nationals starter, Atilano.

Maine (1-3, 6.13) slipped up in his last outing. Prior to that, he was really starting to come around but he had some problems against the Marlins as he allowed 6 ER over 5 innings. He faced the Nationals two starts ago where he pitched 6 innings, allowed 2 ER and struck out 5 as the Mets lost anyway. The Nationals have these numbers against the Maine event:

Zimmerman 7-37, 2 2B, 2 HR
Dunn 2-12, HR
Guzman 0-13
Willingham 2-13

Atilano was Maine's opponent last time these teams faced eachother and he turned out a great performance lasting 5 innings keeping the Mets scoreless. His other two starts in his last three were not as pretty as his ERA over his last three games is 5.17. Hopefully now the Mets have seen him once, they will be able to handle him better tonight. The Mets have these numbers against Atilano:

Bay 1-2, BB
Pagan 1-3
Reyes 1-3
Barajas 1-2, 2B
Wright 1-3
