Game Preview: Diamondbacks vs Mets

The Mets start a series with the Diamondbacks tonight fresh off dropping a series with the Nationals. Yesterday the wheels (really no pun intended, I say this a lot) fell off for the Mets as they just couldn’t get anything positive going. The game ended with Recker pitching, which is, well a white flag. Anyway, Shaun Marcum pitches for the Mets tonight as he faces Wade Miley.

Marcum is 1-9 on the season pitching 67.1 innings with a 5.08 ERA. He had two bad outings in a row before his last one where shut out his opponents for 8.0 innings. The last time he faced the Diamondbacks was back in 2011 where he allowed 7 hits and 4 ER over 6.0 innings of work. The Diamondbacks have the following numbers against him:

Kubel 4-14, 2B
Bloomquist 3-10
Prado 2-9, 2B
Montero 3-5, 2B, HR
Chavez 2-5, 2B
Parra 1-5

The Mets bats will try to figure out Wade Miley. Miley is 4-7 over 16 starts with a 4.55 ERA while pitching 95.0 innings and striking out 69 batters. In the month of June he made five starts 30.1 innings with a 3.56 ERA. Last year he was 0-1 over 2 games and 11.1 innings allowing 16 hits and 7 ER. The Mets have the following numbers against Miley:

Brown 0-5
Murphy 2-6, 2B
Wright 1-4
Young 0-3
Buck 1-2, 2B

Happy Wheeler Day! Happy David Wright Bobblehead Day!

Yesterday the Mets were able to even up the series against the Nationals thanks to good starting pitching from Gee, strong relief outings (Torres specifically) and the Mets hitting taking advantage of Washington’s mistakes. Today Wheeler makes his third major league start and his home debut while the Mets bats get yet another look at Gio Gonzalez.

Wheeler struggled in his second start in his career where he allowed 4 ER over 5.1 innings. The word on the street was Wheeler was tipping his pitches, something he has never done in his career at any level and something he did not do in his first start. Speaking of his first start, he pitched 6.0 innings allowing 4 hits and 5 walks while striking out 7 batters. He has never faced the Nationals or anyone on the Nationals roster.

Gio Gonzalez is 4-3 on the year over 16 starts and 98.0 innings with a 3.31 ERA. In five starts in the month of June he pitched 33.1 innings and struck out 37 batters with a 2.16 ERA. In one start against the Mets this year he allowed 5 ER over 4.0 innings. The Mets have the following numbers against Gio:

Wright 3-11, 3B, HR
Buck 2-12, 2B
Byrd 2-8
Murphy 1-6
Young 0-1

Game Preview: Nationals vs Mets

The Mets had a disappointing end to last night’s game as our stellar closer had a hiccup, which is bound to happen throughout the course of the season. The Mets as a steam look to bounce back today with Dillon Gee on the mound as he takes on Taylor Jordan who is making his major league debut today.

Dillon Gee is 5-7 on the season with a 4.82 ERA pitching 84.0 innings over 15 starts. For the first time in a while he struggled in his last outing allowing 5 ER over 5.0 innings. In two starts against the Nationals this year he has pitched 12.2 innings and has allowed only one earned run while striking out 13 batters. The Nationals have the following numbers against Dillon:

Werth 6-22, 2B
Desmond 5-20, 2 HR
Zimmerman 4-19, 2B
LaRoche 2-11
Bernadina 3-12, 2B, HR

Taylor Jordan is making his major league debut. The 6 3 right hander was drafted in the ninth round of the 2009 draft. He’s 9-1 this season with a 1.00 ERA in the minors while pitching 90.1 innings and striking out 72 batters. Overall, he’s pitched 339.0 innings in the minors with a 3.19 ERA.

2013 Uniform Change: David Wright’s All Star BP Jersey with Lettering

I’m not sure when MLB.com posted this, but there are now images of David Wright’s and Cano’s All-Star BP Jerseys on their website and they are available for purchase. They are both Captains for the Home Run Derby, and their uniforms reflect that with a C in the front. The lettering is White and the numbering has a star pattern on the back, which is much simpler than last years design. Pics below:

Game Preview: Nationals vs Mets

The Mets, fresh off of a successful road trip, come back home to the Nationals tonight. It feels like, at least recently, that the Mets fall flat in Colorado but Byrd helped reverse that by hitting a go ahead homer late in the game and making a key throw in the next half inning to keep the Mets in the lead.

How rude of me. I forgot to wish you a HAPPY HARVEY DAY. Matt will be starting for the Amazin’s tonight as he goes up against Ross Detwiler.

Matt Harvey is 7-1 with a league leading 2.05 ERA over 110.0 innings of work this year. He was dominant in his last outing going 6 shutout innings striking out 6 batters. He could have gone a lot farther, in fact it looked like during that game he could go the distance, if it wasn’t for the umpires calling a 30+ minute rain delay. His start against the Nationals earlier this year was a statement game as he allowed 1 run over 7 innings against Strasburg. The Nationals have the following numbers against Harvey:

Desmond 2-4
LaRoche 1-5
Werth 0-4
Lombardozzi 0-5
Suzuki 0-5
Span 1-4

Ross Detwiler is 2-6 on the season over 11 starts pitching 60.1 innings with a 4.18 ERA.  He has struggled in his last two starts allowing 4 ER over 6 and then 7 ER over 3.2 innings. Last year he was 3-0 over 18.0 innings of work against the Mets posting a 1.80 ERA. The Mets have the following numbers against him:

Wright 6-15, 3 2B, HR
Buck 3-8
Murphy 1-7
Byrd 0-5
Young 1-2

Game Preview: Mets @ Rockies

Fresh off a two game split with the White Sox, the Mets are heading to Colorado for a make up game. If you recall, the Mets had a large amount of outdoor games in early April in the MLB snowbelt and they a good amount of games got cancelled and moved around in Minnesota and Colorado, so the Mets are going to finish off the Colorado game today. Yesterday Marcum had a bounce back performance going 8 shutout innings leading the Mets to victory, something Jeremy Hefner will try to replicate today against Tyler Chatwood.

Jeremy Hefner is 2-6 over 81.0 innings with a 3.89 ERA. In the month of June, Hefner has made four starts with a 1.88 ERA over 24.0 innings while striking out 20 batters. He pitched in relief in a game in Colorado earlier this year allowing 2 ER over one inning, but this was before Hefner was really starting to deal like he has of late. The Rockies have the following numbers against Hefner:

Fowler 1-1, HR
Gonzalez 0-1
Helton 0-1
Rosario 0-1

Tyler Chatwood is 4-1 on the season over 8 starts while pitching 44.2 innings with a 2.22 ERA. He’s 1-1 over his last 3 starts with a 2.40 ERA. Last year he pitched 3.0 innings against the Mets where he allowed 0 runs, 3 hits and 3 BB’s. The Mets have the following numbers against Chatwood:

Murphy 0-5
Valdespin 1-1
Wright 1-2

Game Preview: Mets @ White Sox

The Mets and White Sox finish their two games series tonight as the Mets try to bounce back from last night. The Mets showed some fight form last night but they just fell a bit flat. Today, Shaun Marcum gets the nod for the Amazin’s as John Danks gets the start for the South Siders.

Shaun Marcum is 0-9 on the season with a 5.76 ERA over 59.1 innings with 53 strikeouts. His last two starts have been dreadful, after a series of good starts. He has allowed 6 ER over 5.2 innings and then 5 ER over 4.2 innings causing his ERA jump from 4.96 to 5.76. In his career he has faced the White Sox 5 times pitching 32.2 innings with a 2.48 ERA. The Sox have the following numbers against Marcum:

Ramirez 2-6, 2B
Gillaspie 1-3, 2B
Keppinger 0-3
Rios 1-3, HR
Konerko 0-2

John Danks is 1-4 over 6 starts this year pitching 35.0 innings with a 5.40 ERA. He is also coming off two weak starts allowing 4 ER in 6.0 innings and then 6 ER over 5.0 innings. Danks has never faced the Mets in his career but the following Mets have seen him while they were on other teams:

Byrd 3-18, 2B
Buck 2-11
Omar 1-5

Game Preview: Mets @ White Sox

The Mets travel to the South Side of Chicago for Wheeler Day! The Mets are coming off of a needed off day after pounding the Phillies in an 8-0 win. Harvey was great pitching 6 shutout innings (he was stopped by the rain, but really he was stopped by the umpires who were stopped by the rain) and David Wright had himself a day going 4-5, 2 2B, 3B, HR. Today Wheeler looks to build off of his excellent debut as he squares off against one of the best pitchers in the American League, Chris Sale.

Wheeler was great in his debut picking up the win after pitching 6.0 innings allowing only 4 hits while striking out 7 batters. His K to BB ratio was a little high (7:5) which was inflated by nerves in the first inning. Wheeler showed the pose we knew he had by getting out of self inflicted jams and relying on his stuff. He has never faced the White Sox nor has he faced any one on the White Sox level in a major league game.

Chris Sale is quickly becoming a rising star (although due to his market and his location, it’s easy for him to slip the mind the East Coast National League fan). He is 5-6 over 13 starts and 90.1 innings with a 2.69 ERA. He has walked 21 batters to 91 strikeouts. He has been more human in June going 0-4 with a 3.08 ERA. He has never faced the Mets and the only Met to face him is new to the team Eric Young, who is 0-1.

Game Preview: Mets @ Phillies

Happy Matt Harvey Day!

The Mets look to bounce back today against the Phillies in the rubber game against the Phillies. Yesterday Dillon Gee’s brain block against the Phillies continued as he put the Mets in a hole to start. Some how, the Mets made a come back and eventually almost beat the Phillies but lost 8-7. Hopefully Matt Harvey can lead the way against John Lannan.

Matt Harvey is 6-1 with 15 starts over 104.0 innings while posting a 2.16 ERA. He is leading the league in strikeouts with 115. He has been a bit more human in the month of June as he has posted a 3.12 ERA over 4 starts but has struck out 31 batters over 26.0 innings. He made one start against Philly this year where he pitched 7.0 innings allowing one run and striking out 9. The Phillies have the following numbers against Harvey:

Howard 0-7
Rollins 3-8, 2 2B
Utley 2-8
Nix 1-5
Brown 0-5

The Mets bats get a crack at John Lannan today who is 0-1 over 4 starts and 19.2 innings while posting a 5.49 ERA. Lannan has spent his career with the Nationals, but finds himself on the Phillies this year.  He faced the Mets once last year where shut the Mets out 5.2 innings. The Mets have the following numbers against John:

Wright 10-32, 3 2B
Buck 3-9
Murphy 2-7
Byrd 2-5, 2B
Young 1-3

Game Preview: Mets @ Phillies

The Mets were able to beat the Phillies and Hamels last night in Philly and win their 5th game in their last 7! The Amazin’s hope to keep rolling this afternoon and clinch their second straight series win by beating Jonathan Pettibone and the Phills behind Dillon Gee.

Dillon Gee is 5-7 on the season with a 4.56 ERA while pitching 79.0 innings. In his last four starts, Dillon Gee is 3-1 over 29.1 innings with a 1.53 ERA. In that stretch he has an amazing 32 strikeouts to 4 walks. Philly has not been nice to Gee this year. His second start was at Philly and he allowed 7 ER over 3.0 innings. His second start he allowed 4 ER over 6.0 innings. The Phillies have the following numbers against Dillon:

Mayberry 4-14, 2B, 2 HR
Rollins 8-13, 2B
Utley 3-13, 2B
Howard 4-12, 4 HR (Seriously)
Nix 3-9, 2B
Young 6-8, 2 HR

Jonathan Pettibone is 3-3 in his rookie season making 11 starts with a 4.40 ERA over 61.1 innings. He’s coming off of two poor starts where he allowed 6 runs, 4 earned over 5.1 innings and then 7 runs, 6 earned over 3.0 innings. His second career start was against the Mets and he allowed 7 hits and 3 earned runs over 5.0 innings. The Mets have the following numbers against Pettibone:

Duda 1-3
Murphy 0-3
Wright 2-3, 2B
Buck 0-1
Valdespin 1-2, 2B
