Game Preview: Cubs vs Mets

Well the Mets got swept by the Nationals in Citi Field and now they look to pick up the pieces against the Cubs as they come into Queens, probably to see Boyz II Men tomorrow night but also play a few games. Zack Wheeler is on the bump tonight for the Amazin’s as he squares off against Travis Wood.

Wheeler is 7-8 on the season over 24 games and 140.1 innings with a 3.53 ERA. His last start was his first in his last 8 that he allowed 3 ER (or more). Including his last start, in his last 8 he has pitched 51.1 innings with a 4-0 record and a 1.93 ERA while striking out 44. Earlier this year he shut out Cubs in Chicago over 6.2 innings while striking out 7 in a game the Mets eventually lost 2-1. The Cubs have the following numbers against Wheeler:

  • Castro 0-3
  • Lake 0-3
  • Rizzo 0-3
  • Valbuena 0-2
  • Baker 0-2
  • Coghlan 0-2

Travis Wood is 7-9 on the season over 24 starts and 139.0 innings with an ERA of 4.86.For last month or so he’s been a y0-yo of average, excellent or terrible, there’s no reason to really go too far back in the numbers because they just average out to his season numbers. Anyway he is coming off of an excellent start against the Rays allowing 1 run, unearned over 6.0. Earlier this year he faced the Mets allowing 2 ER, 4 hits and 5 walks over 5.0. The Mets have the following numbers against him:

  • Tejada 2-13
  • Wright 4-15, 3B
  • Duda 2-9, HR
  • Granderson 0-5
  • E Young 1-5
  • Flores 2-3, 2B
  • Lagares 2-3, 2B, HR

Game Preview: Nationals vs Mets

It was a disappointing game for the Mets last night. Twice late in the game (7th and 9th innings) they had a real opportunity to score runs and tie or take the lead in the game but it didn’t happen. Today they will try to right themselves as they take on Stephen Strasburg behind Dillon Gee.

Dillon Gee is 4-4 on the season over 14 games and 89.0 innings with a 3.54 ERA. After a stretch of horrid to average bad starts since coming off of the DL, he finally got it together in his last start allowing 1 ER over 7.0 innings. His first start of the season was against the Nationals where he allowed 4 ER over 6.2 innings. The Nationals have the following numbers against Gee:

  • Werth 11-37, 3 2B, HR
  • Desmond 7-35, 3 HR
  • LaRoche 5-25, 2B, 2 HR
  • Span 5-22, 2 2B, HR
  • Ramos 4-19, 2B, HR
  • Espinosa 1-13

Strasburg is 8-10 on the season over 25 games and 156.1 innings with a 3.68 ERA. He is coming off his second worst start of the year where he allowed 7 ER over 7 hits and 5.0 innings while striking out 9 agaisnt the Braves. His first start of the season was against the Mets where he allowed 4 ER over 5 hits and 6.0 innings while striking out 10. The Mets have the following numbers against Stephen:

The Nationals trounced the Mets on a soggy Tuesday night for the opener of the season, and tonight the Mets look to get back on track. Montero struggled in a spot start on a night that saw a shortish rain delay early, and had the tarp on the field before the start of the game. Tonight Jordan Zimmermann gets the start for Nationals against Bartolo Colon.

Colon is 11-9 on the season over 23 games and 154.1 innings with a 3.97 ERA. After a clunker of a start against the Giants where Colon allowed 6 ER over 4.2 innings, he was excellent in his last start against the Phillies allowing only one earned run over 8.0 innings of work. In two starts against the Nationals this year, he has allowed 5 ER over 14.0 innings of work. The Nationals have the following numbers against him:

  • Span 0-10
  • Cabrera 1-8, 2B
  • Rendon 1-7
  • Desmond 3-6, 2 HR
  • LaRoche 1-5, 2B
  • Werth 3-5, 2B

Jordan Zimmermann is 7-5 on the season with a 3.06 ERA and 23 starts over 138.1 innings. Like Fister in last night’s start, Zimmermann’s last start was also against the Mets where he allowed 3 ER over 6.1 innings while striking out 5 batters. It broke up his short streak of 7.0 inning outings. The Mets have the following numbers against Zimmermann:

  • Murphy 16-44, 5 2B, 3 HR
  • Wright 11-39, 2 2B, 2 HR
  • Duda 5-24, 2 2B
  • Tejada 5-18
  • Lagares 4-15, 2B
  • E Young 3-13, 2B
  • Granderson 1-7

Game Preview: Nationals vs Mets

The Mets took the series in Philly yesterday 3 games to 1 and head back to New York to face the Nationals again. On the whole, the Mets went 4-3 on the road, dropping 2 of 3 to the Nationals. Originally a deGrom day, Montero will be taking the start for deGrom as he heads to the DL for tendinitis. Montero will be squaring off against Doug Fister.

Montero was 0-2 in the majors over 4 games and 20.0 innings with an ERA of 5.40. The last time he was here he had one average start (3 ER over 6), one brilliant start (1 ER over 6, and 10 K’s) and two poor starts. Overall in the minors he is 6-3 this season over 17 games and 80.0 innings with a 3.15 ERA. He never faced the Nationals in a major league game last time he was here, and he hasn’t faced anyone on the Nationals roster, so no batting stats.

The Mets draw Fister again who is 11-3 over 16 starts and 104.2 innings with a 2.49 ERA. In his last three starts he has pitched 21.1 innings allowing 2 ER, 0.84 ERA and 17 K’s. • Granderson 3-16, HR
  • d’Arnaud 0-6
  • Lagares 2-5
  • Muprhy 1-6
  • Duda 2-3
  • Flores 2-3

Yesterday was a tough game to watch. The Mets had a 6-1 lead at one point before it started to slip away. Wheeler left after the 6th with a 6-3 lead, Black allowed 2 more runs, after retiring the first two batters, Edgin got things back under control, but then Mejia blew the save. There was a mixture of bad calls and lackluster play from the Mets. Today the Mets look to take the series 3-1 behind Jon Niese as he takes on David Buchanan.

Jon Niese is 5-8 over 21 starts and 128.1 innings with a 3.51 ERA. It has been a struggle with for Niese in his last four starts going 0-4 over 25.0 innings with a 5.76 ERA. His one start against the Phillies this year was a good one as he allowed 2 ER over 8.0 innings. The Phillies have the following numbers against Niese:

  • Rollins 11-50, 3 2B
  • Utley 3-28
  • Ruiz 10-27, 2 2B, HR

Buchanan is 6-5 this season over 11 starts, 65.2 innings and a 3.49 ERA. The rookie pitcher was recently recalled to the majors, and in his first start back he allowed 3 ER over 6.1 innings. His second start of his career was against the Mets back in the end of May where the Mets got 4 runs, three earned over 7 hits and 6.2 innings of work. The Mets have the following numbers against him:

  • Lagares 1-4, 2B
  • Murphy 0-4
  • Wright 1-4
  • d’Arnaud 0-3
  • Duda 1-3
  • Flores 1-3

The Mets play game three of four today in Philly behind arm of Zack Wheeler. Wheeler is 7-8 this season with a 3.48 ERA over 23 games and 134.1 innings. In his last start, he didn’t quite have his off-speed stuff, but he worked through it and still had an excellent line of allowing one run over 6.2 innings, which is a sign of his maturation process. In his last seven games he has pitched 45.1 innings with a 1.59 ERA. In two games against the Phillies this year he has tossed 13.0 innings and allowed 3 ER with 13 strikeouts. The Phillies have the following numbers against Wheeler:

  • Rollins 3-10
  • Revere 2-7, 2B
  • Ruiz 1-7, 2B
  • Asche 3-6, 3B
  • Byrd 1-6, HR

The Mets bats will get a crack at Kyle Kendrick who is 5-11 over 23 starts and 144.1 innings this year with a 4.74 ERA. After a string of below average starts, he had a good one against Houston his last time out allowing only 1 ER over 7.0 innings of work. In three starts against the Met this year he has allowed 19 hits and 12 ER over 17.1 innings, an ERA of over 6. The Mets have the following numbers against Kyle:

Game Preview: Mets @ Nationals

The Mets took the first game of the series last night against the Nationals with a 6-1 score behind a strong outing from Wheeler and some timely hitting. Wheeler did not have his best stuff last night, especially early with walks and a high pitch count, but he calmed down and only allowed one earned run over 6.2 innings of work. Tonight Jon Niese gets the nod tonight as he squares off against Doug Fister.

Jon Niese is 5-7 over 20 games and 122.1 innings of work with an ERA of 3.24. His last start wasn’t spectacular, but he did pitch 8.0 innings allowing three earned runs, 5 total over 9 hits on his way to his third straight loss. It was better than his two previous starts where he allowed a combined 7 ER over 11.0 innings. In his one start against the Nationals this year he allowed 3 ER, 5 total over 4.0 innings with 8 hits. The Nationals have the following numbers against him:

  • Werth 7-23, 2B

  • LaRoche 4-15, 2B, 2 HR
  • Espinosa 5-12, 2B
  • Hairston 4-10, 2B
  • Ramos 3-8

In his last four starts he has pitched 26.2 innings with a 2.03 ERA.
