Well the Marlins finally beat the Mets in 2015 last night and set up a rubber game for the conclusion of the series. Montero had a good start last night but the Mets roster let him down in two ways. First, there were several run scoring opportunities that they squandered throughout the game. Second, the defense in the 6th inning led to a series of events that led to 3 runs being scored. The Mets were able to tie it back up late, but Carlos Torres had a rough outing with control issues and the Mets couldn’t push in another run late.

Bartolo Colon will get the start for the Amazin’s tonight as he looks to build off his 4-0 start over his first 4 games with a 2.77 ERA over 26.0 innings. On the season he has walked 1 and struck out 23 batters. His third start of the season was against the Marlins where he allowed 1 run over 6 hits over 7.0 innings walking none and striking out 5. I don’t understand the 2015 Daniel Murphy. He has moments as an offensive stud. He makes game crippling errors and mental miscues. Yesterday was an example of the former where Murphy bailed Gee and the Mets out from a fantastic start with Gee coupled with zero offense. In the top of the ninth, with two on and one out, Murphy slammed a shot to right center giving the Mets a 3-1 lead. Tonight the Mets look to continue that magic against the fish.

Montero gets the start tonight. Throughout the season Montero and others will get a start to push everyone back a day, specifically Harvey, to stretch them throughout the season. On the season Montero has posted a 4.15 ERA over 4.1 innings allowing 3 runs, 2 earned. last year he had a 4.06 ERA over 10 games, 8 starts, over 44.1 innings. Last year he logged only one inning against the Marlins where he allowed 1 hit and a walk and nothing else in 1 inning. The Marlins have the following numbers against Montero:

The Mets head to Miami tonight to jump back on the winning track. Yesterday they dropped a disappointing series finale to the Yankees 6-4 behind 4 defensive errors. Even throughout the winning streak, this has been a thorn in the Mets side in the infield. The Mets are making either errors, mental miscues that don’t show up as errors and a decreased range across the diamond.

Dillon Gee is coming off his best start of the season as the Mets roll into Miami. He is 0-1 over 3 starts with a 5.60 ERA and 17.2 innings of work. In his last start against Atlanta he tossed 7.0 innings allowing 2 runs while walking only 1 and striking out 3. He also already has one start against the Marlins this year where he allowed 4 ER over 5.2 innings while walking 2 and striking out 7. The Marlins have the following numbers against Gee:

For the first time since the start of the season, the Mets will play in a rubber game! Yesterday the Mets rebounded from their loss at Yankee Stadium on Friday night and launched 3 homers behind a dominant Matt Harvey as they rolled over the Yankees 8-2. Not only did Lagares have a great day in the field but he was also 4-4 at the plate with a triple. Personally, it was my first time at Yankee Stadium and I finally understood the comments about the short right field seeing it in person. It looks short on TV but live is a different story. Anyway, the Mets turn to Niese tonight to shut down the Yanks as the Yankees send out Nathan Eovaldi.

Niese is 2-0 over 3 starts this season with a 1.50 ERA over 18.0 innings of work. He’s allowed 20 hits in that stretch and 8 walks while striking out 11. That pretty much tells the story of Niese this season. He’s been catching a lot of the plate and putting the ball in play a lot (and really, its the latter that needs to be watched). However, his last start was far and away his best this season, despite allowing 4 walks. He held the Braves to 4 hit sand one run over 6.2 and struck out 5. He missed the Yankees last year but in 2014 he held them to 1 run over 7.0 innings while walking 1 and striking out 4. The Yankees have the following numbers against him:

The Mets bats will get a look at a former NL East foe in Nathan Eovaldi who was traded to the Bronx this past winter. He is 1-0 this year over 3 starts and 17.1 innings where he has allowed 24 hits and 5 walks while striking out 14 leading to a 3.12 ERA. This is an improvement so far from 2014 where he finished 6-14 with a 4.37 ERA and led the league in hits allowed at 223. In two games against the Amazin’s last year he allowed 9 ER and 11 hits in 11.1 innings of work. The Mets have the following numbers against him:

Well it had to end eventually. The Yankees snapped the Mets win streak at 11 games yesterday as the Yankee bats were able to get to deGrom early and often and the Mets bats were flustered by the Yanks. Today however is a new day and the Mets look to start a new streak behind Matt Harvey as he takes on CC Sabathia.

The last Harvey start was not spectacular for a lot of reasons. Harvey was battling an illness which may have impacted his play on the field. Later in the game both Jerry Blevins and Travis d’Arnaud suffered fractures knocking them out for a while. It just wasn’t the best win in the world. On the season Harvey is 3-0 over 18.0 innings allowing 7 runs, 17 hits, 1 walk while striking out 24 (His run numbers are still inflated from his last start). In 2013 he held the Yankees to 1 run over 8.0 innings walking no one, allowing 6 hits and striking out 10. The Yankees have the following numbers against Harvey:

The Mets bats draw CC Sabathia today who is 0-3 on the season with a 4.35 ERA over 20.2 innings allowing 22 hits, 11 runs, 10 earned, while walking 4 and striking out 20. The numbers don’t tell a complete story. His first start was awful allowing 5 runs, 4 earned over 5.2 innings, then in his next start he improved to 4 runs over 7.0 in his last sarthe allowed 2 runs over 8, but the bats couldn’t bail him out.  The last time he faced the Mets was way back in 2012 where he allowed 5 runs, only 1 earned over 5.2 innings. These Mets! They did it again yesterday afternoon as they beat the Braves, took their streak to 11 games, 10-0 on the homestand and 13-3 on the season. The winning streak is now tied for the longest winning streak in franchise history and the 10-0 record on the homestand is the best record the Mets have ever had in a 10 game homestand. Yesterday Bartolo was a better than his numbers suggest as he threw more pitches than needed thanks to a Murphy miscue. Murphy also had 4 RBI’s so Murphy giveth, Murphy taketh. The Mets commute to the Bronx tonight to open up 2015’s first Subway Series.

Jacob deGrom makes his 4th start of the season tonight. So far he is 2-1 with a 0.93 ERA over 3 games and 19.1 innings. Overall on the season he has had 3 walks, 19 hits and 2 ER while striking out 17 innings. Those two runs came from the first inning of his first game of the season. Jacob made one start against the Yankees last year where he allowed 1 run on 4 hits over 7.0 innings while walking 2 and striking out 6. The Yankees have the following numbers against deGrom:

Michael Pineda gets the start for the Yankees as he looks to make his 4th start of the season. He’s 2-0 over three starts with a 5.00 ERA over 18.0 innings. In that stretch he allowed 22 hits and 10 runs while walking 2 and striking out 20. Looking more specifically at his starts, his first one was average (2 runs over 6), second one was bad (5 runs and 6.1) and third was ok (3 runs over 5.2). He didn’t face the Mets last season. In 13 starts last season he was 5-5 with a 1.89 ERA over 76.1 innings. The only Mets who have faced him are Cuddyer (1-5) and Granderson (0-1).

The Mets did it again last night as they beat the Braves 3-2 and won their 10th straight game. Now the Amazin’s look to go a perfect 10-0 on the homestand against the Braves on getaway day before the first leg of the subway series. Last night Gee had by far his best start of the season and was the also the recipient of strong defense in the outfield by Juan Lagares. The Mets were able to scratch out some late run magic and Familia shut the door in the 9th.

Bartolo Colon, the man who started this streak, heads to the bump today with a 3-0 record over 20.0 innings with a 2.25 ERA. He’s allowed 15 hits this season, walked 1 and struck out 18 batters. His second start of the season, the one that stopped the Mets two game slide, was against the Braves and started this magical run. In that outing he allowed 3 ER over 7.0 innings walking none and striking out 5. The Braves have the following numbers against Bartolo:

The next man up mentality is strong with this team! Two days after losing a catcher in a hot streak and a reliever who was perfect on the season, the Mets still looked sharp against the Braves as they won their 9th straight game. Tonight the Mets look to take the second game of the series which would take the series overall and be the 10th win in a row. Last night, Plawecki made his major league debut going 2-4 and scoring 2 runs. However the stars of the night were Granderson and Niese. Niese allowed a solo homer and nothing else over 6.2 innings and Granderson went 3-5 with his first extra base hit of the season and his first RBI’s on the season (4!).

Dillon Gee gets the nod tonight. Its been a rough start to the season for Dillon who is 0-1 over 10.2 innings with a 7.59 ERA. As the Mets approach the date where Montero will make a 6th start, the feeling has to start to creep about if Gee could be on a short leash (although I’m not sure how credible that feeling is). His first start of the season was against the Braves where he allowed 5 ER over 5.0 innings and 8 hits, 4 runs coming in his last inning. The Braves have the following numbers against Gee:

The Mets will get another look at Eric Stults who is 0-1 on the season allowing 7 ER over 10.0 innings, bringing his ERA to a 6.30. His first start against the Mets wasn’t bad, but wasn’t good either. He allowed 3 ER over 5.0 innings and 7 hits walking 1 and striking out 3. In his last outing against Miami he allowed 4 ER over 5 hits and 2 walks that occurred over 5.0 innings. The Mets have the following numbers against Stults:

While you were sleeping, Ike Davis pitched a 1-2-3 inning for the Athletics.

The Angels beat the Athletics last night by the score of 14-1. Rather than burning the bullpen more in the 8th inning, the Athletics turned to Ike Davis who actually did fine. Not only was it a 1-2-3 inning but he only had to throw 9 pitches.

Granted, the Angels up 14-1 in the 8th were probably swinging more than they would normally, and we can speculate about whether they were good hacks or not, but the results stand and Davis had a perfect inning of relief.
