The Mets have lost three of their last four games by a total of three runs. In some ways the last four games have become a microcosm of the season as a whole. The Mets constantly feel so close to breaking out. So close to going on a run. If only they could just get their offense to click in a higher gear.
Tonight the Mets head north of the border and will try to get their offense to click against one of the best, young arms in the league. Here we go!
Sean Manaea has pitched in 17 games this season totaling 57 1/3 innings with a 4.87 ERA, 3.67 FIP, 1.413 WHIP and an 84 ERA+. He had a short outing his last time out lasting just three innings allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits and two walks. In his two starts before that he allowed five runs, four earned over 11 1/3 innings. The Blue Jays have the following career stats against him:
- Ernie Clement 1-4, K
- Vladimir Guerrero Jr. 3-6, 2 K
- Alejandro Kirk 0-3, K
- Nathan Lukes 0-3
- George Springer 13-41, 2 2B, HR, 4 BB, 13 K
- Myles Straw 4-11, 2B, 2 BB, 3 K
- Luis Urias 0-3, 2 K
- Daulton Varsho 0-6, BB, K
Trey Yesavage has made 11 starts pitching 60 2/3 innings with a 3.56 ERA, 3.79 FIP, 1.170 WHIP and a 127 ERA+. June started off rough for Yesavage who allowed 11 runs over 10 2/3 innings. Since then he has allowed only four runs over 13 innings from six hits and five walks. This will be his first career start against the Mets and no on the Mets has faced Yesavage in a Major League game before.
Three Things To Watch For:
- Walk this way. Trey Yesavage has already walked 30 batters this season, good for a 4.5 BB/9. His 12% walk rate is in the 16th percentile in the league. He’s able to limit the dagame because of how good his stuff is (29.2% whiff%, 88th percentile for barrel rate). The Mets worked eight walks yesterday with Juan Soto and Brett Baty each picking up three. Patience is a virtue tonight!
- Bring them home! Success for the Mets tonight will depend on their ability to bring runners home. Yesterday the Mets went 2-for-16 with runners in scoring position and left 14 runners on. They scored only four runs. The Phillies went 2-for-6 and left six runners on. They scored five runs. Just a demoralizing day for the Mets and hopefully it doesn’t spread to today.
- Red-hot Ewing. In his last five games A.J. Ewing has gone 8-for-16 with a double, two home runs and three walks (.500/.579/.938). He started on the bench yesterday for the Mets and still collected two hits including a massive two-run homer.
Let’s Go Mets!
