Game Preview: Mets @ Angels

The Mets go for a series win tonight against the Angels in a rubber game to cap off their series and the Mets 10-game road trip. The Mets have been on the west coast for a while and tonight they will grace our televisions at a more respectable time, 7 PM.

Taijuan Walker gets the start for the Mets tonight. Over nine games and 46 2/3 innings, Walker has a 3.28 ERA, 3.87 FIP, 1.264 WHIP and a 122 ERA+. He’s coming off of a rough start against the Padres where he allowed four runs from five hits and two walks over six innings of work. The other two times this year where he allowed three runs or more in a start, he responded with a beautiful start (both times seven shutout innings). Hopefully he does that again tonight! The Angels have the following numbers against him:

  • Mike Trout 10-16, 3B, 3 HR, 5 K
  • Anthony Rendon 1-3, 2B, BB, K
  • Matt Duffy 1-3
  • Tyler Wade 1-1, 2 BB
  • Juan Lagares 0-2, K
  • Shohei Ohtani 1-1, HR, BB
  • Kurt Suzuki 0-2

The Mets bats will get a look at Patrick Sandoval, who is in the midst of a career year. Over nine starts and 48.0 innings, Sandoval has a 2.81 ERA, 2.85 FIP, 1.313 WHIP and 140 ERA+. In his previous three seasons he had a 4.42 ERA, 4.59 FIP, 1.276 WHIP and a 102 ERA+. Sandoval had his worst start of the season back on May 29th where he allowed six runs, five earned, over three innings of work. He did alright in a bounce back start last time out, allowing two runs from four hits and four walks over 4 2/3 innings. The only Mets who have seen him in the major leagues were recently with American League teams:

  • Mark Canha 4-7, 2B, 3B, 2 BB
  • Eduardo Escobar 0-5
  • Starling Marte 0-3
  • Francisco Lindor 0-1, BB

Game Preview: Mets @ Angels

We made it! This is the last late start for the Mets before the All-Star Break! Tomorrow the Mets play a 7 PM game and then they return to the East Coast! No longer will we have to decide between sleep and Mets baseball! Anyway, the Mets won last night. A win tonight will clinch a series victory and guarantee that the Mets go at least .500 on this grueling West Coast swing.

Carlos Carrasco gets the start for the Mets tonight. Over 11 starts and 64.0 innings this year he has a 3.52 ERA, 2.68 FIP, 1.156 WHIP and a 114 ERA+. He is also leading the league in wins at 7. In June he has made two starts, totaling 12 innings of work allowing only two runs (1.50 ERA) from nine hits and five walks while striking out 15. Carrasco struck out 10 betters in his last start alone, the first time this season he has had double digit strikeouts. The Angels have the following numbers against him:

  • Mike Trout 3-11, 2 2B, 2 BB, 4 K
  • Kurt Suzuki 1-8, 2 K
  • Anthony Rendon 0-2, BB, K
  • Andrew Velazquez 1-3, K
  • Juan Lagares 0-1
  • Shohei Ohtani 0-1
  • Jared Walsh 1-1, HR

The Mets bats will get a look at Michael Lorenzen tonight. The long time Reds pitcher signed as a free agent this past off-season and so far is experiencing a bounce-back year. He has made nine starts and pitched 53 2/3 innings with a 3.69 ERA, 3.84 FIP, 1.137 WHIP and a 107 ERA+. He is in the midst of a rough patch, allowing eight runs from ten hits and seven walks in his last two starts (12 1/3 innings), which is a 5.84 ERA.

The last couple of years the Reds used Lorenzen primarily in the bullpen, the Angels have only used him as a starter. As a reliever last year he faced the Mets on back to back days at the end of July, holding the Mets scoreless over two innings while picking up two holds. The Mets have the following numbers against him:

  • Starling Marte6-17, 2 2B, HR, 3 BB, 3 K
  • Francisco Lindor 1-6, K
  • Brandon Nimmo 1-4, 2B
  • Pete Alonso 1-2
  • Jeff McNeil 0-0, 2 BB
  • Eduardo Escobar 1-1

The Mets wrap up their long, 10-game road trip with a series against the Angels this weekend! The Mets are heading into this series after losing a series to the Padres, on back to back blowout losses. That being said, they are still 3-4 against two very good teams on the road this year and they’ve played the last 1.5 games fairly banged up. Hopefully yesterday’s off-day came at a critical point for the Mets to just reset themselves physically.

The Angels have their own mess of a situation going on. Last night they snapped a 14-game losing streak. Mike Trout is day to day right now, and is aiming to come back as soon as tonight depending on how he feels. The Angels bumped Syndergaard from this weekend to Tuesday to give him more rest. The ripple effect was the Angles didn’t have a starter for tonight! The indication on Thursday at least that the start would go to Jhonathan Diaz who was scratched from his start in the minors.

Jhonathan Diaz has had a few cups of coffee in the major leagues. So far this year he has pitched in three games, starting two, totaling 13 2/3 innings with a 1.32 ERA, 4.39 FIP, 1.171 WHIP and a 304 ERA+. His last start was only eight days ago against the Yankees where he allowed two runs over four innings from four hits including a homer. He left after 53 pitches. In back to back starts in May in the majors he tossed 67 and 75 pitches. He’s also pitched six games in Salt Lake this season where he has a 3.78 ERA over 33.1 innings of work. In the minors he’s tossed more than 80 pitches four times, so he can go deeper today in the game than his previous work in the majors lets on. The only members of the Mets roster who have seen him in a game played for the Athletics last year. Starling Marte, nursing an injury, went 0-2 and Mark Canha drew a walk in his one at bat against Diaz.

The Mets will send out Tylor Megill in his return to the mound in his return from biceps tendinitis. Megill started out this season filling in for Jacob deGrom and a combination of David Peterson and Trevor Williams have done well in his absence. Over seven starts and 34 2/3 innings this year, Megill has a 4.41 ERA, 3.38 FIP, 1.125 WHIP and a 91 ERA+. The vast majority of the statistical damage to Megill was done in the start that he was injured during. On May 11th he allowed eight runs over 1 1/3 innings, raising his ERA from 2.43 to 4.41. Tonight will be Megill’s first time facing anyone on the Angels roster in a major league game.

Game Preview: Mets vs Padres

The Mets and Padres play a rubber game tonight as the Mets try to take the series from the Padres. Last night was the Padres night – they rolled through the Mets with a 7-0 victory. More importantly, the Mets lost Pete Alonso and Starling Marte to injuries in the game. There have been a few constants this season the Mets need to lean on tonight. First, every person on the roster is important and contributes. Second, winning solves every worry. Let’s go get that win today!

Chris Bassitt gets the start for the Mets tonight. Chris Bassitt has made 11 starts and 65.0 innings with a 3.74 ERA, 4.44 FIP, 1.169 WHIP and a 107 ERA+. Bassitt had a rougher start his last time out, allowing four runs, three earned, over six innings against the Dodgers last weekend. He’s in the midst of a tough stretch where he has allowed 17 runs, 16 earned over 22.2 innings and four starts. In his seven starts before this stretch he allowed only 11 runs. The San Diego Padres have the following career numbers against Bassitt:

  • Eric Hosmer 2-11, 2B, 2 K
  • Manny Machado 1-7, K
  • Nomar Mazara 1-6, BB, 2 K
  • Wil Myers 1-3, 2B, 2 K
  • Sergio Alcantara 0-2
  • Austin Nola 0-2, K

The former Oakland Athletic Chris Bassitt faces off of against another long time Oakland Athletic, Sean Manaea. Sean has pitched 10 game sand 62 innings with a 3.77 ERA, 3.64 FIP, 1.113 WHIP and a 103 ERA+ in his first year with the Padres. From the end of April through the end of May, Manaea had a 5.35 ERA from 22 earned runs over 37 innings over six starts. He’s coming off of a start where he held the Brewers to one run over 6.0 innings, which was his best start since April 18th. There are very few Mets on the roster who have seen Manaea in a major league game:

  • Francisco Lindor 4-9, 2 2B, HR, K
  • Eduardo Escobar 3-6, HR, BB, 2 K
  • Starling Marte 0-2, K

Carlos Carrasco gave the Mets length, going seven innings. Eduardo Escobar became the 11th Met to hit for the cycle and overall the Mets collected 16 hits. A nice night in San Diego.

Taijuan Walker looks to repeat last night’s magic as he takes the mound today. Over eight starts and 40 2/3 innings, Walker has a 2.88 ERA, 3.70 FIP, 1.279 WHIP and a 139 ERA+. In his last five starts and 29 2/3 innings of work, he has allowed seven runs and nine walks with a 2.12 ERA. Half of the 14 runs he’s allowed this season came on one start back on May 5th.

  • Eric Hosmer 3-8, 3 K
  • Jurickson Profar 3-8, HR, K

Game Preview: Mets @ Padres

The Mets continue their west coast road trip after a wild series with the Padres. This past weekend the Mets lost the first two games to the first place Dodgers but then the Mets showed us the same magic they have brought all season. On Saturday they bounced back behind David Peterson to win 9-4. Yesterday they overcame a 2-0 deficit in the first inning to win a back and forth, extra inning duel to split the series. Was this a playoff series preview?

The Mets will now go from facing one possible playoff contended to another – the San Diego Padres. The Padres have had a similar weekend to the Mets as they took on the first place Brewers. After losing the first game on Thursday, they went on to win the next three games. In a way, this set of seven games for both the Padres and the Mets mimic October with both teams facing tough opponents before each other.

Carlos Carrasco takes the mound for the Mets tonight. Over his first ten games and 57 innings of the season he has a 3.63 ERA, 2.93 FIP, 1.211 WHIP and a 110 ERA+. Carrasco shut out the Nationals his last time out on the mound, holding them to four hits and five walks but didn’t allow anyone to cross the plate. It was a good bounce back for Carrasco from the five runs he allowed to the Phillies in the start before that. The Padres have the following career numbers against Carrasco:

  • Eric Hosmer 8-31, 2 2B, 3B, 4 BB, 8 K
  • Manny Machado 2-7, 2 BB, 2 K
  • Jorge Alfaro 1-7, BB, 2 K
  • Nomar Mazara 3-8, 2B, 3 K
  • Jurickson Profar 3-5, HR, BB, K
  • Wil Myers 2-3, BB, K

The Mets bats will get a look at Blake Snell tonight. Over three games and 15.0 innings, Snell has logged a 4.80 ERA, 4.07 FIP, 1.067 WHIP and an 81 ERA+. He’s coming off of his best start of the season so far, where he allowed two runs from two hits and five walks over six innings. Snell faced the Mets twice last June in back to back starts. In San Diego he allowed only a hit and a walk over seven innings while striking out 10 Mets. Then in Queens he allowed three runs from five hit sand three walks over four innings. The Mets have the following career numbers against Snell:

  • Francisco Lindor 2-20, 2B, 3 K
  • Mark Canha 3-13, HR, 2 BB, 7 K
  • Starling Marte 3-9, 2B, HR, K
  • Eduardo Escobar 0-8, 3 K
  • Pete Alonso 1-5, HR, 2 BB
  • Brandon Nimmo 1-3, 2B, BB
  • J.D. Davis 0-2, BB, K
  • Jeff McNeil 2-3, K

Trevor Williams has pitched in nine games, including four starts, for the Mets this year, totaling 27 2/3 innings with a 3.58 ERA, 3.65 FIP, 1.193 WHIP and a 112 ERA+. Williams is coming off of a strong start against the Nationals where he held them scoreless for five innings, scattering three hits and two walks. Since his one bad start on May 21st where he allowed four runs over four innings, he’s allowed no runs over 8 2/3 innings. Last year he got a brief relief outing against the Dodgers where he held them hitless over two innings. The Dodgers have the following career numbers against Williams:

  • Freddie Freeman 3-10, 2 BB, 2 K
  • Trea Turner 3-10, BB, K
  • Chris Taylor 2-7, HR, 2 BB, K
  • Cody Bellinger 2-6, BB, K
  • Kevin Pillar 1-7, 2B, 2 K
  • Justin Turner 0-3, BB, 2 K

The Mets bats close things out in Hollywood against Julio UrĂas. Like everyone else on the Dodgers, Julio is having a great year / borderline career year. Over ten starts and 53 innings he has a 2.89 ERA, 4.50 FIP, 1.113 WHIP and a 144 ERA+. He’s coming off of his second worst start of the year against the Pirates where he allowed four runs over six innings from eight hits and a walk. If he’s had one weak point, it’s been homers. He’s allowed nine of them this year, include two in his last start and four against Philly on May 14th. He has a 1.5 HR/9 rate, his career rate is 0.9.

Julio made one start against the Mets last year he allowed no runs over five innings from two hits and two walks while striking out 5. The Mets have the following career numbers against him:

  • Eduardo Escobar 4-15, 2B, 4 K
  • Starling Marte 2-9, 3 K
  • Brandon Nimmo 1-3
  • Pete Alonso 1-3, K

David Peterson is 2-0 over six games and five starts this season, tossing 29 2/3 innings with a 3.03 ERA, 3.99 FIP, 1.180 WHIP and a 132 ERA+. The month of May hasn’t been the greatest for Peterson as he has allowed 10 runs, 9 earned over three starts. Game Preview: Mets @ Dodgers

What do I have in common with the New York Mets bats? We both fell asleep last night before 10 PM eastern time! The Mets lost a tough pitcher’s battle last night against the Dodgers and look to bounce back tonight!

Chris Bassitt has made 10 starts and pitched 59 innings this season with a 3.66 ERA, 4.31 FIP, 1.169 WHIP and a 109 ERA+. He hit a rough patch in mid-May, allowing 12 runs over two starts and 10 2/3 innings (he’s only allowed a total of 24 runs this season). Chris bounced back though in his last start, holding the Phillies to one run over six innings from two hits and three walks. He did face the Dodgers in 2021 and it didn’t go so well – Bassitt allowed four runs from nine hits and a walk over six innings. The Dodgers have the following career numbers against him:

  • Mookie Betts 1-4
  • Kevin Pillar 1-4
  • Austin Barnes 2-3, 2B, K
  • Gavin Lux 0-2, BB
  • Justin Turner 2-3, 2B

The Mets bats get a resurgent Tyler Anderson tonight. In his career, Anderson has a 4.49 ERA, 4.35 FIP, 1.292 WHIP, and a 102 ERA+. This season, over nine games and 49.2 innings with a 2.90 ERA, 3.26 FIP, 1.007 WHIP and a 143 ERA+. Anderson has had one bad start this year where he allowed seven runs from 10 hits over 6.0 innings. Since then he has tossed 21 innings over three games, allowing only two runs from 17 hits and a walk. He made a start against the Mets as a Pirate last year before he was traded to the Mariners. In that start he allowed two runs from six hits over five innings. The Mets have the following numbers against Anderson:

  • Eduardo Escobar 2-11, 2B, 2 BB, 2 K
  • Starling Marte 3-13, 2B, 2 K
  • Mark Canha 2-8, 2 K
  • Brandon Nimmo 3-6, HR, K
  • Francisco Lindor 0-3
  • Pete Alonso 0-2

Game Preview: Mets @ Dodgers

The Mets start their largest challenge of the season tonight – a ten game road trip where they will face the Dodgers, Padres and Angels.

Overall the Mets have had a difficult schedule to start the season and this is the the stretch that feels like the peak. They are about to play three good teams, including one of the best in baseball, for ten road games. Most of the games are happening outside normal, east coast fan viewing hours. The Mets though are also riding a six game winning streak and are coming off their first two sweeps of the season.

Taijuan Walker looks to keep the Mets on the winning path tonight. Over his first seven starts and 35.0 innings, Walker has a 2.83 ERA, 3.83 FIP, 1.257 WHIP and a 141 ERA+. Walker has allowed 12 runs, 11 earned this season, and seven of those runs came against the Phillies one start. Since that start he has allowed five runs over 24 innings with a 1.88 ERA. Walker faced the Dodgers last season in back to back starts, allowing one run over 6 `2/3’s on August 14th and then four runs over six innings on August 19th. The Dodgers have the following career numbers against him:

  • Trea Turner 4-13, 2B, BB, 2 K
  • Cody Bellinger 3-14, HR, 3 K
  • Justin Turner 3-13, 2B, BB, 3 K
  • Chris Taylor 2-11, 2B, 2 BB, 4 K
  • Freddie Freeman 2-11, HR, 4 K
  • Mookie Betts 2-5, BB, 2 K
  • Will Smith 2-6, 2B, HR

The Mets bats will get a look at Tony Gonsolin who is off to a tremendous start this year. Over nine starts and 45.0 innings, Tony has a 1.80 ERA, 3.19 FIP, 0.933 WHIP and a 230 ERA+ (all career bests). He has been a bit more human over his last three starts, allowing five runs over 18 innings, translating to a 2.50 ERA. Tony missed the month of August last season, which is when both series with the Mets happened. There are only two Mets on the roster who have seen him in a major league game: Eduardo Escobar (5-13, 2B, 2 HR, 3 K) and Starling Marte (0-4).
