The Mets will try to forget about last night's terrible lost where they were heavily outhit, outwalked, and then gave it up on a bases loaded hit by pitch. So the Mets will send their ace up tonight to take on Randy Wolf and put the Mets back into the win column. (On a side note, I can't say “back in the win column” without thinking about Joe Angel, who currently does the play by play game calling for the Baltimore Orioles on the radio).
Anyway, Randy Wolf, he is 3-4 this year with a 4.33 ERA over 70.2 IP. Last year he picked up a win against the Mets pitching 6 innings, allowing 3 runs, 9 hits, no walks and struck out 2. The year before that, he had a 2-0 record against the Mets over 3 games posting an identical ERA of 4.50, this time allowing 8 runs over 16 innings pitched, and allowed 16 hits, 9 walks and struck out 10. With those types of numbers, you would expect the Mets to at least beat him in one of those games. Here are some numbers that current Mets have put up against Wolf:
    Castillo 17-40 (.425 BA), 4 2B, 3B, HR
    Reyes 7-26, 2 HR
    Wright 2-15
    Beltran 7-22, 4 2B, HR
How about Beltran's extra base hit numbers on Wolf? Five of his seven hits were for extra bases, and Reyes also flashes some power against him.
Santana has been pretty great in his last two starts going 2-0, pitching 14.2 innings, walking 5, striking out 13, allowing only one homerun and has an ERA of 2.45. The last time he pitched against the Padres was a while ago. In 2005, he pitched 6.2 innings allowed 4 runs, walked 4, struck out 3 and took the loss. He has had a strong last 9 games posting a record of 6-1, over 61 innings pitched and has an ERA of 3.25. His walk to strikeout numbers have been amazing. In those nine games he has allowed only 16 walks, less than 2 walks a game and has struck out 53. Here are some Padre offense numbers against Santana:

There are always plenty of surprises later in the draft. There are surprises that no one can predict, and in a few years, in a Get To Know A Prospect section on this website, we could be looking at this post talking about a few of these players being the future of the club. Its why I love the Baseball draft. Unlike NBA and NFL, where your draft pick makes an impact the following year, here, your pick could be the superstar 2 years down the road, or 5 years from now and can be from all the way down from the bottom rounds. The first few rounds are becoming more predictable with drafting good players due to advanced scouting, but nothing can stop gems from the later rounds.

The draft is already in its 15th round and the Mets have already made a lot of selections. Over the course of the next few weeks, I will be going over introductions of several of the Mets big picks, and then during the offseason, they will get a formal “Get To Know A Prospect” if they signed with the Mets and played with the team at one of their minor league levels.

The Mets open up another series against an NL West opponent tonight as they start their four game set with the Padres. The Mets have won their last three series now and have a record of 7-3 in their last ten games. A lot of this is due to the awakening of a few of their players, Reyes, Wright and Beltran, hitting like they should. In the last ten games, these are their lines:
    Reyes 44 AB, 15 H, 5 2B, 4 HR, 8 RBI, 6 BB, .341 BA, .727 SLG
    Wright 39 AB, 13 H, 3 2B, 2 HR, 7 RBI, 7 BB, .333 BA
    Beltran 37 AB, 12 H, 3 2B, 2 HR, 8 RBI, 7 BB, .324 BA
Those numbers are fantastic and are what the Mets were hoping for, and then some, out of these three players. What is really surprising is how similar these numbers are between these three players, and shows that the Mets can have a really balanced lineup when everything starts to click. Banks, the starting pitcher for the Padres, will be trying to stop the Mets.
Banks has only played 6 games, and started 2 since debuting in 2007. In 2007, he made two relief appearances and one start totaling to 7.1 IP, 6 ER, 2 BB, 2 K. This year, he has been completely different as he has pitched 17 innings and has been lights out. He has allowed no runs, walked 5 times and struck out 10. In his first start this season, he pitched a complete game shut out, allowed 6 hits, walked no one, and struck out 5. He has no batting record against any Mets. Right handers are hitting .257 against him and Lefties are hitting .217 against him. The Mets got smoked against Billingsley the last time they faced a young pitcher, but they were able to light up the Dodger pen. Hopefully the Mets will be able to actually score Banks who is sporting a career ERA of 2.22 (over 24.1 innings).

On the side of shutting the Padres' bats, will by Mike Pelfrey. Pelfrey had to make a statement in his last start to show the Mets he deserved to stay in the rotation. He made a great statement holding the Dodgers to two runs over 7 innings, walking one and striking out 6. Before his last start, right handers were hitting .272 against him and lefties were hitting .385 against him. After his last start, right handers BA dropped to .265 and lefties BA dropped to .375. So not a huge drop, but it shows that he is starting to improve. He has never faced the Padres before.

Well the draft doesn't start until 2:00 but the Rays have already announced their first. With the first pick in the 2008 Draft, the Tampa Bay Rays select Tim Beckham. Beckham is highly touted high school shortstop from Georgia. MLB.com quoted the Rays scouting director, R. J. Harrison saying:
“a really good player at a premium position…Middle of the field player, very good athlete, an advanced bat…Has a real good awareness on the field. He plays the
game with a great deal of enthusiasm. And then when you spend time with
him away from the field, he's the same guy. He's a fun guy to be around.”
Over at Baseball Digest Daily, they have found Beckham's batting numbers from this past year, and they are amazing. In 78 AB, he has 39 hits, 40 runs, 9 2B, 5 HR, 31 RBI's and 2 SB. These numbers might be different than others that will be more readily available on the internet over the next few days because they are his batting stats with two games left in the season. Even with that, those are some amazing numbers.
Other notable number 1 draft picks the Rays have made in recent years are Josh Hamilton (High School), Delmon Young (High School), and David Price (Vanderbelt).

The Mets will try to take the rubber game this afternoon, and take another series, as they face the Giants. The pitching matchup today pits Matt Cain vs John Maine. The first two games this series have been pretty wild, and overall, pretty high scoring. As you will see, with Maine's numbers against the Giants, the high scoring part, at least for the Giants, should not happen today.
Cain has had an interesting season in that he has only 5 decisions in 12 starts this year. He is 2-3 over 74.0 IP and an ERA of 4.38. Last year, he faced the Mets twice and lost both times. He pitched 14 innings, walked 3, struck out 9 and had an ERA of 5.14. However, in 2006, he faced the Mets twice and won both times. In 12 innings of work, he posted an ERA of 3.75, walked only one and still struck out nine. The Mets have put up these numbers against Cain:
    Delgado 0-14
    Reyes 6-12, 2B, 2 3B
    Wright 7-13, 5 2B
    Church 1-8
    Beltran 2-5, 2B
Looking at these numbers, I am assuming that Delgado will get the day off. Reyes and Wright have really done well against Cain. 3 of Reyes 6 hits were for extra bases and 5 of Wrights 7 hits have been for extra bases. Lets hope to see the offense from yesterday carry over to today.
Maine has struggled as of late. In his last three games, he is 0-2, has an ERA of 6.19, pitched 16 innings, walked 8 and has struck out 16. It would be really nice to see Maine turn it around today. In 2007, he pitched a no decision against the Giants where he lasted 6 innings and allowed 3 earned runs. In that game he walked 6, and struck out 4. That being said look at the current Giant numbers against Maine:
    Rowand 0-9, 3 BB, 3 K
    Castillo 0-4
    Durham 0-3
    Molina 0-3
    Visquel 0-2, BB
Those are the only current Giants with batting records against Maine! Those numbers are awesome! Lets see Maine replicate those numbers tonight and lead the Mets to a series win!

Living in Baltimore, I don't get the Mets games on TV. Tonight, I was staying up to see how Pedro was doing via Gameday on the computer, and watching the Daily Show on TV. Now I don't want politics to enter this blog. Jon Stewart was interviewing Terry McAuiffe, who is a huge Hilary Clinton supporter. I am sure you have all heard by now that Obama has locked up the nominee spot in a numerical sense. Even with that, Terry was extremely excited about how Clinton was going to be the nominee of the Democratic Party. To this Stewart responded somewhere along these lines:  I am a big Mets fan, and last year, the Mets went through a historic collapse…now use your enthusiasm to convince me the Mets won the World Series last year.
I am sure the clip will be up some time tomorrow on the Daily Show website.

Although Reyes didn't get a hit tonight, it was still a pretty good game. The main issues or criticisms I would have about tonight is that the Mets did not get anything together. Then Schowenwies, who has been effective this year, lost his ability to close out the game with a 6 run lead, and Wagner had to come in for a two pitch save.
This was a good day for Pedro. He struggled, he allowed three runs. But at the end of the day, he got a quality start and the Mets won. The Pedro offense was also a nice touch tonight.

Hopefully the Mets will able to put last night behind them and forget about it as they sent he energy man, one of the most exciting players to watch in baseball, Pedro Martinez. The Giants will the recently good Barry Zito on the mound.
The Mets get the honor of playing a Barry Zito on a hot stretch in 2008. In the past two games he has a win over 12.1 innings and an ERA of 2.92. Overall on the season, Zito has pitched 11 games with a record of 1-8 over 57 innings and has an ERA of 5.53. He was very good against the Mets in 2007 getting two wins in as many games while walking 2 and striking out 12, posting and ERA of 2.08 over 13 innings. The Mets hitters haven't faired well against him:
    Beltran 6-32, 2B, .188
    Delgado 4-19, 2B, 9 K
    Wright 2-6
    Reyes 1-6, 2B
These numbers are really not pleasant. Hopefully Beltran will be able to channel the past weekend to tonight and lets hope Reyes will continue to swing the bat well.
Pedro! Pedro! Pedro! If he is effective tonight, and if he stays healthy, hopefully that plus a combination of the intangibles he provides will jump start this Mets team. He really hasn't played the Giants in recent years but here are some stats of Giant players against Pedro!

If he can replicate these numbers tonight and we could be in for a low scoring game tonight.

Minor League Teams as many of you know have great promotions and giveaway's throughout the season. The first promotion I want to talk about is not special to June, in fact if you live in Tucson, you can enjoy this promotion every Monday. The Tucson Sidewinders, for an additional fee of $7, offer all-you-can-eat spaghetti and meatballs. All-you-can-eat promotions are always cool, and thats on top of how this one is highlighting a non-traditional baseball food. That is why this promotion landed on this list.
The next promotion has already been highlighted before, but I loved it so much I wanted to restate it. Last night and on the 10th is are the two guaranteed win nights offered by the Frederick Keys. If the Keys don't win on those games, all people in attendance get tickets to another Keys home game. I really love the idea of this promotion.
The River Bandits on June 13th will be hosting Elvis Night.
On June 26th, the Mississippi Braves will be throwing shirts into the crowd that read “Fight the Bite Mississippi”, as part of mosquito awareness night. This reminds me of the Emerald Ash Borer awareness information they give out at Bowie Baysox games.
Finally, Durham is going to showcase USA baseball at the end of June. Between the 27th and the 29th, USA will be playing three games with team Chinese Taipei. I love when International Baseball is supported, which is why this three game set made the list this month.

The Mets will try for three in a row tonight as they go west to San Francisco. The Mets will be sending out Oliver Perez tonight, who will hopefully give us a Dr. Jekyll tonight rather than his Mr. Hyde. Perez will be facing Jonathan Sanchez, the 25 year old Left handed pitcher for the Giants.
Sanchez represents that young, unknown pitcher, that usually gives the Mets fits. He faced the Mets in 2006 for 1.2 innings of relief where he allowed no hits, no runs, no walks and struck no one out. He ultimately got the win in that game. On the season, Sanchez is 3-3 over 11 games and 61.1 innings pitched. He has an ERA of 4.26 this season. There really are no stats for Mets batters against him. Scheneider has the most AB's with 3, getting no hits. Chuch has 2 PA's, with an RBI and BB. Besides that a few other Mets have had one PA or AB resulting in no hits. Here are some splits on Sanchez's season:
    Right Handed Batters: .250 BA
    Left Handed Batters: .220 BA
    Home 6 G, 2.78 ERA
    Away 5 G, 6.31 ERA
His Home and Away ERA split worries me, but an energized Mets team should hopefully damage him.
Perez has not been spectacular in his last two starts. He has a no decision for both of those starts, the earlier resulting in a loss to the Rockies and the later one resulting in a 7-6 win over the Marlins. During those two games, Perez pitched 11 innings, allowed 9 earned runs (7.36 ERA), walked 12 and struck out 9. If he can stay away from a bad inning tonight, then he should be fine (most of his damage generally comes in one emotionally crushing inning). In 2007, he pitched against the Giants twice to the tune of an 0-1 record over 11.2 innings an ERA of 3.86. He walked 2 and struck out 9 over those two games. Here are some Giant stats against Perez:
    Aurilia 7-31, 2B, 3B, 4 HR, 10 RBI
    Rowand 4-13, 2B, 5 K
    Vizquel 1-8
    Molina 2-5
Aurilia's line is interesting to look at because his BA is not great against Perez, but 6 out of 7 times he has gotten a hit, it has been for extra bases, including 4 jacks. Goal of the night: keep Aurilia in the park.
