MLB Division Series Preview October 6th

Started with 30 teams, now we are down to 8 teams and those 8 will begin the elimination march down to 4 today as the ALDS and the NLDS get underway. If you don't have a job, or are not a student, or are just playing hooky, you will get to see a full slate of three games today with one starting at 1:30, another one at 5:00 and finally a nightcap at 8:30. Here's a minipreview for what you could be watching about today:

American League Division Series:

The first game on slate for today features the Texas Rangers visiting the Tampa Bay Rays in what could be a really good game today. For the Rays you have phenom Fall pitcher David Price going up against one of the most coveted pitchers in Cliff Lee. Both teams feature explosive offenses to counter these powerful pitchers. Hopefully the Trop (its still Tropicana Field right?) will be filled today as the Rays look to use homefield advantage (if they can really get that) + their ability to hit lefty pitching to take the first game of this series.

The second ALDS game is also the last game of today and it will feature CC vs Liriano. In some regards this really could be Liriano's welcome back to the National stage party. When he first came up he was hailed as the next great pitcher but injuries held him back. After a successful 2010 campaign, he is ready to show the World that he is what he thought he could be. CC will be representing the 2009 World Series Champions as they look to repeat. I think I speak for almost all the Mets fans out there when I say, “Go Twins”.

National League Division Series

The middle game todya is probably the one I'm most excited and nervous about. In a post-season setting, the Phillies are set up to win as their first three starters can really carry this team. In order for the Reds to have a shot of winning this series, they must take this first game (which is in Philly) where Halladay is starting. If they can prevent momentum from forming, then they will have a legitimate chance of winning the Division Series. If Philly wins today, it looks almost certain that they will win this series.

The Not-So-Good Moments of the 2010 Mets Season

Just like how the Mets had a good amount of nice surprises this season, they had some disappointments, and some situations that people knew would be bad from the start (looking at you Gary Matthews Jr). Here are some of the perplexing, complicated, frustrating moments of the 2010 Mets season:

1. Oliver Perez

The rest of these will be in no specific order, however Oliver Perez is at the top of this list. After hearing so much about how he was ready to comeback, etc, etc etc, he really wasn't at all and would add to the headache. The problem with Perez was it was almost immediately obvious that he needed some extra work, but he wouldn't take the minor league option (which is his right to refuse). Refusing the option though, led to a backlash against him. There were times when the Mets were still hanging around in the race that we really could have used another pitcher, but we didn't have that thanks to Perez. The Mets front office, for reasons that will probably never be fully clear other than the Mets being concerned over their money, didn't cut Perez so he was so infrequently used. The situation just makes me sick, especially because Team is really what I want to focus on right now.

2. Gary Matthews Jr.

He was the starting CF'er coming out of Spring Training. How? This was stupid. Everyone knew it.

3. Mike Jacobs / Tatis

Starting him was just disappointing. He got the job due to the Murphy injury and then he was put in a platoon with Tatis which just sucked the offense out of 1B. On the positive side, their ineptitude is what brought us Ike Davis.

4. Krod

You already know why.

5. Maine

We all had really high hopes for Maine coming into this season, but it just wasn't meant to be. What is sad is Maine had so much promise at one point in time, and it is vanishing fast. I'm hoping that I'm wrong about Maine, and that he can turn it around, but at this point, I need to see improvement to believe it.

6. The Entire Offense

When it comes down to it, the big problem this season ended up being the opposite of what we thought going into the seaosn. At times this year the offense just looked awful. On paper it was so much better due to Beltran and Bay but both of them not playing to their historic numbers really hurt the Mets. Hopefully things will return to the status quo next season for those players who are returning.

Did I miss anyone? Let me know in comments!

And So Begins A New Era in Mets History

Well this is an exciting feeling. I haven't actually felt this way since 2005 and 2006. Remember back then when the Mets said they were so sick of losing they felt the need for a complete regime change. Yeah that was a good time (seriously). It was an interesting off season because it felt like that time right before Spring Training from October through February.

I'm excited again.

After three straight seasons of feeling pretty bad after the Mets season, I feel pretty good today. It feels like a new beginning and I'm really excited to get going, as if last season really didn't matter, it was just a precursor for the next show.

That is where we are now.

The Mets didn't exactly start the next era today, but they definetely ended the current one. By sending off Jerry and Omar, as an organization, we are ready to go in a fresh new direction. Jerry and Omar do deserve credit. Jerry did a great job reversing the 2008 season when he came in, and last season was not his fault, but this team really needs a fresh leader. Omar also did a great job at times and a bad job at times (more on that later this week). He brought in some great pieces in 2005 and 2006, he made some good trades over his regime (most recently the Pagan trade) but he has also made some bad signings (more recently) and some bad trades (Heath Bell).

But now we begin the search for new leaders, and its really exciting.

Lets Go Mets!

MLB 2010 Playoff's Preview

For the first year since 2006, I'm going to actually follow the playoffs. For obvious reasons I didn't follow it in 2007 and 2008, it just hurt too much and last year, as soon as the Twins were eliminated, I immediately stop watching. However this year, I'm going to try to stomach it all the way through, mainly because I want more material to write about so the content on this website just isn't about the future manager and the future GM. Anyway the Playoff's start on Weds with the following match-ups:

Texas @ Tampa
New York @ Minnesota
Cincinnati @ Philly
Atlanta @ San Francisco

The following is not my Prediction, but just my Dream:

Division Series:

Tampa over Texas
Minnesota over New York
Cincinnati over Philly
San Francisco over Atlanta

Championship Series

Tampa over Minnesota
Cincinnati over San Francisco

World Series

Tampa over Cincinnati

Now how I think it will actually go down:

Division Series:

Texas over Tampa
Minnesota over New York
Philly over Cincinnati
San Francisco over Atlanta

Championship Series

Minnesota over Tampa
San Francisco over Philly

World Series

San Francisco over Minnesota

In other words, I'm banking on San Francisco's pitching to carry them, and the Phillies offense to stifle. If Philly beats San Fran, I think they then, sadly, win the entire thing.

Mets Positive Surprises in 2010

Well for a second straight season, the Mets end essentially in wimper. While ending in this way is easier to handle than ending like the Hindenburg in 2007 and 2008, these quiet endings leave a lot to be desired. Essentially we were expecting fireworks each of the last two seasons and at times we really just stalled out due to injuires, bad chemistry (the politest way I could phrase the Oliver Perez situation) and just overall poor team construction.

This season was a wild one in the beginning with long streaks, but with a small collapse in July, the trailing two months have just sotra dragged out. There is a lot to think about, and we have a while to think about things right now. Today let's focus on the postives of 2010. The few players that really came into being and hopefully will plug up holes for the near and far future:

1) Josh Thole.

The beginning of the season was great at the catcher position. Barajas and Blanco did a really good job of splitting the work behind the plate. At the start Barajas had a lot of pop but he trailed off starting in May and just kick started an offense black hole in the catcher spot. Thole was then recalled and he was fantastic. He demonstrated that he can not only play his position but that he can also hit the ball to all areas and has some small pop. I'm interested to see if they can move him in the lineup next season (maybe 2nd in the order). One thing should hopefully be for sure in that we don't need a new starting catcher.

2) Ike Davis

You know what feels like a century ago? Tatis and Jacobs starting first base. Ike Davis has been a huge assest for the Mets who have been looking for a young player who can swing the bat to take over first base bag. Yes this displaces Dan Murphy, but Ike Davis is a real long term solution. I'm excited to see what he brings in his sophomore season.

3) R.A. Dickey

The only misfit here in this list because of his age. Dickey came out of no where this year to save the rotation. He was the most reliable starter on the roster and was probably one of the best to listen to Mets. See last week's Thank you note to him for my full opinion.

4) Ruben Tejada

As of right now, I would say that 2nd base is Tejada's to lose. With the Mets high amount of prospects and young players at 2nd base, it should be one area that they should not try to fill next season, and they need to get rid of Castillo. Between Tejada, who is defensive whiz and maybe the bat is coming, Turner, Valdespin, Hernandez and posibbly Murphy, the Mets should be covered in some extent at 2B next season.

5) Angel Pagan

Pagan finally has had the season that many people thought he would have. Needing to step up in a big way this season, Pagan has answered all of his critics with the bat and really with base running knowledge becoming one of the best on the team. A tremendous benefit in every corner of the field and every aspect of the game, Pagan will not only go down as one of the best players of the year and our probable starting CF'er next year, but also one of the best trades by Omar Minaya, who traded for him giving up Corey Coles.

One Day We Will Look Back at Game 162 And Laugh

Eventually today's game will be funny in some sort of sick, poetic justice kind of funny.

Like many games this season, today featured basically 0 offense for the Mets. The starting pitching was fantastic, the relief pitching was fantastic but it got a point that the Mets found themselves in the 14th inning with the game tied at 1. At this point, Jerry had to call on Oliver Perez, who hadn't been used since August 27th.

At this point in time, I knew what the story was going to be for this last game article. It was going to be an unreal bizzaro world where the villain on the Mets would get the win, or the villain on the Mets would cement himself in the role he has managed to put himself in this season. First batter he struck out (with a very sarcastic MVP chant to follow), then he managed to fill the bases and then walk in the winning run. HE WALKED IN THE WINNING RUN THAT ENDED 2010.

Seriously, how oddly, disgustingly, disturbingly fitting way for this season to end.

The Mets had many chances to win this game today, and thanks to the offense, the pen had to be perfect. The only pitcher who could possibly make the loss about him and not the bats would be Oliver Perez. By walking in the run, he ended the season in the most awful, but predictable way.

In other words, its like you are at a bar and you get into a sports talk with some random stranger. And you know the guy is an idiot. He sees a player he hates and he tells you this overdramatic way the pitcher is going to screw up the game. You know the pitcher is terrible, but there is no way the pitcher is that terrible that he is going to make this idiot at the bar seem like Nostradamus. The pitcher does allright, and you can confidently tell the idiot that maybe his hate is out of proportion. Normally that would be how today would have gone. Perez was so inept today that he made that obliverated idiot seem like Peter Gammons. Unreal Perez. Unreal.

Well, here's to the offseason. I'm excited for changes, and the inevitable return of baseball in 2011 filled with optimism and hope. Starting tomorrow morning here at 213, I will be going over the highlights and the low-lights of this season in anticipation for Spring Training, because baseball never stops here.
