The Mets and the Reds start a series tonight as Dickey will take on Leake. David Wright has now had three straight games with 2 RBI's since returning from the DL including a big homer yesterday (that was erased by Parnell). On the season Dickey is 4-8 with a 3.80 ERA. He has struggled in his last two starts as he has allowed 13.1 innings allowing 8 earned runs. Believe it or not, over his career, Dickey has never faced the Reds, however a few players have stats against him:

The Mets will be facing Mike Leake tonight who is 8-5 this season with a 4.11 ERA. In the month of July, he has made three starts. The Mets and Marlins play the rubber game today as the Mets will try to take a series in Miami. The big game story for today will be SS as Turner will be getting the start there while Reyes gets the day off (as of 9:41, when this article was written). The Mets will try to give Gee some run support today as he tries to dismantle the Marlins lineup.

Dillon Gee is 9-3 on the season with a 3.67 ERA. He made his first really strong start in a while last time out as he pitched 7 innings of 2 earned run ball. In his short career, he has never faced the Marlins (really, even though they are a team in the NL East). The only player on the Marlins that has seen him is Infante who is 0-4 career against Gee.

The Mets will get a look a familiar foe today in Anibal Sanchez who is 6-3 this season with a 3.52 ERA. His two starts since the All Star Break has been very good as he has allowed 4 ER in 12.1 innings of work. This will be Sanchez's first start against the Mets this season but in his career he is 4-4 over 9 starts against the Mets with an ERA of 4.53. The Mets have the following numbers against him:

Murphy 3-7, 2B, 3B

First a quick thank you to the reader who noticed that I misspelled Belt in the original article and put Bell. Sorry about that.

As the day has gone on, it does not seem as if a Beltran trade will happen today, and now I may retract my original prediction that it will happen in the next 48 hours. The Giants are interested, and are easily the favorites right now. It really looks most likely that G. Brown will be part of the deal, mainly because the Rangers are pushing hard for Beltran, so the Giants, if they win, will have to part with Gary Brown.

I have a feeling this may drag on for the better part of the upcoming week.

There have been several reports, a few of them contradicting at this point, that Beltran has been, or will be traded to the Giants in the immediate future. Essentially right now, it boils down to Lennon and Olney. To defend Lennon, he only states that there is increased chatter right now that Beltran will be going to the Giants. Olney says that he does not be believe the trade is imminent at this point, but does believe ultimately that the Giants will the be landing destination. The reports of Beltran being moved to Giants really started to pick up Saturday into Sunday night mainly:

-There were reports of increase chatter among the two teams

-It's no secret that the Giants really want Beltran, possibly more than the Braves and Phillies

-Gary Brown, the most likely Giants prospect that would be involved with the trade, was pulled from his game last night

-A Report came out yesterday that the Braves won't part with their top pitching, which is what they will need to get Beltran

-A Report came out yesterday that for teams protecting top prospects, Reed Johnson is available

-The Giants really need a big offensive piece, so a R. Johnson just won't do it.

I am in the camp that sees Beltran ultimately going to the West Coast. As much as I would like him to go to the Phillies so the Mets could get Dominique Brown, it doesn't seem at this point that will happen. The Giants have been leaning towards not giving up their best prospects, like Belt (but really, the Mets don't have a place for Bell who is a power first basement) and it seems like Gary Brown fits the Mets style.

Gary Brown is the type of player that puts the ball in play. There are two Mets right now, Reyes and Murphy, that have been doing that this season and they have been the most consistent, maybe most important parts of our lineup (excluding Beltran). The other piece of news on the street about Brown is he would be a player to be named later in a trade because he was drafted last season and he would have to be moved after the August 1st date (source, Metsblog).

So let's see. I'm hoping that Beltran gets moved today so we know already, but it looks like the Beltran sweepstakes at the latest will last another 48 hours.

Reyes also had two knocks on the night, going 2-6, lowering his BA (seriously). Anyway tonight the Mets look to get behind another trade candidate in Chris Capuano as he goes against Clay Hensley.

Capuano is 8-9 on the season with a 4.16 ERA. In his first start back from the All-Star Break, he allowed 4 ER in 7.2 innings of work. This season, he has faced the Marlins twice, allowing 5 ER in 8.1 innings of work. The Marlins have the following numbers against him:

Cameron 4-10, 2 HR

Helms 1-7. 2B

Hensley will be making his second start on the year today. So far this year he has pitched in 21 games, with a 2.70 ERA in 20.0 innings of work. His first start of the season was against the Mets as he held the Amazins scoreless for 5 innings of work. The Mets have the following numbers on Clay:

Beltran is still on the team, so if everything holds out today, tonight be one of those rare games where the Mets have Reyes, Beltran and now David Wright. This starts the transition period of responsibility from Beltran to Wright as the inevitable trade of Carlos looms. Anyway, Pelfrey will be pitching for the Mets while Volstad takes the mound for the Marlins.

Pelfrey is 5-9 this season with a 4.69 ERA. His first start after the All-Star break was rough as he pitched 5.0 innings allowing 4 earned runs. On the season he has pitched 11.1 innings against the Marlins with a 4.76 ERA, so essentially his season numbers. The Marlins have the following numbers on Big Pelf:

The Mets go for the sweep this afternoon against the Cardinals. Last night the Mets won in dramatic fashion as they hit a walk off shot in the bottom of the 10th off the bat of Angel Pagan. Jon Niese gets the start for the Mets and he is 9-7 with a 3.73 ERA. In the month of July he has pitched 20.1innings with a 3.98 ERA.
