Game Preview: Mets @ Pirates

The Mets will try to put last night behind them as they take on the Pirates in game two of this series. Last night’s game was filled with errors for the Mets as they had a 4-0 lead at one point and just watched the lead slip away. The Mets will try to get on the consistent, right track behind R.A. Dickey tonight as he takes on James McDonald.

Dickey is 5-1 on the season with a 3.75 ERA. In the month of May he has made three starts with a 2-0 record over 20.0 innings and a 2.70 ERA. Last season Dickey was the hard luck loser against the Pirates as he was 0-2 over two starts while pitching 15.2 innings with a 2.30 ERA. The Pirates have the following numbers against Dickey:

McCutchen 2-9
Tabata 3-9, 2B
Jones 4-10, 2B
McGehee 1-10
Alvarez 1-3

The Mets bats will look to score some run support off of James McDonald who is 3-2 over 50.1 innings of work with an ERA of 2.68. In the month of May he made three starts with a 2-1 record over 20.0 innings and a 2.25 ERA. In 2011 he was 1-0 in two starts against the Mets where he pitched 12 innings while allowing 3 ER. The Mets have the following numbers against McDonald:

Wright 2-6
Davis 3-6, 3 2B
Duda 0-6
Murphy 3-6
Torres 1-5, 2B

Mets Struggle in Pittsburgh Since 2004

For some reason the Mets do not play well in Pittsburgh. Below I pulled out the Mets numbers when the play Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh all the way back to 2004, when David Wright joined the team. Over that time, the Mets went from horrible, to awesome, to horrible. The Pirates over that time have just been horrible.

2012: 0-1 @ Pitsburgh
2011: 2-2 @ Pittsburgh
2010: 2-1 @ Pittsburgh
2009: 0-3 @ Pittsburgh
2008: 3-1 @ Pittsburgh
2007: 2-1 @ Pittsburgh
2006: 0-3 @ Pittsburgh
2005: 1-2 @ Pittsburgh
2004: 1-2 @ Pittsburgh

Total: 11-15

I know its only 4 games below .500, but you are talking about the Pirates of the last decade. A winning team should be over .500 against the Pirates, and at least 4 games over.

Just numbers for thoughts.

Manufactured Rivals (Majestic Athletics)

Earlier today I saw a picture via The 7 Line on twitter, that speaks a lot to an aspect of baseball I don’t like.

If you can’t click the link, its a picture of a shirt being sold by Majestic Athletics for the Philies that says “My Brother is 8 Maybe He Can Pitch For The Mets”

Before we even dive into a discussion based in Sports Sociology on what this shirt represents, we should probably establish how stupid that shirt is. Yes, I’m a biased source being a Mets fan, but my High School students can think of a more entertaining insult than that shirt hurls.

It’s actually how bad that shirt is that starts off our conversation about sociology behind the shirt. The shirt isn’t funny because it isn’t genuine. The tone of the shirt looks to be a playful jab at the Phillies rival, but its without any substance so it just doesn’t feel real. In other words, since you can replace the word “Mets” and replace it with any other team, shirt just feels wrong.

Its the lack of specific reference to either team (specific meaning current topics around either team), compounded with Majestic being a major corporate supplier of baseball merchandise and apparel that makes the whole concept lose its authenticity.

Look at The 7 Line for example. The 7 Line is successful because its awesome. They are awesome because the creator, Darren Meenan, is a fan and you can sense his love of the Mets through the shirts. When he creates a clever shirt, it isn’t just a clever line but a clever line from someone that also loves the Mets. In a way, we all co-create meaning from his shirts because they are based on experiences as fans that we all have simultaneously.

When we look at the Majestic shirt and then at fan made shirts like the The 7 Line, what we really see is the difference between a fan creating a work of meaning for the team he loves vs a corporation attempting to make meaningful relationship with the fans where the relationship is purely financial.

This isn’t just restricted to the Mets. In Baltimore the version of this story is the Boh Knows Baseball and Free the Birds. The Orioles tried to create it’s own meaningful space with Eutaw Street 2110 which was (and I think is) a series of shirts and events celebrating Jones and Markakis, but it doesn’t resonate with fans the same way that Boh’s and Free the Bird does (for all the reasons mentioned above).

When I first saw The 7 Line’s tweet, I immediately thought back to my time in College at the University of Maryland. As a young, misguided Senior in High School, the first (and only shirt) I bought from the University’s bookstore was a rivalry shirt that they made. I never wore it in college. It just felt so forced. Being at the school made the shirt lose its cleverness, and looking at it made me feel like outsider trying to become an insider at my own university. I ended collecting a much better series of T-Shirts made by students that reflected the authentic feelings of the campus in shirt form.

So in conclusion, Majestic Athletics’ rivalry shirt shows the divide in communities where one is tied by shared fan experience, and the other by pure consumerism.

Game Preview: Mets @ Pirates

The Amazin’s travel stateside today as they open up a three game set in Pittsburgh. The Mets stopped their slide in Toronto yesterday by sneaking past the Blue Jays by the score of 6-5. You already know the story, because it happens often, but the Mets had a lead, the starter went out, and the bullpen had a collective, “Hey, let’s give the Jays some hope”. Anyway Santana gets the nod for the Mets as he takes on Bedard and Bucs tonight.

Johan Santana is 1-2 on the season with a 2.89 ERA over 8 starts and 43.2 innings of work. Johan is 1-0 over three starts in May pitching 19.2 innings with a 3.66 ERA. Back in 2010 he pitched 8 innings against the Mets allowing 4 hits and 2 earned runs while striking out 9. The Pirates have the following numbers against Santana:

McLouth 2-15, 2B, HR
McGehee 2-10, 2 2B
Barajas 2-7
McCutchen 0-4
Alvarez 2-3
Barmes 0-3

The Mets draw Erik Bedard tonight, who is 2-5 this season with a 3.07 ERA over 8 starts over 41.0 innings of work. He has made one start against the Mets in his career where he allowed 3 ER over 6 innings allowing 3 hits and 3 walks while striking out 6. The Mets have the following numbers on Bedard:

Hairston 3-10
Johnson 0-3
Wright 1-2

2012 Uniform Change: San Francisco Giants Golden Gate Badge

The Golden Gate Bridge turned 75 this year and the entire Bay Area is celebrating (seriously, there’s a site dedicated to it and everything). A post on Uni Watch Blog had a picture that showed the Giants sporting the 75th Anniversary Patch as part of the celebration:

I did some research and you can’t buy this patch from the Giants website, however, you can purchase it from the Gold Gate Bridge 75th website. If you really love the bridge and buy the patch, you are saving about 10 dollars from the price of a normal MLB specialty patch.

As for the patch itself, it looks really nice, goes with the Giants jersey and is all around just a classy patch. I wouldn’t be adverse to the Giants wearing this patch at home all season as a celebration of the city.

Sunday Roster Move: Schwinden is Back, Batista on the DL

The Mets pitching staff went through another change today as Miguel Batista was placed on the 15 day DL. The Mets have activated Chris Schwinden from the Taxi Squad to take his place on the roster.

Schwinden has been a much different pitcher in the minors than the majors. In the minors this season he is 3-2 over 7 games and 39.0 innings of work with an ERA of 2.54. In the majors he has pitched 8 innings over 2 start with a 11.25 ERA.

Personally, I would like to see Hefner get the starting spot in the rotation. He has already put together two nice performances in the majors, and he was used as a starter in the minors. On the season he has made 7 starts with a 3-2 record with a 2.72 ERA over 46.1 innings.

Hefner and Schwinden have similar minor league numbers, and drastically different major league numbers, albeit a very, very small sample size. Realistically, we are looking at two, maybe one or three starts either pitcher would have to make as Chris Young is slated to make his debut in earlier June.

Game Preview: Mets @ Blue Jays

The Mets look to avoid a sweep and three losses in a row as they take on the Blue Jays this afternoon. Yesterday the Mets received good pitching as after Batista left with an injury, Hefner turned in a great performance and the bullpen kept the Mets in the entire game. The lineup however, with some “help” from the umpires, never got it going and the Mets fell 2-0. Dillon Gee will help the Mets move beyond that today as he takes on Henderson Alvarez.

Dillon Gee is 2-3 on the season with a 5.63 ERA over 43.0 innings of work. He is coming off two bad starts in a row where he has pitched a combined 11.o innings and allowed 11 ER (still striking out 8 though). In his young career, he has never faced the Blue Jays however he has faced two players in the Jays lineup. Kelly Johnson, the former Brave, is 0-3 against Gee lifetime while Ben Francisco is 0-1. Basically, as it is to be expected in interleague series for young players, Gee will be a mystery for the Blue Jays.

The theme of mystery continues with the Blue Jays pitcher as the Mets get Henderson Alvarez today. Henderson is 3-3 with a 2.62 ERA in 2012 over 55.0 innings of work. In his last two starts, he has pitched 13.2 innings with a 1.98 ERA, a number that drops much lower when you include his first start in May which was a complete game shutout. With all of the homegrown talent in the Mets lineup, it isn’t surprising that not a single Mets batter has any major league experience against Henderson.

Game Preview: Mets @ Blue Jays

Last night’s game was a stinker. This afternoon the Mets look to bounce back as they take on the Blue Jays for game two. Anyway, in this afternoon’s game Miguel Batista will get the call for the Mets as he takes on Brandon Morrow. Batista is coming off of an amazing start and he will look to continue today. He is 1-1 with a 4.26 ERA over 25.1 innings of work. In his last two starts he has pitched 12.1 innings with an ERA of 1.46. He is 3-2 against the Blue Jays lifetime over 42.0 innings of work and a 1.70 ERA. The Jays have the following numbers against Batista:

Vizquel 10-24
Bautista 2-9
Francisco 2-8, 2B, HR
Mathis 1-5

The Mets bats will get a look at Brandon Morrow today who is 4-2 this season with a 2.22 ERA over 8 starts and 52.1 innings of work. He is coming off his first rough start in a while as he allowed 6 ER over 5 innings of work. He has logged barely any time against the Mets in his career as he has one scoreless inning against the Amazins. Only three Mets have numbers against Morrow:

Cedeno 2-3
Hairston 0-3
Torres 1-3

Change is Coming: Jeremy Hefner To Be Promoted

It looks like the Mets will be making another bull pen change this week as it is rumored that Jeremy Hefner will be promoted. If he is promoted, he is most likely going to replace Manny Acosta. Acosta has been a head scratcher with the Mets. At first, he was great. Then he started off last year as a frustration. At the tale end of last year, he was unhittable. This year, he has been mostly been terrible. Anyway, these are Acosta’s numbers with the Mets:

2010: 3-2, 2.95 ERA, 39.2 IP, 2 BS
2011: 4-1, 3.45 ERA, 47.0 IP, 3 BS
2012: 1-2, 10.53 ERA, 19.2 IP, 1 BS

On the flip side, Hefner had a fantastic major league debut where he pitched 3.0 IP just allowing one walk. These are some of his recent minor league numbers:

Career: 49-36, 3.77 ERA, 735.0 IP
2012: 3-2, 2.72 ERA, 46.1 IP

This season Hefner has been really turning it on in the minors, and the Mets could use another spot starter in the pen, since their current one is actually in the pen.

If this move happens, I’m for it. It seems like the right time for change in the Mets pen.

UPDATE:
The move happened but not as expected. Hefner was promoted but Valdespin was sent down. This is probably best for Valdespin but that doesn’t help the Mets issues in the pen as Acosta is still an option for Terry to use. I still stick with the idea of getting rid of Acosta, especially if he doesn’t turn it around by the end of the month.

Game Preview: Mets @ Blue Jays

The Mets make the journey up north to America’s Hat to open up an interleague series against the Toronto Blue Jays tonight. The Mets split each of their last two series and finally got firing on all cylinders yesterday as they rolled past the Reds by a score 9-4. The Mets made a comeback bid, went for the kill in the bottom of the eighth and then held it for the ninth. In tonight’s game, Niese will get the start against Ricky Romero.

Niese is 2-1 over 7 starts and 39.2 innings with an ERA of 3.40. In his last two starts he has pitched 11.0 innings with 2 ER. Niese has never faced Toronto, which makes sense. Despite never actually facing the Jays, Niese has some numbers against some current members of Toronto’s ball club:

Francisco: 3-12
Johnson 4-10, 2B
Escobar 0-2
Mathis 0-2

Romero is 4-1 on the season over 8 starts and 53.1 innings of work. In his last three starts he is 1-1 with a 5.12 ERA where he pitched 19.1 innings of work where he allowed 11 ER. He walked and striked out 13 batters over those 19.1 innings. Being a Blue Jay his entire career means he has never faced the Mets. It’s not surprising that the Mets have limited exposure to Ricky:

Hairston 2-6
Johnson 1-3
Cedeno 0-3
Turner 1-1
