Game Preview: Marlins vs Mets

The Mets try to…do something after yesterday.

The Mets got excellent pitching throughout the entire game. Harvey started off well, the bullpen took over well and then Marcum got in 8 innings where he, in a twisted decree of fate, allowed only one earned run in the top of the 20, and the Mets couldn’t do anything. Anyway, Jon Niese looks to keep the good pitching going today as he takes on Tom Koehler.

Jon Niese is 3-5 over 11 starts and 61.1 innings with a 4.40 ERA. Jon has really turned it on in his last three starts posting an ERA of 1.33 over a stretch of 20.1 innings. In that stretch he has walked only 6 and struck out 14 batters. In his one start against the Marlins this year he allowed 8 hits, 2 earned runs and one unearned over 6.0 innings of work. The Marlins have the following numbers against him:

Polanco 12-35, 5 2B
Coghlan 2-10, 2B
Ruggiano 2-8
Dobbs 1-4
Olivo 1-3

Tom Koehler is 0-4 this season over 11 games and 5 starts with 41.1 innings while posting a 3.40 ERA. He has pitched 30.0 innings as a starter with a 3.90 ERA. He pitched 3.0 innings against the Mets allowing 1 hit, no runs while striking out 5 batters. The Mets have the following numbers against him:

Murphy 1-5
Baxter 1-3, 2B
Davis 1-3, 2B
Duda 0-3
Wright 0-3

2013 Uniform Changes: USA and World Jerseys for the 2013 All-Star Game

Ever wanted a USA jersey that was Mets themed? Well, now you can get it! Pictures of the USA/World uniforms for the Future’s Game have finally gone online:

Like the American/National uniforms, these look good.

I was worried about the USA jersey before seeing it, since it only has three letters and needed to span the skyline, but they did a good job spacing the letters.

Game Preview: Marlins vs Mets

Last night’s game was rained out as the tri-state area turned into the Atlantic Ocean East…or at least Newark did. Anyway today’s pitching matchup is the same as yesterday’s and yesterday’s game will be made up as a single admission doubleheader on September 14th.

The Marlins come back to Citi Field tonight as the Mets look for vengeance after being swept by the Marlins last weekend. There’s not a lot of certainty in this series thanks to Mother Nature. Last night’s game was rained out and the current plan is to have Harvey still start to night, move Marcum tomorrow and have Niese go on Sunday. It’s also supposed to rain today, and tonight, and early tomorrow, so we’ll see what happens with the schedule. Anyway Harvey goes up against a familiar foe in Jose Fernandez.

Matt Harvey is 5-0 over 12 starts and a 2.17 ERA while pitching 83.0 innings with 89 strikeouts. His last outing was quite human as he allowed 10 hits and 4 ER over 5.0 innings against the Marlins, so he is searching for revenge tonight. The Marlins have the following numbers against Harvey:

Pierre 5-11
Dobbs 1-5, 2B
Brantly 2-5
Polanco 0-4
Coghlan 3-3, 2B
Fernandez 0-2

Jose Fernandez is 3-3 with a 3.34 ERA over 11 games and 59.1 innings of work in his rookie season so far. Tonight will be his 4th start of the season against the Mets, and we are barely out of the first week of June. Seriously this guy pitches against the Mets 33% of the time. So far against the Mets this year he has pitched 16.0 innings with a 1.69 ERA. The Mets have the following numbers against Jose:

Duda 1-6
Murphy 1-7
Davis 0-4
Buck 1-5, HR
Wright 0-5
OMARS COMING. 2-3 (You’ll have to excuse me, The Wire is one of my favorite pieces of all media of all time)

Game Preview: Mets @ Nationals

Stop the presses! The Mets scored a bunch of runs last night while beating the Washington Nationals! While that doesn’t bode well for their run scoring averages for the rest of the week, the Mets look to make it two in a row today as they take on the Nationals for the rubber game. Shaun Marcum gets the nod for the Amazin’s as he faces off against Gio Gonzalez.

Shaun Marcum is 0-6 this season for the Mets with a 5.71 ERA over 41.0 innings of work. His last outing isn’t as bad as his line makes it look (6.2 IP, 4 ER) as for 6 innings he things pretty much on lock but the wheels came off in the 7th (and it didn’t help that the Mets bats were doing nada). This start was on the heels of his 7.0 IP, 2 ER, 12 K performance that was the highlight of his season. He hasn’t faced the Nationals yet this season but last year he pitched 6.0 innings against them allowing 4 hits and 2 ER. The Nationals have the following numbers against him:

Suzuki 1-11
Werth 0-7, 6 K
Span 0-6
Zimmerman 2-6, HR
LaRoche 1-5, HR
Desmond 0-2

Gio Gonzalez is 3-3 this season over 12 starts with a 3.64 ERA and 71.2 innings of work. Gio has been recovering from a rough patch in the middle of April. In his last start he allowed 1 ER over 7 innings of work. Earlier this season he allowed 5 ER over 5 hits and 4.0 innings against the Mets who have the following numbers against him:

Wright 3-11, 3B, HR
Buck 2-12, 2B
Davis 4-12, 2B, HR
Turner 2-13
Byrd 2-8
Murphy 1-6

Game Preview: Nationals @ Mets

The Mets continue their series with the Nationals tonight as they try to look past the last four games. Once again, the Mets offense struggled in a game that was win-able last night. Today, Dillon Gee looks to build off of his last start as he takes on Dan Haren.

Dillon Gee is 3-6 over 11 starts this year with a 5.68 ERA. His last start was by far the best of the season as he allowed only one earned run over 7.1 innings and struck out 12 batters. Terry made a controversial move at the time taking him out in the 8th with a low pitch count (after an impressive streak of K’s) but the move ended up working. In his one start against Washington this year he shutout the Nationals over 5.2 innings of work allowing 3 hits. The Nationals have the following numbers against him:

Desmond 4-17, 2 HR
Espinosa 1-13
Zimmerman 3-15, 2B
Bernadina 2-11, HR
LaRoche 1-8

Dan Haren is 4-6 over 11 starts this year with a 5.09 ERA while pitching 63.2 innings. Things are starting to come together for Haren recently as in his last two starts he has allowed 5 ER over 13.1 innings of work (before that 7 ER over 5 IP). The last time he faced the Mets was back in 2011 where he allowed 6 ER over 4.0 innings and 7 hits. The Mets have the following numbers against Haren:

Byrd 8-16, 2 2B, 3B
Wright 4-16, 2 2B, HR
Buck 2-13
Murphy 2-5, 2B, HR
Davis 0-2

Game Preview: Nationals vs Mets

The Mets look to forget their last series with the Marlins in its entirety as they welcome the Nationals into New York. The last time the Mets were in New York, they swept the Yankees, let’s hope that’s the Mets team we see tonight as Hefner takes the mounds for the Mets and takes on Zimmermann.

Jeremy Hefner is 1-5 this season over 57.0 innings with a 4.74 ERA. In his last two starts he has pitched 12.0 innings with a 3.75 ERA as he has become a more stable part of the Mets rotation (most of the time at least). Against the Nationals earlier this season he allowed 3 ER over 4.0 innings of work. The Nationals have the following numbers against Hefner:

LaRoche 2-10, HR
Espinosa 5-10, 2 2B, 2 HR
Zimmerman 2-8
Desmond 1-8, HR
Lombardozzi 2-6

Jordan Zimmermann is 8-3 over 11 games this season pitching 79.2 innings with a 2.37 ERA and a league leading 3 complete games. Jordan has become one of the best pitchers in baseball this season. He is also coming off of by far his worst start of the season where he allowed 7 ER over 6 innings of work which saw his season ERA jump from 1.71 to 2.37. Earlier this season against the Mets he allowed 2 ER over 5.0 innings of work. The Mets have the following numbers against Jordan:

Wright 9-28, 2 2B, 2 HR
Murphy 7-24, 2 2B, HR
Davis 4-16, 2B, HR
Buck 4-13, 2B, HR
Duda 2-12, 2B
Valdespin 1-7, HR

The Mets look to avoid the sweep by the hands of the Marlins (I’ve probably never wrote a more Mets introduction than that one) this afternoon as Matt Harvey takes the mound against Kevin Slowey. So there’s the good news, it’s Matt Harvey day!

Matt Harvey is 5-0 on the season with a 1.85 ERA over 78.0 innings of work while striking out 84 batters. His last start was a good rebound from his previous start (6.1 IP, 4 ER) which was the worst of the season. The Mets bats could not get anything going in his last start, thus Harvey got the no decision. This will be his second start against the Marlins. Earlier he pitched 5.1 innings allowing 1 ER over 7 hits and struck out 7 batters. The Marlins have the following numbers against Harvey:

Pierre 3-9
Polanco 0-4
Dobbs 1-2, 2B
Brantly 1-2

Kevin Slowey is 1-5 over 11 starts and 62.2 innings with a 3.59 ERA.In the month of May, he was either terrible or fantastic. In that five game stretch he pitched 25.0 innings with a 5.76 ERA. In his one start against the Mets this year he allowed 1 ER over 8 innings. The Mets have the following numbers against him:

Buck 3-11, 2B
Davis 2-6
Wright 2-6, 2B, HR
Baxter 0-3
Byrd 1-3
Duda 2-3, 2B

Game Preview: Mets @ Marlins

First off, a very happy one year anniversary of No-Han to you!

In typical Mets fashion, after winning 4 against the Yankees, they lose against the Marlins. However, today is a new day and hopefully the start of a new streak as Collin McHugh makes a spot start for the Mets tonight against the young Jose Fernandez. Last night the Mets offense was absent…again. Marcum was fine with the exception of one inning when the game went south. Here’s hoping for the bats to come back today.

Collin is making a return to the majors today. This year he has allowed 6 ER over 3.0 innings in two games. Last year he was 0-4 over 8 games and 4 starts over 21.1 innings with a 7.59 ERA. Last year he faced the Marlins for 0.1 innings allowing 2 hits and one earned runs. This year in Vegas he is 3-2 over 8 starts and 49.1 innings while posting a 2.74 ERA. The only two Marlins that have stats against him are Brantly (0-1) and Pierre (1-1).

It is June 1st and for the third time this season, Jose Fernandez will be facing the Mets. On the season he is 2-3 over 10 starts with a 3.78 ERA while pitching 52.1 innings. In two starts against the Mets this year he has pitched 9.0 innings while allowing 3 ER. He is coming off of a rough start start where he allowed 7 runs, 4 earned over 3.1 innings. The Mets have the following numbers against Jose:

Baxter 0-3
Davis 0-2
Duda 0-3
Murphy 1-4
Buck 1-2, HR
Recker 1-2, 2B

Game Preview: Mets @ Marlins

The Kings of New York, fresh off a four game sweep of the Yankees and on a five game winning streak fly down to Miami tonight to face a team that is on a 9 game losing streak while Israel and Honduras come to Citi Field to play soccer (as if you haven’t seen that commercial enough in recent days). Anyway the Mets are on an impressive streak when it comes to starting pitching but really could use their offense to step it up (with the exception Wednesday’s game). Tonight Shaun Marcum gets back on the hill as he takes on Jacob Tuner in his 2013 debut.

Shaun Marcum is 0-5 this season over 7 games, 6 starts with a 5.77 ERA over 34.1 innings. In his last start he pitched 7 innings allowing 2 ER while striking out 12 batters. He only made one bad pitch in that game which turned into a 2 run homer. Hopefully this is the start of something special for Shaun who faced the Marlins earlier this year in relief allowing 2 ER over 1.2 innings. The Marlins have the following numbers against Marcum:

Polanco 6-14, 2 2B
Pierre 3-11, 2B
Mathis 1-8
Dobbs 2-5, 2B
Ruggianno 1-4

Turner, making his season debut, went 1-4 last year over 7 starts and 42.2 innings of work while posting a 3.38 ERA. He had one bad start and one good start against the Mets last season. First he went 5 innings allowing 6 runs, 3 earned and then two starts later allowed only one run over 7.2 innings (#Mets). He is 3-4 over 10 starts with a 4.47 ERA this year in AAA. The Mets have the following numbers against Turner:

Tejada 1-7, 2B
Davis 1-6
Murphy 1-5
Wright 0-5
Duda 1-4
Baxter 1-1
Valdespin 1-1, 2B
