Game Preview: Mets @ Diamondbacks

The Mets look to move beyond a disappointing series in San Diego by trying to pick up the pieces against the Diamondbacks. After winning the first game of the Padres series in a dominant 7-0 fashion, the Mets have dropped the last two games by a score of 7-2 and 7-3. Tonight Matt Harvey looks to stop that.

Matt Harvey is 5-3 with a 3.11 ERA over 10 starts and 66.2 innings with 71 strikeouts. Harvey just made one mistake against the Marlins, which is why he had 4 ER over 8.0 innings. He managed to strikeout 11 batters and went deep into the game. It was his second loss in a row, and his 5th start in a row without a winning decision. In 2013 he faced the Diamondbacks once and it wasn’t pretty as he allowed 5 ER over 6.0 innings. Arizona has the following numbers against Matt:

  • Hill 3-7
  • Delgado 1-3
  • Goldschmidt 0-3
  • Pennington 1-3

The Mets bats will have to deal with Jeremy Hellickson who is 3-3 over 10 starts and 56.2 innings this season with a 5.08 ERA. In his last three starts he is 2-0 over 18.2 innings with a 3.38 ERA, so substantially better than his season numbers. The last time he faced the Mets was way back in 2012 and it was a night to forget if you like Jeremy. He allowed 8 ER over 9 hits in 3.2 innings of work. The Mets have the following numbers against him:

  • Granderson 2-15, 2B, HR
  • Cuddyer 2-8, 2B, HR
  • Duda 1-2, 2B
  • Murphy 0-2

Ready or not, the Mets officially start the 6-man rotation tonight. Last night the Mets received a mix performance from Noah Syndergaard who in turned allowed 7 runs behind only two runs of offense, so now the Mets will turn to Dillon Gee to close the door and make the trip to San Diego a positive one as the squad faces James Shields.

Dillon Gee is returning from a groin injury. Prior to landing on the DL, the there was a growing cry for the Mets to take Gee out of the rotation to replace with Noah Syndergaard and the Mets got to skirt the decision for a few weeks thanks to Gee’s groin. On the season Gee is 0-2 over 5 starts and 30.1 innings with a 3.86 ERA. In his last three starts before hitting the DL he pitched 19.2 innings with a 1.83 ERA. He also posted a 1.62 ERA in 3 rehab starts in the minors this year. Last year his one start against the Padres wasn’t pretty as he allowed 4 ER over 5 hits and 5.0 innings. The Padres have the following numbers against Gee:

  • J Upton 7-26, 2 2B, HR
  • Venable 2-9, 2B, HR
  • Barmes 2-7, 2B
  • Kemp 2-5, 2B
  • Gyorko 1-3, 2B

The Mets bats will get a look at the new San Diego Padre: James Shields, who is 6-0 this season over 11 starts and 68.1 innings with a 3.69 ERA. In his last three starts he has tossed 20.0 innings with a 3.15 ERA. In his career he has made only one start over 7.0 innings where he allowed 3 hits and 1 ER. Only a few Mets have faced Shields:

  • Granderson 7-59, 2 2B, 3B, 2 HR
  • Cuddyer 7-17, 2 2B, HR
  • Mayberry 1-4, 2B
  • Murphy 0-3

The Mets had a great night in San Diego while most of us were sleeping! Jacob deGrom was dominant shutting the Padres bats down (he was actually perfect through 5) and the Mets bats supported him dropping 7 runs including 2 off of a Murphy homer. Tejada continued his strong play from the weekend adding 3 more hits. The last time the Mets scored 7 runs in a game, Syndergaard started which brings us to tonight.

Syndergaard is coming off of the start of his young career where he went 7.1 scoreless innings while going 3-3 at the plate including a homer. On the season he is 2-2 over 4 games and 24.2 innings with a 2.55 ERA while striking out 22 batters. This will be his first time facing anyone on the Padres roster in a major league game, facing the Padres organization and facing and NL West team.

The Mets bats will look to stay hot from last night against Ian Kennedy who is 2-5 over 8 games and 39.0 innings with a 7.15 ERA this season. His season has pretty much routinely alternated between horrible starts and average to good starts (except for one time where he had horrible starts back to back). He’s coming off of a horrible start where he allowed 7 ER over 3.2 innings, so he’s due, probably, for a good start. (Also the majority of his bad starts are at home). In two starts against the Mets last year he was 0-1 over 10.1 innings allowing 13 hits and 7 ER. The Mets have the following numbers against Ian:

  • Cuddyer 4-17, 3 2B, HR
  • Murphy 3-15, 2B, HR
  • Granderson 5-9, HR
  • Duda 2-8, 2 2B
  • Recker 2-7, 2B
  • Mayberry 3-8, 2B, HR
  • Tejada 2-6

The Mets finished their weekend on a high note, avoiding the sweep from the Marlins and now they are only a half game back behind the Nationals for the division lead on the first day of June. Familia really was the star of the game yesterday. A case can be made for Colon or Flores, but it comes down to Familia getting those 5-outs. Tonight the Mets find themselves on the West Coast for the first time this year as they start a series with the new-look Padres.

Jacob deGrom is 5-4 over 10 starts and 63.0 innings with a 2.71 ERA while striking out 63 batters. In his last three starts he is 2-0 over 21.1 innings with a 1.27 ERA and 26 strikeouts. This will be deGrom’s first start against the Padres but there are a few batters who have seen him:

  • J Upton 2-9
  • Kemp 2-6, 2B
  • Solarte 0-3

Andrew Cashner is 2-7 over 10 starts and 63.0 innings with 3.00 ERA. He is coming off of an average start of allowing 3 ER over 7.0 innings vs the Angels after an excellent start (1 run, none earned over 6.0). Last year he allowed 4 ER over 8 hits and 6.0 innings against the Mets who have the following numbers against Andrew:

  • Cuddyer 4-14, 2B, HR
  • Duda 2-5, 2 2B
  • Murphy 0-4
  • Tejada 1-4
  • Granderson 0-3
  • Mayberry 1-1

Game Preview: Marlins vs Mets

The Mets are trying to avoid their second consecutive completely disappointing weekend by beating the Marlins today and sidestepping the sweep. Yesterday Niese got the Mets off into a hole but the offense was able to come roaring back to tie the game 5-5. Then the bullpen had some hiccups and the offense couldn’t string anymore hits. Today Bartolo Colon will try to get things right.

Bartolo is 7-3 over 10 starts and 61.2 innings with a 4.82 ERA. After three bad starts in a row, he had a solid start last time out allowing 3 ER over 6.0 innings while striking out 6. His two starts against the Marlins have been quite different. In his first start he held the Marlins to one earned run over 7.0 innings while striking out 5. In his second start he allowed 9 hits and 4 ER over 6.2 innings. The Marlins have the following numbers against Colon:

  • Suzuki 32-101, 3 2B, 3B, 3 HR
  • Yelich 2-11
  • Gordon 3-9
  • Ozuna 2-10, 2B
  • Hechavarria 3-9, 2 2B
  • Stanton 5-8, 2B, 2 HR
  • Prado 3-7

The Mets bats will deal with David Phelps today who is 2-2 over 10 games and 8 starts over 48.0 innings with a 3.56 ERA. In his last two starts he has allowed 13 hits and 8 ER over 11.0 innings. He’s been pretty good against the Mets this season though where he has logged 10.2 innings with 3 ER and 6 strikeouts. The Mets have the following numbers against Phelps:

  • Duda 1-6
  • Murphy 3-6, 2B
  • Campbell 1-4
  • Granderson 1-5, 2B
  • Lagares 0-5
  • Recker 1-3
  • Cuddyer 0-4

Game Preview: Marlins vs Mets

The Mets offense is odd. They hit two homers last night, but they scored only 3 runs. Its so close to actually clicking, but not just yet. Anyway the Mets lost the opener to the Marlins and they hope to rebound this afternoon.

Jon Niese is 3-5 on the season over 9 starts and 53.0 innings with a 4.08 ERA. It has been a struggle for Niese as of late. In his last three starts he has pitched 16.0 innings and has allowed 16 earned runs. So far this year he has completely missed the Marlins. Last year he was 2-0 in 3 starts against the Fish with a 4.26 ERA over 19.0 innings. The Marlins have the following numbers against Jon:

  • Prado 6-32, 4 2B, 3B
  • Stanton 11-27, 2B, 3 HR
  • Baker 8-20, 2B
  • Hechavarria 4-14
  • Solano 5-14, 2 2B
  • Ozuna 4-10, 2B
  • Yelich 4-10, 2B

The Mets bats will try to put it all together against Tom Koehler who is 3-3 over 10 games, 9 starts and 55.0 innings with a 3.44 ERA. In his last 4 games (3 starts) he has pitched 22.0 innings with a 0.82 ERA, so he is really putting it together now. His only start against the Mets this year was a disaster for him as he allowed 7 ER over 3.1 innings. The Mets have the following numbers against Tom:

  • Murphy 6-24, HR
  • Duda 2-20, 2B
  • Lagares 5-21, 3B
  • Tejada 5-18, 3 2B
  • Granderson 1-11
  • Recker 0-8
  • Cuddyer 2-6, 2B
  • Flores 1-6, 2B

Game Preview: Marlins vs Mets

After a horrible weekend in Pittsburgh where the Mets got swept, they returned the favor the Phillies and now start a series with the Marlins. If there was ever a time the Mets needed a sweep, it was this past series where the wheels started to come off for the club. Now the Mets have a chance to make this a crucial swing home stand behind Matt Harvey as he starts of the series against the Marlins.

Harvey is 5-2 over 9 games this season with a 2.91 ERA over 58.2 innings. He is coming off his worst start of the season, probably his career, where he allowed 7 ER over 4.0 innings to the Pirates and diagnosed with “dead arm” or arm fatigue. In his two previous starts he combined for 15.0 scoreless innings with 18 strikeouts. In his one start against the marlins this year he allowed 4 ER over 6.0 innings while striking out 7. The Marlins have the following numbers against Harvey:

  • Hechavarria 2-10
  • Ozuna 4-9, 3B
  • Prado 2-9
  • Stanton 1-9
  • Solano 3-7
  • Yelich 1-6
  • Gordon 1-3

The Mets bats will get a look at Dan Haren who is 4-2 over 9 starts this seaosn with a 3.09 ERA over 55.1 innings. In his last two starts he has tossed 14.0 innings allowing only 2 ER and striking out 11 batters. This will be his first time against the Mets this season and last year he allowed only 3 hits and 1 ER over 7.0 innings of work. The Mets have the following numbers against Haren:

  • Granderson 9-41, 2 2B, 3 HR
  • Cuddyer 6-34, 2B, HR
  • Murphy 4-17, 2B, HR
  • Lagares 5-12
  • Duda 1-9, 2B
  • Flores 0-2

Game Preview: Phillies vs Mets

The Mets have the chance today to undo the weekend series with Pittsburgh by completing the sweep of the Phillies. In last night’s game, the Mets were cruising through the first seven innings thanks to terrific pitching from Jacob deGrom and one inning of offensive output. The bullpen then blew the game in top of the 8th (even giving deGrom earned runs) and even allowed the go ahead run. The Mets fought back, tying the game in the bottom of the frame and getting the walk-off in the 10th.

Noah Syndergaard looks to shut the door on the Phillies this afternoon. He is 1-2 over 3 starts with a 3.63 ERA in 17.1 innings of work and 16 strikeouts. For Noah, it will be his first start against an NL East team after three starts against NL Central teams. His best start remains his best where he allowed 1 ER over 6.0 innings. In his last start, he had two innings where he allowed 2 runs each (only 3 total were earned), despite that he looked good.

Sean O’Sullivan is on the bump for the Phillies today. He is 1-3 over 5 starts over 28.0 innings and a 3.54 ERA. He is coming off back to back strong starts where he has allowed 2 ER over 12.0 innings while striking out 7. The last time he faced the Mes was in 2013 where he logged 2.0 innings allowing only 3 hits and no runs. The Mets bats have had limited experience with Sullivan:

  • Cuddyer 4-11, 2B
  • Granderson 3-10, 3 HR
  • Murphy 0-1
  • Recker 1-1

Game Preview: Phillies @ Mets

The Mets finally put together a complete performance yesterday as they beat the Phillies 6-3, and they look to do it again tonight. Yesterday they received an average start from Bartolo Colon coupled with three homers from the offense, including a key go ahead three run shot from Wilmer Flores and relief pitching to close the door. Tonight Jacob deGrom will look to make sure the Mets end up in the win column against Jerome Williams.

Jacob is 5-4 on the season over 9 starts and 55.2 innings with a 2.75 ERA. In his last two starts he has tossed 14.0 innings allowing 6 hits, 1 earned run including 17 strikeouts. Most of the positive numbers are from his last start where he one hit the Cardinals over 8.0 innings and struck out 11 birds. In his first start against Philly this year he allowed 7 hits over 6.1 innings but no runs. The Phillies have the following numbers against deGrom:

  • Howard 2-9, HR
  • Revere 0-9
  • Utley 2-7
  • Ruiz 0-6
  • Sizemore 1-6
  • Galvis 2-2
  • Herrera 1-3

The Mets bats will get another look at Jerome Williams who is 3-4 over 9 starts and 48.0 innings this year with a 5.44 ERA. He is coming off of his second worst start of the season allowing 5 ER over 5.0 innings and in the month of May he has a 7.03 ERA allowing 19 earned runs in 24.1 innings. His second start of the season was against the Mets where he allowed 5 runs, 4 earned over 10 hits and 5.0 innings. It was by far his worst start in April. The Mets have the following numbers against Jerome:

  • Granderson 2-11, HR
  • Duda 2-6, HR
  • Lagares 2-6
  • Cuddyer 2-4, 2B
  • Campbell 1-3
  • Murphy 0-3
  • Tejada 1-2
  • Flores 0-2

Game Preview: Phillies vs Mets

The Mets need a win in the worst way today. Yesterday they lost 9-1 to the Pirates, so they were swept, in a 3 game set where they were outscored 21-4. It is also their 5th loss in the last 6 games and their 4th loss in the last 6 games that was a blowout. But, because of that early April streak, the Mets are still, barely, above .500 and are only 2.5 games back from the top, maybe the Phillies is just what the doctor ordered.

Bartolo Colon, one day removed from his 42nd birthday, will get the start tonight. On the season he is 6-3 over 9 starts and 55.2 innings with a 4.85 ERA. After an impressive start to the season, he has now tossed 4 poor games in his last 5 including three in a row where has allowed 4 ER over 6.0, 6 R and 5 ER over 5.0, and 9 R and 8 ER over 4.1. That first start, 4 ER, over 6, was against the Phillies. The Phillies have the following numbers against Colon:

  • Howard 3-17, 2 HR
  • Revere 7-18, 2B
  • Sizemore 3-14
  • Ruiz 5-15, 2B
  • Utley 5-14, 2 2B
  • Francoeur 1-5
  • Galvis 1-3

The Mets bats will draw Severino Gonzalez, making his 4th major league start. On the season he is 2-1 over 12.2 innings with a 7.11 ERA. He pitched twice in the rotation between late April and the first week of May and he was recently recalled to start on May 20th. In his last two starts he has allowed 3 ER over 10.0 innings, so his season numbers are junk only from his first start. In the minors this year he was 1-2 over 5 starts and 29.0 innings with a 4.34 ERA.
