Game Preview: Mets @ Nationals

Well it wasn’t the best of days for the Amazin’s yesterday. Matt Harvey allowed 5 runs (there is a disturbing trend developing in his pitching ability and extra rest) and the Mets bats couldn’t absorb 5 runs (because they can barely absorb 3 runs), so the Mets lost. But today Jacob deGrom takes the mound against Joe Ross and hopefully things will be different!

Jacob, the all-star, is 9-6 over 17 starts and 113.2 innings with a 2.14 ERA. In his last 10 starts before the All-Star break he logged 72.0 innings with 75 strikeouts and a 1.38 ERA. His last start before the break was an absolute gem where he allowed no runs over 8.0 innings while striking out 10. And of course, there was the All-Star game where he struck out 3 All-Stars on a total of 10 pitches. This year he is 0-2 over two starts against the Nationals and 11.1 innings with a 3.97 ERA. The Nationals have the following numbers against Jacob:

  • Harper 3-8, 2B
  • Desmond 2-8, HR
  • Escobar 2-5
  • Ramos 2-6, 2B
  • Uggla 1-4, 2B
  • Zimmermann 0-3

The Mets bats will draw rookie Joe Ross who is 2-1 over 3 starts in his major league career and 20.1 innings with a 2.66 ERA while striking out 23 batters. Also statistically, he’s been getting better each start, but this will be his first start since June 19th. His minor statistics are odd, because this year he has been used mostly as a reliever pitching in 12 games but only 5.1 innings with a 16.88 ERA but overall in the minors he has a 4.13 ERA over 74 games, 60 starts and 305.0 innings. He has never faced the Mets in the major league game.

Game Preview: Mets @ Nationals

Technically, the Mets won a game yesterday. A very quick recap of the game: Niese was great, the offense was not great at getting players from being on base to score. This went on for a while. The Mets scored in some inning way after 9, but then the Cardinals did too. Several innings later, the Mets did it again and this time it held!

Despite how clumsy the three games back from the All-Star feels, the Mets are heading into tonight into a very interesting position. They go into DC, to play the division leading Nationals and the Mets are only two games back. This could be a big week for the Mets! Lets see what happens!

Matt Harvey is 8-6 on the season over 17 games and 111.1 innings with a 3.07 ERA. In his last 5 starts he is 2-2 over 31.2 innings with a 1.71 ERA over 31.2 innings. Harvey has been tremendous against the Nationals this year going 2-0 in as many starts over 13.0 innings not allowing any runs and striking out 12. The Nationals have the following numbers against Harvey:

  • Desmond 4-14, 2B, HR
  • Harper 0-12
  • Uggla 2-7
  • Escobar 1-5
  • Ramos 3-6, 2B
  • Taylor 3-6, 2B
  • Robinson 0-3

Gio Gonzalez is 6-4 over 16 starts and 94.2 innings with a 3.99 ERA. In his last three starts he is 2-0 over 20.0 innings with a 0.90 ERA while striking out 15. His one start against the Mets was a good one where he held the Mets scoreless over 7.0 innings in a game the Nationals eventually won 1-0 (otherwise known as the story of the 2015 Mets) while striking out 9 Mets. The Amazin’s have the following numbers against Gio:

  • Granderson 3-24, 2B, HR
  • Mayberry 4-22, 2 HR
  • Cuddyer 6-16, 2B, HR
  • Murphy 7-20, 3B
  • Tejada 5-18
  • Duda 3-17, 2B
  • Lagares 8-19, 2 2B, 3B, HR

Game Preview: Mets @ Cardinals

The Mets will look to put all the pieces back together in their playing puzzle today as they play the Cardinals. On Friday night, after lead off homer by Grandy, the Mets bats couldn’t scratch anything out until the 9th inning, so 3 runs given up by Mets pitching became insurmountable. Last night Colon just exploded, which is similar to what he did vs the Cardinals earlier this season (although Terry says the long All-Star break could have played a roll) while the Mets lumber acted like twigs.

Jon Niese 5-8 over 17 starts and 104.2 innings with a 3.61 ERA this season. Since the start of June, however, he has tossed 7 games with a 2-3 record over 47.2 innings with a 2.64 ERA while striking out 33 batters against 16 walks. Like Colon yesterday, one of his worst starts of the season came against the Cardinals where he allowed 8 earned runs over 5.0 innings and 11 hits. The Cardinals have the following numbers against Niese:

  • Heyward 9-28, 2 2B, 2 HR
  • Molina 7-19, 2B, HR
  • Holliday 3-17, 2B
  • Reynolds 6-12, 2 HR
  • Bourjos 4-12
  • Peralta 5-11
  • Carpenter 4-7, 2 2B

The Mets bats will draw rookie Tim Cooney who is making his 5th major league start. On the season he has a 4.34 ERA over 4 games and 18.2 innings with 17 strikeouts. Since returning to the Majors in July, Cooney has logged 16.1 innings with a 3.31 ERA. In the minors this year the 24 year old is 6-4 over 14 games with a 2.74 ERA over 88.2 innings. This will be his first time facing the Mets.

Game Preview: Mets @ Cardinals

The Mets continue their series against the Cardinals tonight as Bartolo Colon makes his first start of the second half. Colon is 9-7 over 17 starts this season with 105.0 innings with a 4.46 ERA. He wrapped up the first half in a nice streak as he allowed 2 earned runs over 13.0 innings with 12 strikeouts. In his last 8 starts his ERA is about half a run better at 4.01, which includes two starts where he was just not getting it done. One of his worst starts of the season though was against the Cardinals where he allowed 9 runs, 8 earned over 4.1 innings and 11 hits. The Cardinals have the following numbers vs Bartolo:

  • Reynolds 6-17, 2 2B
  • Heyward 4-14, HR
  • Peralta 3-15, 2B
  • Molina 1-10
  • Carpenter 4-12, HR
  • Bourjos 2-6

The Mets bats will get a look at John Lackey who is 7-5 over 18 starts and 117.1 innings with a 2.99 ERA in a revival season. After a start against the Rockies on June 8th where Lackey allowed 10 runs, 8 earned over 4.0 innings, John has gone 3-1 over 6 starts tossing 42.2 innings with a 1.69 ERA. Lackey also tossed a gem against the Mets earlier this year where he allowed 1 ER over 7.0 innings with 6 strikeouts. The Mets have the following numbers against Lackey:

  • Granderson 9-37, 2 2B, 2 3B, HR
  • Cuddyer 8-28, 2B, 4 HR
  • Campbell 1-3
  • Duda 1-3
  • Flores 0-2
  • Lagares 0-2
  • Murphy 0-2
  • Plawecki 0-2

Game Preview: Mets @ Cardinals

And we’re back! After a four day break for the All-Star game the second place Mets are back in action tonight! The Mets are 47-42 heading into the second half of the season, two games back in the east and one game back in the wild card. They are coming off of a three game sweep of Arizona and they head into St. Louis to play the incredible 2015 Cardinals who have a winning percentage of .627 right now, and that includes them ending the first half of the season being swept.

The Mets will start things off with Noah Syndergaard who is 4-4 over 11 games and 66.2 innings with a 3.11 ERA. In his last three starts he has logged 22.0 innings, 3 ER, 1.23 ERA and 24 strikeouts. Noah has never faced the Cardinals or anyone on the Cardinals roster before in a major league game.

The Mets bats will see if they can start the second half of the season like how they started the first half (and not like how they performed for 75% of it) against Lance Lynn who is 6-5 with a 2.90 ERA over 16 starts and 96.1 innings. After a string of 6 starts where he went 3-0 and tossed 37.2 innings with a 1.19 ERA, he allowed 5 ER over 4.0 innings in his last start of the first half. Last year he was 0-2 against the Mets despite posting a 2.92 ERA in 12.1 innings over two games. The Mets have the following numbers against Lynn:

  • Murphy 6-14, 2 2B
  • Duda 0-10
  • Mayberry 3-8, 2B
  • Cuddyer 1-6
  • Tejada 1-5
  • Granderson 0-3

Game Preview: Diamondbacks vs Mets

As you already know by now, today was originally slated for Matz, but as he is sidelined for the next few weeks, at least in the immediate future it looks like the Mets go back to a 5-man rotation and hand the ball to Jon Niese today. Jon has received a lot of criticism over the last 6 weeks, from myself included, but he has turned it on as of late. Overall he is 4-8 over 16 starts and 98.0 innings with a 3.58 ERA. Since June 11th he has tossed 5 games and 35.0 innings with a 2.06 ERA. In a smaller sample, in his last two starts he has logged 15.0 innings with 1 ER. At the start of June he faced the Diamondbacks allowing 3 ER over 6.0 innings and a season high of 8 strikeouts. Arizona has the following numbers against Niese:

  • Castillo 2-10, HR
  • Goldschmidt 2-8
  • Hill 2-8, 2B, HR
  • Pollock 4-6, 2B
  • Salty 1-6

The Mets bats will get a crack at Rubby De La Rosa who is 6-4 over 17 starts and 106.2 innings with a 4.89 ERA. He is coming off of a rough start where he allowed 6 ER over 5.0 innings which ended a streak of 4 starts where he allowed 2 runs or less (and before that he had a streak of 4 starts where he allowed 4 runs or more). He has made only one career start against the Mets where he allowed 3 ER over 7.0 innings. The Mets have the following numbers against De La Rosa:

  • Cuddyer 0-3
  • Duda 0-3
  • Murphy 1-3, 2B
  • Tejada 2-3

Game Preview: Diamondbacks vs Mets

The Mets look to take the series this afternoon against the Diamondbacks as we celebrate the last Matt Harvey day of the first half of 2015. Yesterday Thor showed everyone what he can bring to the table pitching 8 innings, allowing only 1 run on 4 hits and striking out 13 batters. The Mets finally got some power from Duda and Cuddyer, something that has been sorely missed in the last month plus.

Matt Harvey is 7-6 over 16 games and 104.1 innings with a 3.11 ERA while striking out 100 batters. After three straight starts of dominance, totaling 19.2 innings and 2 runs, 1 earned, Harvey was human in his last start allowing 3 ER over 5.0 innings against the Dodgers. He faced the Diamondbacks earlier this year allowing 2 ER over 7.0 innings while striking out 9. Arizona has the following numbers against Matt:

  • Aaron Hill 3-8
  • Goldschmidt 1-5, HR
  • Ahmed 0-3
  • Castillo 0-3
  • Delgado 1-3
  • Owings 0-3

Arizona will second out Patrick Corbin to the mound today who will be making his second start of the season. In his debut last time out, he allowed 2 ER over 8 hits in 5.0 innings of work on his way to a win. It was first start since having Tommy John, which sidelined Corbin for the entire 2014 season. Back in 2013 he made 32 starts and logged 208.1 innings with a 3.41 ERA. Back then he faced the Mets twice allowing 7 ER over 12.0 innings. The Mets have the following numbers against Patrick:

  • Cuddyer 4-11, 2B
  • Lagares 1-6, 2B
  • Murphy 3-5
  • Flores 0-3
  • Mayberry 1-2, HR
  • Tejada 0-2

Game Preview: Diamondbacks vs Mets

It wouldn’t be the Mets if good news wasn’t immediately followed by bad news, right? The good news, after last weekend, expectations were incredibly low for the 6-game road trip against the Dodgers and the Giants but the Mets, despite scoring the minimum often, won 4-2. The bad news: Steve Matz may have pitched injured in his last start, the Mets probably knew this before the start and while they stress that its minor, he will be likely out for a couple to a few weeks, if not more. So the Mets could really use Noah Syndergaard tonight and the bats to help us forget about the news yesterday.

Noah Syndergaard is 3-4 over 10 games and 58.2 innings with a 3.38 ERA and 59 strikeouts. In his last two starts he has tossed 14.0 innings allowing only 2 ER and striking out 11 batters. In 3 of his 4 last starts he has allowed exactly 1 run. This will be Noah’s first start against the Diamondbacks.

The Mets bats will try to get it going against Chase Anderson who is 4-2 over 16 starts and 97.0 innings with a 3.71 ERA in his second major league season. His last start was his first in three starts where he tossed a quality starts (3 ER over 6 IP) in his last three starts in total he has logged 17.2 innings with a 7.64 ERA. Before these three starts his ERA was 2.84. Against the Mets earlier this year he allowed only 1 ER over 5.2 innings and 6 strikeouts. The Mets have the following numbers against Chase:

  • Cuddyer 2-9, 2B
  • Duda 0-3
  • Granderson 1-3
  • Lagares 2-3, HR
  • Tejada 1-2
  • Campbell 1-2

Game Preview: Mets @ Giants

The Mets and Giants play the rubber game this afternoon as the Mets look to take the series from the Giants. Last night Giants scored 3 runs over 6 innings against Colon and that was all they needed because the Mets scored nothing. Anyway the first time all-star Jacob deGrom takes the mound today and he can hit too so  maybe the Mets will score some runs today.

Jacob is 8-6 over 16 starts and 105.2 innings with a 2.30 ERA. In his last nine starts and 64.0 innings he is 5-2 with a 1.55 ERA. He missed the Giants earlier this year but last year he allowed 2 ER over 7.1 innings while striking out 7. The Giants have the following numbers against Jacob:

  • Belt 1-2
  • Crawford 0-3
  • Panik 0-3
  • Pence 0-3
  • Posey 0-3
  • Peavy 0-2

Peavy will be making his 4 start of the season today. So far he is 0-3 over 14.0 innings with a 6.43 ERA. This only his second start since coming back from injury, in his first start he allowed 3 runs over 6.1 innings against the Nationals. Last year he allowed 4 ER over 7.0 innings against Mets. The Amazin’s have the following numbers against Jake Peavy:

  • Granderson 4-20, 2 2B, HR
  • Cuddyer 4-13, 2 2B
  • Murphy 2-8, 2 2B
  • Duda 1-5, HR
  • Flores 1-3, 2B
  • Lagares 1-3

Game Preview: Mets @ Giants

The Mets try to win two in a row today! Yesterday the Mets got a great start from Niese who pitched 8.0 scoreless innings, but get this, I know its surprising, the Mets didn’t score anything. Thankfully, the Mets were able to string hits together and suppress base running miscues that haunted them earlier to scratch out 3 runs in the top of the 3rd and Familia shut the door from there. Bartolo Colon looks to keep the good times rolling today.

On the season Colon is 9-6 over 16 starts and 99.0 innings with a 4.55 ERA. After back to back poor starts where he allowed 10 ER over 10.1 innings of work, he tossed 7.0 shutout innings his last time out striking out 8 batters in a game the Mets eventually lost 2-0. He missed the Giants earlier this year but last year he was 0-1 over 2 games allowing 9 runs, 7 earned and 10.1 innings. The Giants have the following numbers against Colon:

  • Pagan 4-9, 2B
  • Posey 3-7, 2B
  • Crawford 4-7
  • Blanco 1-6
  • Maxwell 2-6
  • Belt 1-5, HR

Matt Cain is making his second start of the season today. In his first start he allowed 5 ER over 5.0 innings over 7 hits and 2 strikeouts. He sidelined to start the year with a strained flexor tendon. Last year he was 2-7 over 15 games and 90.1 innings with a 4.18 ERA. Last year he allowed 2 ER over 7.0 innings of work against the Mets. The Mets have the following numbers against Matt:

  • Murphy 4-16, 2B, HR
  • Tejada 5-13, HR
  • Duda 1-8, 3B
  • Cuddyer 2-6, 2B
  • Granderson 0-2
  • Lagares 1-3
