Game Preview: Mets @ Phillies

What a difference a weekend makes! The Mets swept the Rockies this weekend and went from losing 4 of their last 5 to winning 4 of their last 5 games as they head into Philadelphia. Yesterday the Mets received an excellent spot start from Logan Verrett who tossed 8.0 innings allowing only 1 ER. The Phillies the Mets are facing tonight are not the same Phillies from earlier this year. They’ve been playing well as of late. The Mets will also be getting a lift tonight as David Wright looks to rejoin the team.

Jacob deGrom gets the start for the Mets. He is 12-6 over 23 starts and 154.1 innings with a 1.98 ERA. In his last seven starts he is 4-0 over 48.2 innings, striking out 56 batters posting a 1.29 ERA. He has faced the Phillies twice this season tossing 13.2 innings with a 1.32 ERA and 12 K’s. The Phillies have the following numbers against deGrom:

  • Howard 2-12, HR, 4 K
  • Ruiz 1-9
  • Asche 3-5
  • Galvis 3-6
  • Herrera 1-6
  • Brown 0-2

The Mets draw rookie Adam Morgan for the season opener. He is 4-4 over 10 games and 57.1 innings with a 3.92 ERA. He has been putting it together of late posting a 2.84 ERA over his last 3 starts and 19.0 innings. This will be Morgan’s first appearance against the Mets but he has faced Uribe before who is 1-3 with a homer.

Highlight. Copy. Paste.

The Mets won their consecutive game against the Rockies last night by the identical score of 14-9 all the course there was a little different. This time, the Mets only hit one homer (Uribe), and 8 Mets players had multiple hits. The Mets leaped out to a 3-0 lead before the Rockies brought it back to 3-3. Then the Mets batted around without an out and jolted to a 11-3 lead.

Logan Verrett will be making his major league debut as a starter today in an attempt to stretch out Harvey and others to last deeper into the season. Between the Mets and Rangers this year he has pitched 11 games with a 2.82 ERA over 22.1 innings and with the Mets he has pitched 13.1 innings over 7 games with a 0.68 ERA. He is 4-2 with the 51’s this season over 16 games including 9 starts with a 3.57 ERA. The only Rockie he has faced in his limited major league career is Jose Reyes who is 0-1.

The Mets haven’t had the world’s best last 5 games. After being swept by the Pirates, they almost lost a game in Baltimore followed by the first loss against Baltimore in a while. At the same time, the Nationals were able to gain 1.5 games against the Mets. The Mets look to get everything back together tonight as they go out to Colorado after sweeping the Rockies earlier last week.

Bartolo Colon is 10-11 over 23 games and 141.1 innings with a 4.58 ERA while allowing a league leading 162 hits. After a hiccup against the Rays, he held the Pirates to 1 ER over 7.- innings. He missed the Rockies earlier this year but last year he had a start to forget as he allowed 7 ER over 4.2 innings. The Rockies have the following numbers against Colon:

  • Reyes 5-9

  • Duda 0-3

Game Preview: Mets @ Orioles

The game got a little a dicey at the end but the Mets were able to hold off the Orioles last night and snap their three game losing streak. Curtis Granderson got the Mets on the board immediately with a lead-off homer and then added a second homer later in the game while Jacob deGrom dominated in the Oriole lineup for 7.2 innings. The ninth inning was a bit of an adventure, but it doesn’t matter the Mets won the game and look to take the two game set tonight.

Noah Syndergaard is 7-6 over 17 games and 105.2 innings with a 3.07 ERA. Two starts ago was quite rough for Noah as he allowed 5 ER over 4.0 innings and rebounded nicely in his last start allowing 3 ER over 7.0 (d’Arnaud took some blame for the pitch sequence in the first inning that allowed multiple runs). He missed the Orioles this year and he hasn’t faced anyone on the Orioles roster yet in a major league game.

Ubaldo Jimenez is 9-7 over 23 starts and 131.0 innings while posting a 3.92 ERA. So far in August he has made one brilliant start against the Angels holding them scoreless for 8.0 innings sandwiched between two below-average starts. This has been the story of his season recently as he was having a terrific season up to the All-Star break. Earlier this year he faced the Mets allowing 3 ER over 6 hits and 4.0 innings. The Mets have the following numbers against Ubaldo:

  • K Johnson 8-34, 4 2B
  • Granderson 3-13, 3B, HR
  • Uribe 5-14, 2 2B
  • Cespedes 3-10, HR
  • Cuddyer 1-9
  • Murphy 1-8

Game Preview: Mets @ Orioles

This was an odd weekend for the Mets. In all three games, they had a legitimate chance to win except they fell apart late in one way or another. Luckily, the Nationals were also swept so we are still where we started. Meanwhile, the Mets draw an Orioles team that has gotten hot as of late and on their own turf, where they are a different team. For the Orioles, they have strong bullpen and incredibly strong lineup. Plus, they play in a fairly hitters friendly park (or at least their lineup makes it look hitter friendly). Also as a fun side note, the last time Cespedes was in Baltimore, he was traded to the Mets.

Jacob deGrom looks to put things back on track for the Mets. On the season he is 11-6 over 22 starts and 146.2 innings with a 2.03 ERA and 152 K’s. He is coming off of his strongest start in August where he held the Rockies scoreless over 7.0 innings while striking out 10. In his last 15 starts he is 8-2 over 105.0 innings with a 1.46 ERA. Earlier this year he faced the Orioles at Citi Field and held them to 1 run while striking out 9 over 7.0 innings. The Orioles have the following numbers against Jacob:

  • Parra 0-6
  • Paredes 1-4
  • Davis 0-3
  • Jones 0-2
  • Machado 2-3

The Mets bats draw Gausman who is 2-4 over 16 games, 8 starts and 60.1 innings with a 4.48 ERA. When Gausman is on, he’s great. Since becoming a full time starter on June 20th, he has two outings where he has completely shut down his opponents. He also has two starts where he has self-destructed on the mound. In August he is 1-2 over 19.2 innings in three starts with a 5.03 ERA. He made a relief outing against the Mets in Early May where he held the Mets scoreless over 1.0 innings and struck out 2. The Mets have the following limited numbers against Gausman:

  • Cespedes 3-9, HR
  • K Johnson 0-5
  • Granderson 0-1
  • Cuddyer 0-1
  • Duda 0-1
  • Lagares 0-1

Game Preview: Pirates vs Mets

For a second straight day, the Mets dropped a game in extras, but the Nationals, lost, so we get to do it all again today. Yesterday the Mets got a solid start from Niese and then 7 innings of nearly perfect work from the bullpen until Gilmartin ran out of gas+ defensive mistakes allowed 2 runs in the top of the 14th. However, today is Harvey day and we still have a 4.5 game lead in the east. Let’s get it done!

Harvey is 11-7 over 22 starts and 148.0 innings with a 2.61 ERA. Harvey has tossed back to back shutout starts going 7 and 8 innings. Overall since the All-Star break he has pitched 36.2 innings over 5 games with a 1.23 ERA over 26 K’s. One of his worst starts this season was against the Pirates where he allowed 7 ER over 4.0 innings. The Pirates have the following numbers against Matt:

  • Marte 0-5
  • Alvarez 3-5, 2 2B, HR
  • McCutchen 2-4, HR
  • Morse 0-3
  • Stewart 0-3
  • Walker 0-3

The Mets bats will get a look at Jeff Locke who is 6-7 over 22 starts with a 4.43 ERA over 124.0 innings. In his last four starts he has tossed 20.2 innings with a 6.53 ERA. Locke last faced the Mets back in 2013 where tossed 6.0 innings allowing only 1 ER. The Mets have the following numbers against Jeff:

  • Uribe 0-7
  • Murphy 2-6
  • Tejada 3-6
  • Cespedes 0-2
  • Duda 0-2
  • Lagares 1-2
  • Recker 1-2, HR

Game Preview: Pirates vs Mets

The Mets lost a tough one last night, but so did the Nationals, so we start today just where we started yesterday with the Mets having a 4.5 game lead in the East. J.A. Happ provided a strong start for the Pirates and although the Mets were able to push it to extras, Parnell struggled in the top of the 10th, and the Mets little comeback in the bottom of the 10th wasn’t enough.

Jon Niese looks to put the Mets back on the right track tonight. On the season he is 7-9 over 22 starts and 135.1 innings with a 3.46 ERA. In his last three starts he has pitched 20.0 innings with a 1.80 ERA while striking out 17. His start against the Pirates earlier this year was a forgettable one as it came in the midst of that stretch of really ugly starts for Jon. He allowed 4 ER over 4.2 innings. The Pirates have the following numbers against Jon:

  • Ramirez 6-21, 2B, 2 HR
  • Morse 4-22, 3 2B
  • McCutchen 7-15, 3 2B, HR
  • Walker 2-10
  • Marte 2-10
  • Stewart 1-5

The Mets bats draw Charlie Morton who is 7-4 over 14 starts and 82.1 innings with a 4.48 ERA. Morton is coming off a rough start where he allowed 5 ER over 5.0 innings agianst hte Dodgers and only has one good start (7.0 shutout innings) in his last 5 games, all the games he has pitched since the All-Star break. In that stretch he has tossed 30.1 innings but with a 5.04 ERA. He missed the Mets earlier this year but last year he picked up the loss after pitching 5.1 innings allowing 3 runs, 2 earned. The Mets have the following numbers against him:

  • Murphy 3-16
  • Uribe 3-13
  • Duda 3-8, 2B
  • Tejada 4-7
  • K Johnson 2-8, 2B
  • Cuddyer 1-3
  • Granderson 0-3
  • Cespedes 1-2, 2B

Game Preview: Pirates vs Mets

The Mets head into a tough series with the Pirates with a 4.5 game lead in the division at Citi Field tonight. The Pirates swept the Mets earlier this season in June during that rough patch the Mets were having but this squad comes in just narrowing escaping a sweep from the Cardinals. The Mets on the other hand demolished the Rockies in a four game sweep and are now 11 games over .500 for the first time since late June 2010.

Bartolo Colon is 10-11 over 22 starts and 134.1 innings with a 4.76 ERA and a major league leading 157 hits allowed. He’s in the middle of this stretch of good start / bad start and last time out he allowed 4 ER over 6.2 innings, so maybe he’s due for one of his good starts. Two of his last four starts he has allowed 1 ER over 8.0 innings. He missed the Pirates back in June but he did toss 13.1 innings against them last year with a 1-1 record and a 3.38 ERA. The Pirates have the following numbers against Colon:

  • Stewart 5-14, HR
  • Morse 2-14
  • Ramirez 5-12, 2 2B, HR
  • Marte 1-10
  • Alvarez 4-9, 2 2B
  • McCutchen 3-8
  • Walker 2-7, 2B

The Mets will get a look at an old foe in J.A. Happ, making a start on 9 days rest. In his first Pirates start he allowed 4 ER over 8 hits and 4.1 innings. With the Mariners this year he had a 4.64 ERA over 21 games, 20 starts and 108.2 innings of work. July was a month he would like to put behind him as he allowed 20 runs, 19 earned in just 23.0 innings of work. He last faced the Mets in 2012 where he allowed 3 ER over 6.1 innings of work. The Mets have the following numbers on Happ:

  • Cespedes 3-19, 2B
  • Granderson 3-11, 2B, HR
  • K Johnson 2-10, 2 HR
  • Murphy 2-7, 2B, HR
  • Tejada 0-3
  • Uribe 3-3, HR
  • Duda 0-1

Game Preview: Rockies vs Mets

The Mets try to complete the always difficult 4-game sweep this afternoon as the Rockies play their last game in Queens for the season. For the second straight game yesterday, the Mets shut-out the Rockies, this time by the score of 3-0 in a game that saw a dominant outing from deGrom, strong relief from both Clippard and Familia, and the first homer from Cespedes. The Mets are now 10 games above .500 and thanks to the Dodgers, now 3.5 in front of the Nationals.

Noah Syndergaard is 6-6 over 16 starts and 98.2 innings with 106 K’s this season. He’s coming off of his first terrible start in a while where he allowed 5 ER over 4.0 innings while striking out 6. Even including that start, in his last 8 starts he has tossed 54.0 innings with a 2.17 ERA. Syndergaard has never faced the Rockies before, but he has faced Jose Reyes who is 0-3 with 2 K’s.

Eddie Butler will get the start for the Rockies. He is 3-9 over 15 starts and 75.1 innings with a 5.50 ERA and 40 K’s. Since being recalled on July 24th, he has made 4 starts with an 0-3 record over 21.0 innings and a 7.29 ERA. This will be Butler’s first start against the Mets, but he has faced Juan Uribe before, who is 0-2.
