The Mets will try to split the season series with the Yankees tonight as they play game 4 in the Bronx. Last night the Mets hit into multiple double plays early on in the game ending rallies early while the Yankees piled on the runs early. In the end the end, it was just too much for the Mets to overcome and they ended up losing 9-5.

Bartolo Colon will try to put them back on the right track. He’s 9-6 over 22 games and 21 starts pitching 120.2 innings with a 3.58 ERA. He’s coming off of a rough start against the Rockies where he allowed 5 ER over 5.0 innings and in his last five starts he’s alternated between being terrible and fantastic, the pendulum is supposed to swing to fantastic tonight. The Mets offense finally came together last night as they beat the Yankees 7-1. Bruce went 0-4 in his debut last night but the players around him came through as De Aza and d’Arnaud both hit homers and multiple Mets had key hits with runners on to make the game unattainable for the Yankees. Last night even featured the return of Jon Niese! Tonight the game will shift to the Bronx as Steven Matz takes on Chad Green.

Steven Matz is 8-7 over 19 starts and 113.0 innings with a 3.35 ERA. In his last start he allowed 2 ER over 6.0 innings while striking out 5. He didn’t have his best stuff and labored through his 6.0 innings allowing 10 hits, but he allowed only 2 runs and put the Mets in a good position at the end of the day (the bats didn’t come through though). In his last two starts he has totaled 2 ER in 12.0 innings. He faced the Yankees towards the end of last year were he allowed 1 ER over 6.0 innings. The Mets bats draw Chad Green who is 1-2 over 7 starts and 3 starts this year with a 4.56 ERA over 23.2 innings in his rookie season. Green is returning to the rotation after the sell-off the Yankees went through at the deadline. He started July off with a strong start, 1 run, 0 earned, over 6.0 innings but followed that up allowing 7 ER over 4.1 innings. Since the All-Star break he’s been in the pen pitching 8.1 innings over three games allowing no runs. Not surprisingly, he has never faced the Mets or anyone on the Mets roster.

Last night was a good example of “You can never get enough runs”. After going up early 1-0, the Mets found themselves down 3-1 and then 3-2. Reynolds hit a 3 run homer in an inning where the Mets sent 9 batters to the plate to make it 5-3, but the Mets left the bases loaded in that inning. The bullpen later faltered and the Mets, who were playing several men down eventually lost in extra innings.

Jacob deGrom looks to turn things around for the Mets tonight. He is 6-5 over 18 starts and 112.1 innings with a 2.56 ERA. His last start was great as he held the Rockies scoreless over 7.0 innings in a game the Mets eventually loss, it was a good bounce back start for Jacob as in his previous starte he allowed 5 ER over 3.2 innings. Jacob’s first, and on of his few, rough starts last year was against the Yankees in the Bronx as he allowed 6 ER over 5.0 innings. The Yankees have the following numbers against him:

The Mets really needed the win yesterday in a bad way. For a while, yesterday’s game felt like an extension of the entire weekend: a long, drawn out game where the Mets were slowly letting it slip away. When the Rockies took the lead, the Mets offense was no where to be found. But Walker mustered some magic and slammed a 3 run homer. Everything clicked. The Mets had the lead and the started to pitch like it (thank you Reed and Familia!). Tonight the Mets are hoping to get it done against the Yankees.

Logan Verrett gets the nod for the Mets today. He’s 3-6 over 9 starts and 27 games with 74.1 innings with a 4.12 ERA. In his last three starts he has tossed 18.1 innings with a 3.44 ERA, so he’s getting better. This will be his first start against the Yankees and the only player on their roster who has faced Logan is Starlin Castro who is 0-1.

The Mets bats will get a crack at CC Sabathia today who is 6-8 over 107.0 innings over 18 starts with a 3.95 ERA for his best season since 2012. The end of June to late July was rough for CC as he posted a 7.46 ERA over 35.0 innings in 6 starts (31 earned runs). His last start was more positive as he allowed 2 ER over 6.2 innings. Sabathia had two very different starts against the Mets last year. In April he allowed 7 ER over 5.0 innings and in September he allowed only 1 ER over 6.0 innings. The Mets try to avoid the four game sweep and their fifth loss in a row this afternoon as they take on the Rockies. It’s been a struggle of late for the Amazin’s who have scored only 40 runs since the All-Star break, a major league low. Last night, Colon got roughed up towards the end of this outing after a series of defensive miscues from a non-optimal defensive lineup for the Mets. The Rox were able to pull away in the later innnings while the Mets seemed to be searching the forest to find lumber to hit a ball with.

Syndergaard starts for the Mets today and he is 9-5 over 20 games and 19 starts this year pitching 117.1 innings with a 2.45 ERA. In the month of July he has pitched 4 times totaling 23.1 innings with a 2.31 ERA while striking out 29 batters. Last year he held the Rockies to 3 ER over 7.0 innings of work. The Mets lost another tough one last night. Steven Matz didn’t have his best stuff, but he was able to hold the Rockies to 2 runs despite giving up what felt like two dozen hits. It didn’t really matter though as the Mets offense was again no where to be found. Outside of a solo shot by James Loney, the Mets would get people out on base and just leave them there. Then, the Rockies finished the game with a 3 run shot dagger that put any hope to bed for the Mets. Tonight, on Mike Piazza number retirement day, the Mets look to Bartolo Colon to help keep the ship afloat.

Bartolo Colon is 9-5 over 21 games, 20 starts and 115.2 innings with a 3.35 ERA. He is coming off a strong start against the Cardinals where he held them to 1 ER over 7.0 innings while striking out 8. Last year one of his worst starts of the year came against the Rockies as he allowed 7 ER off 3 homers in 3.2 innings of work. The Rockies have the following numbers against Colon:

The Mets are coming off back to back disappointing losses as the offense struggles to get the gear back into the position. But things can change fast. A year ago today is when the Flores trade fell through. So tomorrow will be a year ago to day of one of the worst losses in the 2015 season. After that things changed quickly, so lets hope y’all!

Steven Matz takes the mound tonight. He’s 8-6 over 18 starts and 107.0 innings with a 3.36 ERA. His last time out he picked up his first win since May 25th as he tossed 6.0 scoreless innings against the Marlins in a game the Mets won 3-0. Matz missed the Rockies the first time around this year and didn’t face them last year so tonight will be his first time. No one on the Rockies roster faced Steven as a member of a different team.

The Mets will get a look at Tyler Chatwood tonight who has tossed 103.2 innings over 18 starts with a 9-6 record and a 3.65 ERA. After back to back starts in July where he allowed 11 ER over 8.0 innings, in his last start he allowed only one hit and no runs against the Braves in 5.0 innings (but walked 8 batters). In May he allowed 3 ER against the Mets over 7.0 innings. The Mets have the following numbers against Chatwood:

Last night was a tough one for the Mets. The Mets were behind most of the game, unable to cash-in on multiple chances with runners in scoring position until the 7th where the Mets scored one run on a wild pitch and then Cespedes hit a go-ahead homer. It wasn’t enough though as Familia’s save streak finally came to an end. The Mets try to pick it up today as the Mets start a four game set with the Rockies, which opens up with a day game for some reason.

Jacob deGrom is 6-5 over 17 starts this season pitching 105.2 innings with a 2.73 ERA. After his best start of the season on the 17th where he held the Phillies to one hit, he allowed 10 hits and 5 ER over 3.2 innings to the Marlins on the 23rd. His one start against the Rockies last year was strong as he allowed no runs and two hits over 7.0 innings and in his one start this year he allowed 3 ER over 6.1 innings in a loss. The Mets draw rookie Tyler Anderson in the opener today who is making the 9th start of his career. In his first 8 starts he has tossed 48.0 innings with a 3.56 ERA while posting a 3-3 record. The month of July has been tougher for Tyler. In July he’s tossed 24.1 innings with a 3-1 record but a 4.44 ERA. Anderson has never faced the Mets or anyone on the Mets roster.

The Mets split the double-header yesterday with the Cardinals and look to take the series today behind Logan Verrett. Logan Verrett is 3-6 over 26 games and 8 starts over 67.1 innings with a 4.14 ERA. After a series of rocky starts his last two have been solid totaling 11.1 innings with a 3.18 ERA while striking out 7 batters. This will be Verrett’s first start against the Cardinals and the only person on their whole roster who has faced Logan is Mike Leake, who is 0-1.

The Mets bats will get to see an old foe, cemented into the history books of critical Mets moments, Adam Wainwright. This year he’s 9-5 over 20 starts and 125.1 innings with a 4.09 ERA, which statistically is his worst season in his career (not including his injury seasons). He has turned it around in July pitching in four games with a 3-0 record and 29.0 innings with 27 strikeouts. During that time he has posted a sparkling 0.93 ERA. The last time he faced the Mets was back in 2014 where he held the Mets to 4 hits and no runs over 7.0 innings of work. The Mets have the following numbers against Adam Wainwright:

The first game features the same set up as yesterday, so forgive me as I just copy and paste yesterday’s preview:

Noah Syndergaard will start the series off for the Mets. In 19 games and 18 starts this year he is 9-4 over 111.1 innings with a 2.43 ERA with 136 K’s. His last start, his first since the All Star break, was solid as he allowed 1 run, no earned over 5.2 innings while striking out 8. He faced the Cardinals once last year allowed 2 earned runs over 7.0 innings while striking out 6 in a game the Mets eventually lost. The Cards have the following numbers against Thor:

The Mets draw Carlos Martinez tonight who is currently putting up better numbers than his All-Star year last year. He is 9-6 over 18 games and 114.1 innings of work with a 2.83 ERA. In his last 7 starts he is 3-1 (the team is 3-4) with a 1.52 ERA over 47.1 innings. He was quite good against the Mets last year allowing 2 runs, 1 earned over 10.1 innings of work while striking out 7. The Mets have the following numbers against Carlos:

After a strong outing coming back from the All-Star Break, Colon just didn’t have it in Chicago on the 20th where he allowed 6 ER over 4.1 innings against the Cubs.
