Game Preview: Mets @ Nationals

The Mets have a difficult road to the playoffs but took the right step yesterday with a win in the series opener. Yesterday the Mets offense clicked and the Mets relatively quickly built up a 7-0 lead before some 9th inning shenanigans brought the score down to 7-3. Every game matters for the Mets and as long as they keep winning, eventually things will break their way.

For the third time this season Jacob deGrom will take the mound against Max Scherzer. Jacob is 8-8 over 27 starts and 169.0 innings with a 2.66 ERA, 2.78 FIP, 1.024 WHIP and 154 ERA+. His last outing was a bit rough, allowing 4 runs over 7.0 innings, which was an identical amount of earned runs as his last four starts combined. This will be his 4th start against the Nationals this season totaling 17.0 innings allowing 4 runs, 1 earned from 11 hits and 5 walks while striking out 25. That’s a 0.53 ERA. The Mets bats will try to carry their energy over from yesterday into today against Scherzer. Max is 9-5 over 22 starts and 142.2 innings with a 2.46 ERA, 2.22 FIP (league leading), 1.061 WHIP and 188 ERA+. He has made two starts since coming back off the IL totaling a combined 8.1 innings allowing 3 runs off 10 hits and 2 walks while striking out 11. This will be his 4ths tart against the Mets this year and so far he has allowed 6 runs off 14 hits and 5 walks in 20.0 innings of work (2.70 ERA). The Mets have the following numbers against Max:
